Why are supermarket substitutions not sensible?

I was so looking forward to my paneer makhani and now I can’t make it😔

First world problems I know.

You could always make your own paneer.

CaptainButtock · 25/05/2020 18:45

Mmmmmmm....paneer makhani ❤

DartmoorChef · 25/05/2020 18:45

Feta is a great substitute for panneer and will work fine in that dish.

Really? I love paneer and am not particularly keen on feta. I can take a little feta but not much.

It’s in Waitrose - and has been the whole of lockdown. I love it.

DeathMetalMum · 25/05/2020 18:47

We were given double Gloucester for cheddar in our last order. Hmm

Oooh, away to google...

Feta for paneer is perfectly sensible substitute Grin

7yo7yo · 25/05/2020 18:48

Make it yourself? Milk and vinegar. Easy enough to do though a bit of a faff.

7yo7yo · 25/05/2020 18:48

Then use the extra to make spring rolls.

FlamingoAndJohn · 25/05/2020 18:48

Halloumi would have been a better sub I would think. Feta is too crumbly.

I got some last week thankfully, made makhani last night and saag aloo. We’re shielding though so get our one delivery per week and that’s it.

Again that is a perfectly reasonable substitute. If they had sent cottage cheese then that would be different.

tabulahrasa · 25/05/2020 18:49

Feta for paneer is a rubbish substitution, they taste completely different and cook differently... halloumi, maybe ... but not feta!

Wilberforce1 · 25/05/2020 18:50

I got frozen peas instead of ice cubes last week from Sainsbury's! 🤷‍♀️

bumblingbovine49 · 25/05/2020 18:50

Feta is definitely not a suitable alternative for paneer. Hallumi is better as you can use that in a curry . Feta is definitely not something I'd use to make a curry

Crikey0000 · 25/05/2020 18:50

I got strong French caffeinated coffee as a substitute for mild decaf. I'd rather have had none.

Dontlickthetrolley · 25/05/2020 18:52

I rejected £27 worth of substitutes from Morrisons last week. Am going back to Sainsbury click and collect!

AntiHop · 25/05/2020 18:54

I'd be happy with that substitution. Yes it's a different cheese but if there's no paneer, I'd rather that than nothing at all.

emz771 · 25/05/2020 18:54

Also do you have an Asian supermarket anywhere near you?

Asda won’t take substitutes back. I tried to reject their palm oil and sugar filled substitute for my lovely pip and nut peanut butter but couldn’t Sad

I wish!!

We’re shielding so not visiting shops right now but even normally our choice is rubbish.

I used to live somewhere with amazing ethnic shops and REALLY miss it.

That’s just stupid.

Feta is in no way a decent sub for paneer. They might as well have given you a block of cheddar!

Halloumi maybe, although I'm not entirely convinced. But Feta is nothing like paneer.
