To be surprised to see a beach brawl in Kent?

Just seem it on the DM online ( I know I know) - I'm just surprised during these times of social distancing etc that this happened.
I've lived in Kent and can confirm we are all respectable, RP speaking, home counties residing respectable pillars of the community...

Sussex is much nicer!

Bloodybridget · 26/05/2020 14:25

MsScarlettOHara soap box seaside town? Do you mean a chocolate box seaside town?

jessycake · 26/05/2020 14:26

Broadstairs is my favourite seaside town , mind you when I was a child Margate was no go on a bank holiday because of the Mods and Rockers

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/05/2020 14:29

My older cousin and her DH live in Kent. They are not nice people. These two facts may or may not be connected.

Destroyedpeople · 26/05/2020 14:31

You can tell when someone round here is from Kent they have a strong old fashioned London type accent and when you ask them why they moved they go into a scary diatribe about ethnic minorities. Only that is not the term they use.

GinnyStrupac · 26/05/2020 14:34

One of my dearest and naicest friends is from Kent. However YABU for reading the Fail and for being surprised that the types who flock to crowded beaches on a bank holiday weekend when asked not to do so during a pandemic are also the types not to brawl.

Cosyblanky · 26/05/2020 14:34

I agree about Ramsgate. Absolute dump with nothing going for it. Town seems to be full of small time drug users, for whom discretion is an unknown concept.
Knew a vet who lived there who was cruel to animals, shut her pet cat in a room and left it crying and clawing all night. Was so lazy she left the animals to bite holes in bag of food, rather than feeding them. Ramsgate suited her morality!

letsdolunch321 · 26/05/2020 14:37

Ramsgate & Margate were very similar when I visited.

bigcatlittlecatcardboardbox · 26/05/2020 14:38

This has made me chuckle. I worked my chavvy ass off to get out of my hometown in the Medway Towns (Medders) and now live a very naice life in a very naice part of central London, but I still typed out a very defensive post about Chatham and it's chavs Grin

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 26/05/2020 14:40

For those who don’t know Kent, it includes London suburbs, Tunbridge Wells., Canterbury, Whitstable... and Thanet.

Bromley is somewhat different from Margate.

I can well believe that @Destroyedpeople

I just knew it would be somewhere in Thanet, although like others I thought Margate.

Hate Whitstable though.

squashyhat · 26/05/2020 14:44

Even Tunbridge Wells has some scummy bits.

floppyhare · 26/05/2020 14:44

Would you expect it to be in Essex instead op?

YinMnBlue · 26/05/2020 14:44

In Thanet?
Home of Gary Glitter?
Shock

FredAstaireAteMyHamSandwich · 26/05/2020 14:50

Bromley decent? The shopping centre is full of people who don’t drive or can’t afford the bus to Chavwater. The high street is full of hotdog sellers and people with huge bunches of helium balloons! The Glades is full of gangs wandering around bored out f their skulls.

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 14:51

No. If we are adhering to stereotype it would be in a county with more of a shudder low income demographic shudder

goes to darkened room, crosses self, and says a few Hail Marys

I am not surprised and I live in a nice village in Kent. Some parts of the Thanet area and the Medway towns and Gravesend and Dartford and Maidstone - well you get the picture - are absolutely horrible.
Cliftonville has the highest rate of Covid-19 deaths in Kent.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 26/05/2020 14:53

Well, coming from the first town after the Wantsum, I don’t know Bromley. But I was always led to believe that it was, at the very least, somewhat posher than Margate.

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 14:54

FredAstaireAteMyHamSandwich

Bromley Council is very predominantly Conservative and is generally thought of as a stereotypical middle class suburb. Most people would love to be able to afford a house there.

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 26/05/2020 14:58

I was expecting it to be Camber, but to be fair, the people you see in Camber on a Bank Holiday are mostly Londoners.

mooffie · 26/05/2020 15:03

I thought it was Broadstairs tbh you get those types everywhere, definitely plenty in Bromley

Lynda07 · 26/05/2020 15:03

I am exactly ten houses away from Bromley London Borough (in Greenwich to be precise but nearest shops to walk to are in Chislehurst)! I never knew Bromley was considered 'posh' but then I am not particularly sociological.

I haven't read about the beach brawl. Last time I went down to the Kent coast I stayed in Broadstairs and the year before that, Whitstable. Had a lovely time in both.

EstuaryBird · 26/05/2020 15:04

I was born in Gravesend, spent my working life in East London and now live in Chatham......that’s Chatham in Medway.

Yes, I do speak in the horrible ‘old fashioned London accent’. I don’t tend to go into diatribes about ethnic minorities though, unless it’s the one I’m married to of course.

Medway has its problems but it also has some of the nicest, kindest people you could ever meet.

You all need to learn not to judge people by where they come from or how they speak.

mooffie · 26/05/2020 15:05

I thought the posh parts of Kent were Sevenoaks & Tunbridge Wells

mooffie · 26/05/2020 15:06

I've been on plenty of day trips to the Thanet coastline & always found people polite.
