Anyone watch the car crash interview today?. What an absolute load of bollocks, no apology lots of inning and ahhing. Cummings is an odious little man too full of his own self importance. Must have a lot of dirt on the government I think as anyone else would have been sacked. Had to go to Durham incase they both got sick, his wife was unwell - can't he look after a 4 year old? He had to drive to a beauty spot half an hour away from Durham to see if he was ok to drive?? Doesn't his wife drive? Lost all respect for the government, not that I had much to start with.

Aside from the rights and wrongs of what Dominic Cummings did and whether or not he was lying (personally, I'm surprised people could have any doubts about that Hmm), his own conduct and the conduct of the PM and various others in the government in this matter does clear up one small mystery...

Why, in a country traditionally regarded as having good governance, was the government Covid-19 response so woeful and the death toll so high?

Dominic Cummings is the PM's senior adviser. His conduct during lockdown, combined with today's joint performance from him and the PM (and Boris's utter spinelessness), go some way to answering the above question.

On a personal note, I watched today's interview with a ghoulish fascination long after Cummings had ceased saying anything new. Maybe he should have taken some tips from Bill Clinton (who largely got away with it):

'I want to say one thing to the British people. I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again. I did not have birthday cake at that castle, Barnard Castle. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time; never. These allegations are false. And I need to go back to work for the British people'.

I actually laughed at the outrageous claims he was expecting the public to suck up! His actions are completely inexcusable. Travelling to the other side of the country knowing that they were symptomatic with Covid19. His family visited a hospital in the North East putting health care workers and other patients in that setting at a risk they would not otherwise have encountered and he suggested he would have put a taxi driver at risk had one been available

It would have been easier to return to work by remaining in London and he admitted he had not considered or exhausted childcare options there at his primary residence. When my son was sent home from school we self-isolated and didn't bolt to relatives houses despite having none nearby.

He also stopped short of apologising for damaging the Government's public health message. This is not good enough, we expect those in public office to set an example, never has it been more important to act responsibly or show contrition for falling short of expected standards than when facing this pandemic. It is clearly not what Boris wants to do but for public confidence in the Government and not to have this thrown in his face repeatedly he needs to remove him from his role. To be honest I'm surprised he hasn't resigned he's going to need a flak jacket to go over his usual Teflon tshirt.

There's a particularly obnoxious type of liar who doesn't care whether you believe them or not, it's all about what you can prove to be a lie.

I've no doubt that the delay this afternoon was them finding out that the Barnard Castle visit had been proven so he came up with that stupid lie about his eyes.

If the second visit, or something else, is also proved he'll come up with another completely implausible story and we'll be expected to suck it up because... well why not?
