To hope this racist woman loses her job

twitter.com/melodyMcooper/status/1264965252866641920?s=19. Was appalled to see this video on Twitter - a guy in Central park, NYC, who was birdwatching, politely asked a woman to put her dog on the lead as per the regulation in that part of the park. He started filming it as she got abusive and called the cops, to say that she (white) and her dog were being threatened by an African-American man and could they send the police (as we know this can often result in a shooting). All the while she was holding her dog up by dangling it from its collar, half strangling it. The man left and his sister put the video on Twitter, resulting in the racist dog strangler being identified very quickly... she has a high powered job with an insurance company. The animal shelter took back the dog, and her company says she is on 'administrative leave' hopefully meaning she will get fired. I was really shocked and dismayed that such open racism is still going on, even though she was being filmed! Surely she must lose her job at least, what company would want to be linked to something like this?

She does not come over well in this but I absolutely hate trial by social media. She sounds frightened and she reacted badly. He sounds annoyed and acted badly. We don't know exactly what happened before but I certainly wouldn't want to be in her shoes now.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 26/05/2020 13:04

It's a quote from the man's Facebook post @SharonasCorona m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10158742130625229&id=671885228&_rdr

It sounds from what he has written that he meant he would try to get the dog out of the area by throwing treats, but the words "Look, if you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want, but you’re not going to like it." are a bit vague and could be perceived as threatening.

Obviously not excusing what she did though, but it does sound a bit threatening (but she started it and does seem to be trying to weaponise his race).

SickOfLockdown · 26/05/2020 13:06

I have actually just watched that video properly and what the hell is she doing to that dog. Why grab the collar? Just use the lead. She’s strangling it, I’m glad they took that dog off her

yomommasmomma · 26/05/2020 13:07

Yet again I am staggered by responses to this thread. Does being behind a computer screen being out the closest racists.....clearly it does. I am saddened by mumsnet allowing the overt racist to pervade the site.

totallyyesno · 26/05/2020 13:08

@yomommasmomma
What are you talking about? I haven't seen any racist comments.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 13:09

She deserves all she gets.

Everything. Job losses, social media shame - the whole 9 yards. I think she should actually be tried for attempted murder.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 13:10

@PanicOnTheStreets85 thanks for the link, I’ll have a read.

Sceptre86 · 26/05/2020 13:10

She was racist and completely lied inorder to get him into trouble with the police. Incidents like this get black people killed especially in America where police are all too often trigger happy. Damn right she deserved to be filmed, named and shamed. The man in question did nothing to provoke her. All those making excuses for her are racist too. Sometimes mumsnet is really appalling.

She may lose her job she may not but he could have been killed if the police had turned up and believed her. She is an evil bitch.

totallyyesno · 26/05/2020 13:11

I think she should actually be tried for attempted murder.

Either you're joking or you have completely lost your grip on reality. And is nobody going to mention that the man's sister also managed to be a bit racist when tweeting about this? Nobody really comes out of this well.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2020 13:11

He absolutely needed to continue to film her for his own protection.

dreamingbohemian · 26/05/2020 13:11

It's not over-dramatic to worry what the police might do even if you are not armed or threatening.

Eric Garner was choked to death by a police officer while being arrested for selling cigarettes illegally.
Walter Scott was shot in the back running away from the police after being stopped for a traffic violation.
Philando Castile was shot dead in front of his girlfriend and daughter during a traffic stop.

These are well-known cases in the US. You do not have to be armed or doing anything violent to still be shot by the police.

Greensidepark · 26/05/2020 13:12

Some people here are will twist themselves into shape just to not acknowledge racism. Watch the video.

  • She was not scared of him. She was walking up to him and he is asking her to keep away.
  • She threatened him with calling the police to say she is being threatened by an ‘African American man’. Words she knows carries a lot of significance
  • She carried out that threat and embellished it with her distressed cry
  • the police did respond to her distressed cry. Without that video, how would they have treated the situation. His description of the situation or the narrative from a white woman who called them in distress.
  • and without releasing the video, would she have been reprimanded or would she get away with it and continue to use that threat to intimidate people in the future. Cos she got away with it. Maybe it is what she has done in the past.
  • but please justify it if you want to.

