To report neighbour who’s gone abroad for half term

Hi all,
I’ve just found out my neighbour, husband & kids have gone to Europe for half term. They’ve driven & say they’ve gone to visit parents (they are originally from Italy). I’m totally furious. I’d love to see my elderly unwell parents, but like everyone (except Dominic Cummings), have followed the advice & stayed at home. Why should she be allowed back in when she’s gone for no good reason? Also, her kids will be back at school with my daughter from June 1st. I don’t feel comfortable with the fact they’ve all travelled on ferries & across Europe & then coming into school. It’s just not fair how these people do what they want with no repercussions. But is reporting her a step too far? Presumably she would know it was me & then never speak to me again!

It's not illegal to travel abroad, it's not illegal to travel in the U.K. - it is illegal to go to holiday accommodation/2nd home. I've had to travel (within U.K., during the initial stricter lockdown) and the police said that if I considered it an essential journey then it was fine (my adult dd is autistic)

I really didn’t expect this to blow up in the way it did! Thanks to all responders- it really has made me think about lots of things, including my attitude to my neighbour. My post was written out of anxiety, heightened by the Cummings news tbh. I get very frustrated when people don’t follow rules & put others at risk.

I live with a vulnerable person and had made the difficult decision to send my daughter back to school as she is suffering so much in this & cries every day asking when she can see her friends. I’m worried about her mental health as she’s quite anxious about everything now.

I’ve made this decision partly by looking at the London infection rates which are very low & assessing the risk to be worth it. It’s made me really upset to realise that people are travelling & risk is therefore not really measurable.

I’m certainly don’t think I’m a curtain twitcher or a racist & have never so much as written a note in some one’s windscreen! And yes, I’ve no idea who I would have reported them too - I guess I feel a deep sense of unfairness that I was trying to resolve in some way. But I’ve realised I’ll have to suck it up & probably keep my daughter at home.

Also, I am a regular poster on here, but I changed my account for this as I was worried I would identify my neighbour.

Thanks again for all the replies & sorry if I upset anyone x

And even when the 14 day isolation thing kicks in after 8th of June I’m sure if you think your mental health would suffer then you don’t have to do it. You know, safeguarding and all that. You can use your judgement and safeguard your mental health.

Natalie London. You probably didn’t’t expect such a roasting. Mums net has got very viscous and unforgiving of pretty much everything. I can’t understand your concerns, not sure there is much you can do about it though.

I think the Govt have very strangely left a window for people to travel without no having to quarantine if they go somewhere with no quarantine rules and get back to UK before the 8th June. It does seem strange. If I could be bothered and din’t Have work, pets etc to think of I would definitely skip off for a week in .europe this week as it looks allowable right now, Not ‘recommended’ so possibly travel insurance may not pay up if a claim was required.

ToelessPobble · 25/05/2020 10:54

I would consider informing the school as could have a direct impact on other kid's and teaching staff depending on what they did and who they had contact with etc. But the authorities is a bit pointless unless they are breaking quarantine rules.

puffinandkoala · 25/05/2020 10:57

Is it against the rules to visit elderly family? Thought you could visit for care reasons right from the word go.

Not sure what the Italian rules were but they have eased them now anyway.

Someone I know is on the IOW right now, I assume she's visiting her elderly parents as that's where she is from originally.

Greenpop21 · 25/05/2020 15:02

You could always provide care for a vulnerable person.

Greenpop21 · 25/05/2020 15:02

You couldn’t just visit.

StayinginSummer · 25/05/2020 16:15

OP you are right and all the people arguing against you have no idea how much his pandemic relies on good souls like and others staying where you are and not travelling.

All those saying they travelled and it’s all fine - the only reason you are getting away with it and not another 50,000 people dying is because most people aren’t like you and are staying at home.

I have SN child and relatives in need, yet I am not travelling because I want to lessen the number of people dying.

But you can’t see your unwell parents even if we are allowed to drive 1000 miles a day, the virus is still here. Your parents need to stay shielded for a lot longer than 8 weeks.

Coffeeandbeans · 26/05/2020 14:56

Italian campsites are open including the pools.

bumblingbovine49 · 26/05/2020 15:23

We can fly to Italy from 2 June officially so not too far away really. You do need to self isolate when you come back though. You don't have to when you get to Italy as they have just lifted that restriction

I’m just watching flight radar (we are being buzzed by a helicopter and it’s driving me nuts). I have been watching the planes going into Heathrow - Tokyo, Rome. Mexico City, Riyadh, Beijing...

Of course all visitors will be absolutely healthy and self quarantine...

FWIW as has been the case for a while a lot of those flights, especially the Long Haul ones, will be carry freight only (despite being passenger aircraft).

Lordfrontpaw · 26/05/2020 15:57

There are loads - and it defiantly looks more coming is as the weeks go by. (Not that I am obsessively tracking flights Blush)

BelfryBat · 26/05/2020 15:58

these people???

You sound as though you object to them having relatives abroad.

Overthegardenfence · 26/05/2020 17:17

My neighbours, So mum, dad and kids all packed up their car and set off to France yesterday to go to their second home! After having had their parents round the day before for lunch.

BeltaneBride · 26/05/2020 19:20

'report'
Pathetic.
Act according to what you think the rules tell you and let other ex do the same.
'Report' ugh'

isadoradancing123 · 26/05/2020 20:11

If the government wanted to implement this they should have closed our borders, they havent, so how has she broken the law

I know there are loads of flights on but flight radar doesn't tell you what's on board the aircraft it tracks.

A couple of the major users of Heathrow have had hardly any passengers on it's Long Haul flights for weeks now. Many of their aircraft, especially those arriving from the Far East and the States, have been freight only ( including freight on the seats).

Well that'll be interesting if they get stopped by either the Border police or the Gendarmes...visiting a second home is not a valid reason for entering France ATM, and French residents are only allowed to drive a maximum of 100km (radius) unless they have an essential reason/for an essential purpose and have supporting documentation....

Maybe they'll get lucky.....
