To report neighbour who’s gone abroad for half term

Hi all,
I’ve just found out my neighbour, husband & kids have gone to Europe for half term. They’ve driven & say they’ve gone to visit parents (they are originally from Italy). I’m totally furious. I’d love to see my elderly unwell parents, but like everyone (except Dominic Cummings), have followed the advice & stayed at home. Why should she be allowed back in when she’s gone for no good reason? Also, her kids will be back at school with my daughter from June 1st. I don’t feel comfortable with the fact they’ve all travelled on ferries & across Europe & then coming into school. It’s just not fair how these people do what they want with no repercussions. But is reporting her a step too far? Presumably she would know it was me & then never speak to me again!

Gosh these posts are so boring. Get a life.

Moomin12345 · 24/05/2020 22:26

Yawn.

Donelurking · 24/05/2020 22:27

unreasonable. “It’s not fair...” really? Grow up.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 24/05/2020 22:28

Report your neighbour to whom? And for what?

God, I detest this curtain-twitching mentality.

Leflic · 24/05/2020 22:30

Absolutely agree with destroyedpeople I used to wonder how it is a society accepted Nazi rule and now I can imagine folk cheering via zoom for public chastisment of those who infringe lockdown guidance.

Scary isn’t it.

Presumably if any of them show symptoms they won’t be sending child to school on June 1st. If they are asymptomatic then that’s no different to if they hadn’t if left and were none the wiser.

changeitupagain · 24/05/2020 22:30

If the ferries are there and running they have every right to get on one, they're not doing anything illegal. However if they return they have to do the compulsory 14 day quarantine.

To be quite frank the UK right now if the worst affected country in Europe so they're not posing any extra risk by visiting their parents abroad than they would visiting their parents in the country. And would you really feel so much anger and vitriol towards them if they just drove somewhere else in the UK?

The people they are putting most at risk are those in the country they are visiting. But if this country chooses to let them in that up to them and this is again, none of your business.

roarfeckingroar · 24/05/2020 22:31

Absolutely none of your business. How bloody weird to go out of your way to report someone when you know nothing of what they're doing or why.

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/05/2020 22:31

Aren't Italy's borders still closed? Until June 3rd? If that's the case surely they're wasting their time?

If I'm wrong, and they do go, I'm not sure who you would report to? But the poster who suggested telling the school so your children aren't near them is a good idea. I don't know what to suggest but they've been really clever by going now so they can avoid the 14 day quarantine on arrival back here which is frustrating

TurnOffTheTv · 24/05/2020 22:31
  1. Report to who?
  2. How exactly are they getting there?
  3. How are they getting in? Borders are closed aren’t they?
RantyAnty · 24/05/2020 22:32

Did you tell your neighbours how appalling you think their behaviour is when they were telling you what they were doing?

This is exactly why I keep to myself. You can't trust anyone. Neighbour nice to your face, and chomping at the bit to turn me in the moment my car leaves.

BrimfulOfBaba · 24/05/2020 22:33

YABU you have no idea what their circumstances are or what might have come up for them.

FizzyPink · 24/05/2020 22:34

What are the rules about going abroad right now? A friend decided she was sick of lockdown in London last week so flew home to Ireland and she said the flight was pretty full. Why were all these people travelling?

HannahStern · 24/05/2020 22:35

Natalie joins Mumsnet especially to report this.

Lynda07 · 24/05/2020 22:35

I am very surprised they've been allowed out of the country, frankly, or that Italy will let them in. As for it being 'half term' - has there been any term? Are you quite sure they've gone abroad? It doesn't ring true to me.

No, don't report them, that wouldn't do any good.

There's nothing to stop you driving to see parents as long as you take all the necessary precautions and your parents do the same. However if you can't do that for whatever reason there is little point in you being resentful of others who can.

I doubt everyone will be sending their kids back to school on 1st June.

peperethecat · 24/05/2020 22:36

Oh for god's sake, mind your own bloody business.

shinynewapple2020 · 24/05/2020 22:37

zeddybrek · 24/05/2020 22:40

Mind your own business.

You never know the whole story and there could be a genuine need that they don't need to tell you about. Be kind and understanding and focus on other aspects of your life.

Lightline · 24/05/2020 22:41

Jealous and nosy spring to mind. Worry about your own life not theirs

wildcherries · 24/05/2020 22:43

Presumably she would know it was me & then never speak to me again!

Choices have consequences.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 24/05/2020 22:45

Hate to break it to you but the police won't be remotely interested. They can't, you can't, nobody can police every citizen's every move. Nor can they analyze every nuance of every decision and every angle of justification undertaken before making those moves. That's neither practical nor desirable. I realize this must be extremely disappointing to you and other similar Neighbourhood Prefects. Shame.

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2020 22:46

Eurotunnel hasn’t stopped running. Our neighbours have returned to Asia That's one hell of a trip Grin

I'm surprised tits possible to get the ferry atm. I'd be quite happy to stay indoors for two weeks if it meant I got to see family in abroad. Maybe now is the ideal time to go,to get back before 14 days quarantine on return is imposed.

And who are you going to report to? My neighbours got their massive camper van out yesterday. Maybe they're off abroad? Who would I report to? 101?

LynetteScavo · 24/05/2020 22:46

Sorry I forgot the HmmHmm and Hmm

ProseccoBubbleFantasies · 24/05/2020 22:49

Pre-covid I occasionally used to wonder what kind of people went to public executions.

Since covid, I now know

It amazes me that the UK's borders are still open and people are able to travel tbh.

I am in the Channel Islands and our borders have been closed since March. We now have only 12 active CV cases and this is the reason why.

OP I agree, it is madness, and even worse that they are allowed to travel
