Why are supermarket substitutions not sensible?

I was so looking forward to my paneer makhani and now I can’t make it😔

First world problems I know.

I ordered Manchego and was sent Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni instead 😁

peachypetite · 25/05/2020 21:17

This is why you can turn off substitutions.

I asked for Chedder and they sent me a small gorge in the Dordogne full of tiny little Neanderthals

cyclingmad, you missed the bit where she said We’re shielding so not visiting shops right now

Substitutes are not created equal. It's a huge pity that supermarkets are not substituting in an intelligent way.

mylittlesandwich · 25/05/2020 22:56

OP you can still get a refund for useless substitutions this is on their website

@sexnotgender go into the Asda website and view the order and you can request a refund of any unsuitable subs. The click and collect guy at our local store on a temp contract is telling everyone to do it and waving everyone off with a "enjoy your subs, they're free"😂. We have rejected everything, but refunded loads of crazy subs and squashed bread from where they pack the car for us (have to stay in your car the whole time at our local store and they pack it int he boot for you)

By the time you wrote all the replies you could have made enough paneer to feed the whole (socially distanced) street!!

Seriously though, it’s not cheesemaking really, it’s almost as easy as washing veg in the colander. Try it!

ilovesooty · 26/05/2020 01:31

I go through my order and un tick anything I don't want substituted. Seemingly you have to do it every time though.

OP we use feta on tarts. Puff pastry, top with Philadelphia, tomatoes, spinach ( wilt first with boiling water) crumbly feta, bake in over for 20 minutes or so. In Greek salad ( doced red onion, olives, cucumber, tomato, feta, olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing)

Cant imagine it in a curry though. Love paneer. Going to try making our own.. can I get children to do it and call it home education?

IsoBordem · 26/05/2020 09:43

A few years ago my vegetarian sausages were replaced with beef sausages. My mum who is a celiac also has had some gluten free items replaced with the regular items!

We ended up turning of allowing substitutions cause they got it so wrong!

Somethingkindaoooo · 26/05/2020 10:02

Ooh,Greek salad...yum.

I put feta in a tray bake. Loads of veg, smoked paprika, crumble in feta. Also yum 😊

mumwon · 26/05/2020 21:39

my last delivery had a pack of 15 eggs less 2 broken & one that escaped I couldn't find it in any of the bags - did it hatch, fly off??
