To report neighbour who’s gone abroad for half term

Natalielondon · 24/05/2020 21:41

Hi all,
I’ve just found out my neighbour, husband & kids have gone to Europe for half term. They’ve driven & say they’ve gone to visit parents (they are originally from Italy). I’m totally furious. I’d love to see my elderly unwell parents, but like everyone (except Dominic Cummings), have followed the advice & stayed at home. Why should she be allowed back in when she’s gone for no good reason? Also, her kids will be back at school with my daughter from June 1st. I don’t feel comfortable with the fact they’ve all travelled on ferries & across Europe & then coming into school. It’s just not fair how these people do what they want with no repercussions. But is reporting her a step too far? Presumably she would know it was me & then never speak to me again!

They could be leaving to attend a funeral or other pressing matters for all you know.
This

Leave it to the official channels. If there are rules governing where people can travel, then someone will stop them. If they aren't stopped, presumably they aren't breaking any rules.
And this

Sounds to me you're just envious, having realised they could legally visit family while you can't. Well, tough.

noraclavicle · 24/05/2020 23:31

People should be staying at home to stop the spread of the virus, not turning a bling eye and saying meh, its up to them innit FFS

How many miscreants have you been merrily grassing up, then FunnysInLaJardin?

I think it’s more that many of us are utterly fed up with the endless stream of ‘I don’t know what the exact circumstances of person xyz’s movements are, but I will judge them nontheless & I really, really want MN’s widespread approval for dobbing them in to the authorities’ threads.

My work colleague hasn’t seen her family for months - she had approval to travel, she’s stayed home for weeks, is isolating while she’s in Italy & will isolate once she gets back, before we come off furlough. I bet you that wouldn’t stop some curtain-twitcher from hitting up the fuzz though.

ffsgivemeausername · 24/05/2020 23:32

You do all realise there is no war? There is no genocide. A pandemic is very different and the rules are there to save your lives, not turn you into a camp. Such a stupid fucking comparison.

No wonder the uk is fucked when you're all doing as you please and not wanting to 'grass' people for potentially infecting others.

Justcallmebebes · 24/05/2020 23:32

I live under East Midlands Airport flight path and 3 planes taken off this evening. Had I better report them?

Thurmanmurman · 24/05/2020 23:33

Mind your own business

MitziK · 24/05/2020 23:34

Maybe one of them doesn't feel great and the father is making sure he doesn't have to look after the kids there is no danger of the children starving to death in case he starts feeling a little bit peaky tomorrow?

YgritteSnow · 24/05/2020 23:36

My neighbours have gone too. I won't report them. What's the point now? Seriously, no one cares anymore 🤷🏼‍♀️

Destroyedpeople · 24/05/2020 23:38

I don't think it's a 'stupid comparison' at all. I wasn't suggesting there was a 'war' or a 'genocide' merely pointing out how easy and quick it is to make people turn on their neighbours and to want to 'report ' them for breaking some vague 'rules' .
And Yeh it's worrying. When they come for the 'illegals' who will be reporting their immigrant neighbours 'just in case'? People like op and others on this thread thats who.

noraclavicle · 24/05/2020 23:44

No wonder the uk is fucked when you're all doing as you please

That’s a very big assumption you’re making...

NCagainwhenwhenwhen · 24/05/2020 23:45

Havent RTFT but agree with OP - we aren't allowed to travel and stay away over night are we, so that alone means they are breaking the rules. I have no idea if Italy are letting people in, or how the ferries are policing anything, but hopefully these people will be picked up under the plans to get returning travellers to self isolate. Trouble is - the sort who break the rules to travel aren't going to bother about the rules when they get back, are they?

It does feel petty to report friends and neighbours - but they shouldn't be breaking the rules. And if you did, I doubt anything would happen. These plans for a 14 day isolation are un-enforceable as the police can't go round knocking on doors. Unless they affix ankle tags it's just a joke!

Charlieiscool · 24/05/2020 23:46

It’s fine for the politicians to do it so it’s a free for all now.

noraclavicle · 24/05/2020 23:46

I’m not ‘doing as I please,’ thanks very much, and I daresay not many of the others not wanting to wave pitchforks are either...we’re just not keen on any apparent desire to dob in our neighbours.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 24/05/2020 23:48

No, keep your beak out

GabsAlot · 24/05/2020 23:49

noone was supposed to go on holiday shame the quarantine rule hasnt come in

i actually thought italy was still checking peoples reaqsons for coming in

Destroyedpeople · 24/05/2020 23:49

Fuck no I am v far from 'doing as I please' but I am not about to start dobbing in my neighbours for perceived infringements of some vague 'rule'.

MinorArcana · 24/05/2020 23:50

Well, given that the prime minister has confirmed that it’s ok to travel to see your parents when you’ve actually got coronavirus, I don’t see what the point is of reporting (presumably) healthy people for doing the exact same thing Hmm

If they turn up at school you can report them if they are not isolating for 14 days. Depends if their surname is Cummings really.
.......
The Cummings family did quarantine. We don't know the missus actually had the virus, only that she displayed some symptoms. It could have been anything. However they kept their distance from people for fourteen days. 'Little Cummings' is only four, I doubt he'll be going to school anyway.

Well OP, after 9 weeks of watching my husband sink into the relapse of a depression that left him suicidal last year, we've just travelled 300 miles to move in with my parents because I couldn't look after him and our two young children and work.
....
You did the right thing for your family. I hope now you can relax and your husband will gradually recover.

We can't walk in other people's shoes and sometimes quick decisions have to be made.

MaybeNew · 24/05/2020 23:53

I have been really frightened by other people’s delight in judging and informing on other people. A friend of mine who grew up in East Germany told me that the queues outside the shop and the enthusiastic snitching reminded her of her childhood. Get a grip. Do what you think is right and let other people make their own decisions. If they break the law, they will be caught. They can hardly leave the country without anyone knowing.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 24/05/2020 23:55

Op I think the world has gone mad. Of course your neighbours shouldn't be going on holiday. I would be really angry too. To suggest that you are a rasist is compleatly and utterly bat shit.
I don't think there is any point in reporting them though because clearly no one gives a shit. I actually know somone who went on holiday during lockdown then screamed at their neighbours for not clapping the nhs. When I called them out on their hypocrisy I recieved a load of abuse.
Probabaly just best to let it go and hope for some karma. You never know maybe someone will burgle the house while they're away.

Destroyedpeople · 25/05/2020 00:00

You think they deserve to get burgled?

Right.

IndiaMay · 25/05/2020 00:01

TBH who gives a sh*t? Let them do them and you do you. People have been in lockdown so long they've gone mad, patrolling their neighbours and reporting them (curious who you report to?!)

Just close the curtains and focus on yourself and the things you can have control over.

noraclavicle · 25/05/2020 00:07

Yeah! Like the key worker who had her tyres slashed because some fuckwit didn’t know her from Adam or what she was contributing to society decided that because she was staying in rented accommodation she needed a bit of ‘karma’?

highmarkingsnowbile · 25/05/2020 00:09

Karma. Fucking hell. People actually believe that kind of shit.

ffsgivemeausername · 25/05/2020 00:43

Vague rule 😂😂😂

36,793 deaths. Keep at it guys. Keep your noses out.

HeddaGarbled · 25/05/2020 00:52

Ah well, at least they didn’t go to Barrow-in-Furness.
