Why are supermarket substitutions not sensible?

I was so looking forward to my paneer makhani and now I can’t make it😔

First world problems I know.

Yes it was Asda.

Thank you @Northofsomewhere I do understand the difficulties. I’m not mad. Just a little disgruntled as I was so looking forward to my paneer.

In tesco you can take the substitute tick off, or put in a note to say if substitute only substitute for another paneer

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2020 20:13

Thanks. I need to go through my substitute list and take off all the stuff I don’t want substituted.

I once got red win instead of white. If anyone should know that I exclusively drink white wine it’s Tesco...!

grumpytoddler1 · 25/05/2020 20:25

I got double cream instead of sour cream twice from Morrisons. They won't accept it back but you can fill in an online form and get it refunded. Obviously didn't help with the fact that I had no sour cream, but at least I didn't have to pay for double cream that I didn't want!

mumwon · 25/05/2020 20:29

if memory serves me right - don't you add a dash of lemon juice & boil milk & strain the curds & whey through fine clothe (hang cloth above bowl for a few hours & let it drain - Oh an add a dash of salt & shape
(use to do this when we were first married & had to make something out of nothing)

That is right. However in the current circumstances of working full time with a toddler I’m not exactly blessed with spare time for cheese making Smile

I have worked as a picker and I can confirm that the system suggests a substitution. The picker can overrule the system but many don't bother because it wastes time and they have a very strict pick rate to meet.

Unfortunately not all the substitutions suggested by the system are sensible - think red peppers as a substitute for a large cucumber and condoms as a substitute for a pregnancy test (that one was difficult for the driver to explain on the doorstep!!!!!),

cheesemongery · 25/05/2020 20:34

As a recent convert to paneer and a lover of feta YADNBU OP - Feta in a hot dish? Crumbly dissolving salty feta v's textured creamy paneer. I feel your pain.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 25/05/2020 20:38

Thst sounds bloody delicious. Dinner tomorrow is sorted. We usually use cottage cheese or ricotta because we live in the arse end of Denmark where very little is available. Which of those would the hive mind of MN recommend?

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2020 20:43

I’d probably use cottage cheese as paneer is technically cottage cheese I think ?

Mooballs · 25/05/2020 20:44

Oh FFS not this again.

Twillow · 25/05/2020 20:44

What substitute would you have preferred? Apologies if you've already answered that, only skimmed the thread.

Idododoidadada · 25/05/2020 20:46

Asda won’t take substitutes back

But they will refund if you request a refund as an unsuitable substitute.

You can add lemon juice to make it sour cream.

In Asda? Curious as DS likes refresh chocolate milk. One week i had strawberry, one week banana & another week long life yazoo chocolate. All were fine I suppose but if the system subs why not the same sub each time?
Tesco let you request an alternative you would be happy accept instead.

thisenglishlife · 25/05/2020 20:46

I'd cut halloumi into cubes and wash it to use as a substitute, but it's still not as good as paneer!

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2020 20:51

Oh FFS not this again.

Of FFS, maybe don’t read it if it bothers you so much.

"Then go do your own shopping otherwise accept the small print you sign up to or dont ask for substitutes if you are given the choice online. Not hard really."

Nice comment cyclingmad HmmDo you know what shielding means?

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2020 20:52

Thanks @tobee I was just ignoring the arsehole comment.

Paneer is incredibly easy to make at home - all you need is milk, lemon juice and a big muslin square or even a large cotton handkerchief to strain it. Crumblier the Paneer, the fresher it is.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/05/2020 21:00

I've been given feta instead of Cheshire once, because it's a "white cheese". It's true, but I think Wensleydale, Caerphilly or Lancashire are a bit more similar!

GabsAlot · 25/05/2020 21:08

why ae asda not excepting rejections thats ridiculous you didnt pick it u shoulldnt have to keep it

DoyouthinkIcare · 25/05/2020 21:08

@Idododoidadada

Not Asda but if our system made a stupid suggestion and the picker overruled it then the picker would make the decision so it could be different every time.

feellikeanalien · 25/05/2020 21:13

I once ordered Huggies pull ups for DD and got mattress protectors as a substitute.

I suppose I could have cut them up and stuck them togetherHmm.
