To think if I order paneer I don’t want bloody feta!

Why are supermarket substitutions not sensible?

I was so looking forward to my paneer makhani and now I can’t make it😔

First world problems I know.

Paneer is so easy to make.
Feta is not a substitute.

The supermarket employees are doing their best, but don't expect them to know the niceties of cooking.

Is there not the facility to refuse substitutions, either when placing the order or accepting delivery?

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2020 19:03

Halloumi maybe, although I'm not entirely convinced

I love halloumi and could have used it though not in a curry. Feta I really struggle with.

I can’t refuse them at the door. I tried last week and driver said no. I’ll need to update my preferences online.

I ordered clotted cream for scones from Morrison's. They sent a carton of elmlea.

That’s worse than my feta. Elmlea isn’t even cream!

As a new found lover of paneer, YANBU! I make saag paneer at least once a week, if I'd been given feta instead I probably would have cried (lockdown is getting to me!)

What's paneer makhani? And how can you make your own paneer? Shock

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/05/2020 19:17

I make my own paneer. Dead easy - just heat some whole milk with lemon juice and salt and as it seperates pick up the curds and pop into a muslin cloth. Then tie it all tightly together and hang it over your kitchen tap overnight. You’ll have nice firm paneer in the morning.

Oldraver · 25/05/2020 19:19

I once ordered Persil Non-Bio as it was on offer. As usual with offers they didnt have any so sent Persil Bio

I just couldn't understand why they would substitute like this, any non-bio would of done

bumblingbovine49 · 25/05/2020 19:20

I'd have agreed with you about curried halloumi until recently. We had a Gousto recipe which was curried halloumi which I decided to try. It was quite nice and having tried it, I could see it might work as a paneer substitute

Trevsadick · 25/05/2020 19:23

actually feta and paneer can be substituted.

My dad made paneer saganaki when he couldn't get feta. I tried it too. Was a great sub.

So for at least some people it's a good sub.

As an aside, asda usually emails me subs before and I click accept or decline.

NoProblem123 · 25/05/2020 19:23

Didn’t we have a substitute thread recently?
Still grinning at the person who had her barn laid eggs substituted for a barn owl ornament Grin

Star81 · 25/05/2020 19:24

Have you had a look at the online shop site as they can allow you to not allow substitutes on certain / all products then you’ll only get what you actually want.

Tableclothing · 25/05/2020 19:24

Morrison's sent me bog standard pesto instead of the vegan pesto I ordered. A potentially dangerous substitution given the dairy allergy in our family. They refused to take it back as well. Twats.

Chrisinthemorning · 25/05/2020 19:24

We had this substitute too, I sent it back (Asda). You have to tell them before you touch it that you don’t want it.
Halloumi works well in saag paneer, we tried it. It’s arguably nicer!

WendyHoused · 25/05/2020 19:25

I've had a meat feast pizza substituted for a margarita pizza and chicken curry substituted for vegetable curry. Also meaty 'same brand' item substituted veggie brand item rather than another brand's veggie option. And same brand regular lager for alcohol-free lager - rather missing the point.

The delivery guy says often the people filling the online orders are kids - never fed a family in their lives, just grab whatever's close.

WreckTangled · 25/05/2020 19:25

For asda you can request refunds on their app. They're allowing this due to you not being able to refuse anything. I've done this a few times and it's been no problem. I know that doesn't help with your paneer situation though! I once got a pomegranate instead of bananas Confused and no sub for four rolls of loo roll (pre coronavirus!) Hmm

thisenglishlife · 25/05/2020 19:25

Feta is a great substitute for panneer
On what planet? 😂

Fluffybutter · 25/05/2020 19:26

Who the hell would think paneer and feta are the similar ?!
Must be people who have never had it !
Feta is crumbly and salty and paneer is mild and spongey . .
Paneer makhani sounds so good

Hall84 · 25/05/2020 19:26

I ordered lazy garlic from Asda. I got 5 tubs of dried garlic.
I also had paprika subbed for smoked paprika. Unfortunately, I already had regular paprika on the order so now have 2. 🙄

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2020 19:26

What's paneer makhani?

It’s a delicious spicy tomato/cream gravy with paneer.

I make the below but use paneer rather than chicken obviously.

My Indian self is horrified that anyone would think feta could be a reasonable substitute for paneer . I need to go lie down after reading that Grin

cyclingmad · 25/05/2020 19:27

Then go do your own shopping otherwise accept the small print you sign up to or dont ask for substitutes if you are given the choice online. Not hard really.

thisenglishlife · 25/05/2020 19:29

What's paneer makhani? Like a butter chicken curry, but with paneer instead of chicken.

A good paneer tikki even better! It works with those flavours so well.

quarantinevibes · 25/05/2020 19:29

Asda took back my subs last week. Did you touch them? I told them before they handed me the bag so that could be why. Btw YANBU I wouldn’t be using feta Envy

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 25/05/2020 19:30

Feta is lovely though . But no. YANBU
