Just seem it on the DM online ( I know I know) - I'm just surprised during these times of social distancing etc that this happened.
I've lived in Kent and can confirm we are all respectable, RP speaking, home counties residing respectable pillars of the community...

I agree there are some really grotty places in Kent but there are some gorgeous places too. I love Tenterden. I'm going to go against the grain here and say I love Kent (and I'm an Essex/Geordie girl!)

Kit19 · 26/05/2020 17:21

was it on the isle of sheppey? Leysdown?

grew up in Kent but moved away a long time ago

Standrewsschool · 26/05/2020 17:25

I love Kent also. There’s some really beautiful areas in Kent, and a real mixture of landscapes.

BarkandCheese · 26/05/2020 17:40

I’ve lived in Kent all my life, everywhere from Ramsgate to Tunbridge Wells. Some bits are rough AF, some bits are weird in a Royston Vaisy way (hello Romney Marshes) some are full of red trouser wearing hooray henries (hello Sevenoaks) it’s a weird county. Not quite London, not quite Essex, farm land, fruit growing and ex mining communities (most people don’t associate Kent with mines though), industrial seaports and pretty old fishing villages. It’s my home and I’m very found of it but it’s not really one of the stand out beautiful or interesting English counties.

Yankathebear · 26/05/2020 17:42

Yabu I didn’t know Kent had beaches.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 26/05/2020 17:44

Er... have you ever looked at Kent’s location on a map? Or travelled to the continent through Dover? It has a rather large shoreline.

BarkandCheese · 26/05/2020 17:46

Yabu I didn’t know Kent had beaches

It’s the bottom right hand corner of England Grin lots of coast.

Bananalanacake · 26/05/2020 17:50

I miss Camber, I was supposed to be going on a holiday there but now it's been moved to next year.

Nosurveysneeded · 26/05/2020 18:01

Everyone in Kent is respectable - well that is definitely not true!

Standrewsschool · 26/05/2020 18:09

Kent has some beautiful beaches.

Standrewsschool · 26/05/2020 18:10

Kent beaches

Article about Kent beaches

Sparklfairy · 26/05/2020 18:11

Exactly @Nosurveysneeded - I live there for one Grin

Cellardoor23 · 26/05/2020 18:34

I used to visit Broadstairs beach when I was younger and it seemed alright. Never saw any brawls or anything, but nice weather can bring out the knobs no matter where you are. Only lived near there briefly when I was in my teens. We lived in a village not too far away, Minster, which was nice.

Also lived in Chatham, again very briefly, St Mary’s Island if anyone knows that? I don’t know what it’s like now as it was years ago.

Bloops · 26/05/2020 18:39

I live very close to this beach and I'm not surprised at all tbf...

springlike · 26/05/2020 18:41

Lots of narrow minded people and their comments who clearly don't know Kent. Like most places Kent has good and bad areas. Broadstairs beach is always popular so I'm guessing lots of people like it. I live on the coast about 15 minutes away from Broadstairs, it's much quieter. Love it here and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Sea on my doorstep, beautiful countryside for walking and cycling. What's not to like?

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/05/2020 18:57

I was briefly seeing a guy chav who was living in Chatham and it was one of the roughest places I've ever been to.. and I'm someone used to places like Luton, but....

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 26/05/2020 19:04

Because my DH and I are absolute clichès, Margate is on our “list” in the event we have to move back to the SE for work.

We intend to change our son’s name to Wilf if Margate does come up trumps, so don’t worry about that guys

eddiemairswife · 26/05/2020 19:34

Is Kent still known as The Garden of England?

OldLace · 26/05/2020 21:43

@wonkytonkwoman
What is wrong with Whitstable / Canterbury?

DesignedForLife · 26/05/2020 21:46

Wow. I lived in Kent for a long time and can tell you it’s just as diverse as the rest of the country.

They don’t call it Chaversham for nothing you know.

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/05/2020 21:55

I had a revealing conversation with a woman at a conference once. She was from the North East. According to her, teaching in Kent must be easy because we’re all rich here, no social issues or poverty at all. I did ask her if she’d heard of Thanet. 😂
The beaches round Broadstairs and Viking Bay itself are lovely. Shame they get ruined by twats.

Bleepbloopblarp · 26/05/2020 22:03

I remember being really shocked when meeting a bunch of guys on holiday who were from Kent - they were rough as a bears arse! (and I’m from a very dodgy bit of greater Manchester!) - my only experience of Kent was from the H.E Bates books /tv programme The darling buds of May - I thought it was dead posh and countrified! I guess it’s like anywhere though and there are good bits and bad bits.

bigchris · 26/05/2020 22:04

Why is it ok to slag off Kent but not Scotland, Wales or the north , some of the comments on this thread are disgusting

wonkytonkwoman · 26/05/2020 22:04

Nothing wrong with Whitstable I lived there for many years but it's a ridiculously expensive holiday let town now and the summer months can be awful as day trippers leave all their shit behind on the beaches, streets and prom. It was someone who told me about the nickname . I raised my kids there and they've had to move away to afford to live independently.
Likewise Faversham has it's nickname but like everywhere I've lived it has a mix of cultures .I like Kent and I hadn't realised it has such a negative reputation (maybe only on MN though!)

bigchris · 26/05/2020 22:06

If I said this about Liverpool they'd be a riot on here More hillbilly ish. Lots of inbred people with no teeth
