To be surprised to see a beach brawl in Kent?

Just seem it on the DM online ( I know I know) - I'm just surprised during these times of social distancing etc that this happened.
I've lived in Kent and can confirm we are all respectable, RP speaking, home counties residing respectable pillars of the community...

IDefinitelyHaveFriends, if you are going down that way again, try Pett Level beach. It is out of this world!

MoonBaby1 · 26/05/2020 15:09

I always think Essex gets a raw deal when we have Kent!!

Lynda07 · 26/05/2020 15:09

EstuaryBird , interesting what you say. I'm not that familiar with Medway towns but my son is considering a house somewhere near Darenth, what is it like around there? I've been to Dartford once or twice but don't know the nearby villages.

wonkytonkwoman · 26/05/2020 15:14

Well, i moved from 'Shitstable' to 'Chaversham' about 6 months ago. I won't tell you what name Canterbury is also known by (where I've also lived and hate with a passion becasue it's a DUMP).

I can confirm that there are knobheads (some very wealthy, naicely spoken and upper middle class ones) in all these and some very nice, decent ones too.
Whitstable residents tend not to like the DFL's very much though, IME.

There was once a brawl in a Kent pub over a packet of peanuts, so not really surprised tbh.

OneNewName · 26/05/2020 15:19

@StirlingWork I think you mean interactive - I prefer your version though! Grin

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 26/05/2020 15:21

"horrible old fashioned London accent". Wow.

AnneElliott · 26/05/2020 15:26

I don't think the people that live in Bromley visit the Glades!

I feel sorry for all those seaside towns. I loved Cliftonville as a child. It's a shame they've gone so downhill but that will be as a result on incomers because housing is cheap.

I remember going to a session at work about ASB in Margate and the presenter showed a slide where they mapped out the children's homes ( put there by London councils) the parole hostels ( put there by MoJ) and the drug houses ( attracted there by the former). These all lined up and it became clear why there were so many problems for the local authority to solve.

EstuaryBird · 26/05/2020 15:31

Lynda07. Darenth is nice. Lovely parks, plenty of open space. My friend lives on the Darenth side of Dartford and loves it, the only problem at times can be traffic due to proximity of M25 and Dartford Crossing.

Definitely worth looking at and prices are good for so close to London

Siameasy · 26/05/2020 15:36

The chavs in Kent are another level compared to London. More hillbilly ish. Lots of inbred people with no teeth (I live in East Kent ex-South Londoner) but overall the people are nicer, I agree with a PP.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 26/05/2020 15:37

I don’t think Broadstairs or Whitstable appreciates your pity, AnneElliot. And for that matter, Ramsgate has nice areas, and Margate’s old town is definitely improving (although as my dd kept saying, it’s a bit #wanttobeinBrighton).

mooffie · 26/05/2020 15:39

@Siameasy I'm a bored & raised South Londoner, maybe that's why I find them friendly 😄

StirlingWork · 26/05/2020 15:39

OneNewName - interactive!! thats it!!

Tbf some of the beaches are fab

BaronessBomburst · 26/05/2020 15:41

Royal Tunbridge Wells is as close to the Sussex border as you can get. I'm sure it's trying to sneak across.

LolaDarkdestroyer · 26/05/2020 15:47

Fucking shameful

Standrewsschool · 26/05/2020 16:02

Had a lovely walk on a Kent beach near Whistable yesterday morning. Kent isn’t all that bad. Like all places, you get good people and bad, nice places and not so nice.

Margate has improved over the years, due to The Turner centre and Dreamlands. The beachfront is a lot nicer than it used to be.

YinMnBlue · 26/05/2020 16:03

Lynda and IDefinitelyHaveFriends Camber and Pett Levels are in Sussex.

Which is entirely different.

..
So they are. I get a bit confused. Been to both and Pett Level is definitely a wonderful place to visit and doesn't take a year to reach from SE London. However, not as near as Whitstable!

CallmeAngelina · 26/05/2020 16:09

I grew up in Tunbridge Wells. It's very nice there but we don't labour the 'royal' bit.

ramarama · 26/05/2020 16:19

Broadstairs is quite lovely (and I'm pretty much a snob) But my local friends there have told me before that there is a regular (annual perhaps?) fight on the beach between some of the local youth.

It's still lovely the rest of the time

butterpuffed · 26/05/2020 16:28

It's actually in East Sussex but you're right , it's out of this world . Trees from the Ice Age showing above the sea when it's low tide . Very creepy but fascinating place, reminds me of Twin Peaks !

I live by the sea in Kent , most visitors come from other counties.

I don't think any of you should join the Kent Tourist Board Grin