MN racism apologists are one of the reasons I'd never pay a subscription to be on MN. MN are fairly good at dealing with more extreme commentary. But aside from that yes there's so much overt racism it would gall me to even pay 5p. This board is becoming well known now for racism, Ive seen it discussed elsewhere.

ILoveYou3000 · 26/05/2020 13:14

Did we watch entirely different videos? She sounds combative and threatening; he sounds calm and polite. How did he act badly? By politely asking her to follow the rules?

Myohmy111 · 26/05/2020 13:15

I think she should actually be tried for attempted murder.

Come on. Now even I think that is a ridiculous suggestion.

Redcrayons · 26/05/2020 13:15

I don't think it was racist - she was being threatened by an african american man. Filming someone is very intimidating and threatening and he just so happened to be african american. Maybe the reference to his race was unnecessary but I don't think it was done with racist intent

Are you really that naive?

She knows what happens to black people when the police are involved. At best he’s arrested for threatening her, at worst they shoot him.

Myohmy111 · 26/05/2020 13:16

This thread is a perfect example of the blindspot that feminism has in relation to racism.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 26/05/2020 13:17

Just to be clear, I think she's an arse but does seem frightened as she (wrongly) perceived a threat. I don't think she's faking the tears. She seems so upset that she doesn't even seem to be able to concentrate on controlling her dog and half-chokes it. The fact that she said (before the video started) that it's too dangerous to let her dog off the lead elsewhere seems to suggest she's a bit neurotic.

No excuse for the implicit "I'll call the police and maybe they'll shoot you" though.

TeaAndHobnob · 26/05/2020 13:17

I'm shocked by the racism on this thread. Actually no, I'm not shocked, but I am sad.

The twisting some of you have done to try and excuse the actions of the woman in the video, or to try and somehow equate filming a person with trying to get someone falsely arrested and mistreated by the police is astonishing.

I'm really glad that man was filming this encounter. Some of you really need to think about the kind of person that you are.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 13:17

I predict that when black men are accused of being threatening in future and deny it, they will be asked why they didn’t record it if they did nothing wrong. We are in danger of only believing black people with video proof.

yomommasmomma · 26/05/2020 13:18

The first couple of posts on the thread demonstrate what I am talking about. Posters immediately excusing this women because she is white.

Mumsnet needs to address the vile undercurrent of racism and transphobia that sadly exist on this site.

I love mumsnet but some of the posters here are starting to use it as an outlet for their racist views.

To hope this racist woman loses her job
pinkstar01 · 26/05/2020 13:18

Not surprised by the comments defending her at all. The majority of MN users are white middle aged women who can't understand anything beyond their own little fish bowl thinking.
People have discovered an Instagram account run by her for her dog and she has posted many times about the dog being injured during altercations or from being off leash. Some twitter users even suggested she has munchausen by proxy!

Ponoka7 · 26/05/2020 13:18

@VladmirsPoutine, so you could be dropped anywhere in the UK and at anytime, day or night and you think the most dangerous threat is white women? I'd then extend that to the world.

"" Look, if you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want, but you’re not going to like it""

If you were alone with a man, you wouldn't find that threatening?

His Sister on that twitter linkused the 'karen' thing, so they aren't against using racist and ageist terms.

We don't know what's it like to live in a society where people carry guns and how scary that can be. I think she tried to use his race to get rid of him. There were racist undertones, but there could be a level of the crime statistics influencing that.

totallyyesno · 26/05/2020 13:18

@Myohmy111 Just because people disagree with you doesn't mean they have a blind spot.
@ILoveYou3000 I think she sounds scared. The very fact that we have interpreted this totally differently underlines the dangers of trial by social media and makes me think that those baying for blood should really take it down a notch.
