To be surprised to see a beach brawl in Kent?

Just seem it on the DM online ( I know I know) - I'm just surprised during these times of social distancing etc that this happened.
I've lived in Kent and can confirm we are all respectable, RP speaking, home counties residing respectable pillars of the community...

I grew up in Whitstable and went to school in Canterbury, I left 20 years ago however before Whitstable poshed up...it was a quiet fishing harbour back then.

Margate was chavvy, Ramsgate not too bad, Medway towns were rough, Faversham was quiet

HairyFloppins · 26/05/2020 22:09

I'm not really surprised. I grew up in Thanet and lived not far from this beach. Moved 15 years ago to the Midlands. I'm always hearing about anti-social behaviour from family. There was always fights in Broadstairs at the weekend when we used to go out.

It's a shame really. Such a beautiful area.

bulletjournalbilly · 26/05/2020 22:13

@I'm just surprised during these times of social distancing etc that this happened.

Do you think people who brawl will now say "oh hang on can I hit you hit with 2m social distancing please?"

TheClitterati · 26/05/2020 22:16

I moved to The Kent coast a couple of years ago and we adore it here. Clean, beautiful beaches, gorgeous countryside and really nice people. It's just got everything.

Plus we've spent the last two days at the beach getting a tan and swimming in the sea - absolutely bloody lovely

@wonkytonkwoman
@IndecentFeminist

I grew up in Whitstable and went to Secondary School in Canterbury but left the area 30 years ago. I didn't return for 20 years but now I go back annually to see family / old friends but find it busy, often dirty and mobbed with visitors. Canterbury seems to have lost any independent shops and Whitstable is marketed entirely for DFL's. But my 'home town' now is Edinburgh, and that is overrun with tourists year round!

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 26/05/2020 22:20

@springlike I've found this thread really upsetting. I live within the Thanet area although not from here originally and feel quite protective of it. It has its good and bad points like anywhere else. Some of the things that have been said here are really nasty.

I've barely been able to leave my house this past few weeks because of how heaving everywhere is and it's virtually impossible to go out without rubbing up against people. There has been a constant stream of people coming from the train stations and cars parked everywhere. The people involved in that fight could have come from anywhere.

TheClitterati · 26/05/2020 22:22

I like to drive up to Whitstable a couple of times a year to treat myself to a dozen 🦪 oysters.

longwayoff · 26/05/2020 22:22

Destroyed, my children used to call them Felthams. As in 'let's keep walking, Felthams over there' I suppose every area has it's, er, contrasts.

OldLace · 26/05/2020 22:34

Yes, the people in the fight could certainly have been visitors, not locals.

I still really like visiting, I just find it so busy now and agree that Whitstable, which was a sleepy fishing town when I lived there has definitely become more commercialised. I really miss the weather and the more relaxed vibe and the proximity of London though

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 26/05/2020 22:57

I must say though that Kent holds such happy memories for me;

  1. Had the best all day drinking session ever in Deal, there was magic in the air that day, I will never forget it
  1. My DH proposed to me in Whitstable whilst dropping sugar from a doughnut on our baby’s head.

I even miss the A2.

TheClitterati · 27/05/2020 10:47
  1. Paul Hollywood lives in Kent Grin
Destroyedpeople · 27/05/2020 10:57

@thepluckofthecoward..

You just completely misquoted me. I did not say 'horrible' you did. The word I used was 'strong'.
So you changed the words to some thing way worse and then started going 'wow' in faux shock.
Have you thought about getting a job in government?

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 27/05/2020 13:33

You’ve changed the game now @TheClitterati Grin

GinDaddyRedux · 27/05/2020 17:01

Kent has so many beautiful parts. But there are so many wannabes there that it leaves the county's reputation wide open for this kind of ribbing that its getting on this thread.

So many wannabes keen to tell us about their "naice" areas with money etc. Always the money,

Now I'm from Surrey where things are a bit more...factual in that sense. I'm not saying Surrey is desirable. There'll be dozens of Mumsnetters who'll come along and say how boring it is ,how there's nothing there, etc...but lots of parts of it are desirable. It is how it is.

GinDaddyRedux · 27/05/2020 17:02

Meant to say *lots of parts of it are in demand, not desirable.

bogfi · 27/05/2020 19:07

So many wannabes keen to tell us about their "naice" areas with money etc. Always the money,

Are you talking about Kent or Surrey? 🤔

GinDaddyRedux · 27/05/2020 19:28

@bogfi

I already said that people have their views on Surrey and moneyed obsessives etc. It's just that in Surrey, its more...factual. The stats are there. The net worth is there.

dontgobaconmyheart · 27/05/2020 19:38

Eh? I've lived in Kent OP and my god does it have a lot of poverty for every naice little town it has nearer Sussex or around Canterbury. I'd expect to see a brawl in most of the east kent towns on a weekend. Proper ropey in parts, and full of career crime.

bogfi · 27/05/2020 19:54

@GinDaddyRedux The people I know who are obsessed with house prices, keeping up with the Jones, etc live in Surrey. They are worse then my neighbours in Wandsworth!

CherryPavlova · 27/05/2020 20:02

Well Thanet was Farages homelands. It’s got some pretty rough areas. Margate was always marred by fighting groups.

OneOfTheGrundys · 27/05/2020 20:34

Kent’s about twice as big as Surrey though. Stands to reason there’ll be some crap bits.
There’s just a huge amount of variation though. We live in the east but grew up in the west and the heavy money round Sevenoaks is unbelievable. It’s dripping with wealth round there now in a way it didn’t so much 20/30 years ago. TWells was pretty normal if a little stuffy. And with rougher parts like any large town. And now, south TW is also busting with cash.
Kent’s just hugely variable and it takes a lot of London overflow. The money goes west and everyone else goes east.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/05/2020 20:39

Yabu I didn’t know Kent had beaches

If i was that fucking thick I'm not sure id be keen to advertise it that openly Hmm

StirlingWork · 27/05/2020 20:46

Without looking, what is the name of the mining town in Kent? It's in South Kent and I've forgotten the name of it without looking it up - Daymnnn!!!

Standrewsschool · 27/05/2020 20:48

Any other Kentishmaids or Maidsof Kent fed up with this Kent bashing thread.

Like all places, there are nice and nasty places, and nice and nasty people. Kent is not alone in that.

Plus we don’t know if the brawl was started by out-of -Towners or not.

CherryPavlova · 27/05/2020 20:50

There were four collieries. Bettshanger, Snowden, Chislet and All North East of Deal.
