To think the current rainbow trend is NOT erasing LGBT?

Just seen a tiktok video where a lesbian is saying the pride flag belongs to lgbt and that if a child accidently draws a rainbow with 6 colours instead of 7 or someone hangs a pride flag up instead of drawing a curved rainbow then it’s stealing their culture and erasing them.

I’ve only seen one or two pride flags hung up in places where I’m fairly sure they’re signalling nhs support rather than lgbt support. Most of the time it’s actual rainbows. Can’t say I’ve counted the colours to make sure the poor kids have done all 7!

Yes, agree. I hated suddenly not being able to use any kind of rainbow colours or motif without being perceived as Making A Statement that I really wasn't.

LeopardPrintTits · 25/05/2020 14:27

YABU and homophobic. The pride flags are different from rainbow flags but they have been used by the public anyway. They’ve also been essentially encouraged by the Conservative government who already don’t care about LGBTQ+ rights and some are even homophobic themselves. Just think - if the NHS had started using poppies or something similar, there’d be a national outcry!

Mucklowe · 25/05/2020 14:32

The only thing threatening LGBT at the moment is the movement's dogged insistence on centring the T at the expense of the LG and B. Stifling debate and encouraging a violent trans rights agenda is putting our cause back decades. It's really sad to see.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 25/05/2020 14:39

I don't know anyone who's genuinely bothered by this.

I'm bi and work for the NHS so when I see rainbows in windows it's like "aww, nice". It also reminds me of a Pride march and makes me smile, we won't get any marches this year so it's nice to see the flags being used. If I see someone with a Pride flag I assume they're either LGBT or have been to Pride to have the flag, but it's certainly not exclusive nor is it offensive for anyone else to fly the flag, unless they're generally homophobic in which case they've got bigger issues than what flag they fly.

Major yikes from everyone saying "I'm glad they've been taken back from the LGBT community" though. No one's taken anything from anyone.

SpencerReidsMistress · 25/05/2020 14:47

News to me. Rainbows represent pride and I though that's why it's being used for the NHS. Pride in our NHS.

That is gross Ruffle I agree. Pride has turned into a male fetish exhibition. We steer clear nowadays.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 25/05/2020 16:03

Try telling that to George, Zippy and Bungle ...

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 25/05/2020 16:34

They stole it off Zippy! Let the puppets have it back!!!

But let’s face it no one owns rainbows, they happen naturally.

HeckyPeck · 25/05/2020 18:25

Exactly! This kind of attitude is what people I have seen have been reacting to. People gleefully saying they’ve taken rainbows back. Then an LGBTQ person reacts and the same person then tells them to stop whining and that no one owns rainbows 🙄

HeckyPeck · 25/05/2020 18:29

Why would you care what other people thought if you had a t-shirt with a rainbow on? The only people who would react negatively would be homophobic people and you really shouldn’t care what they think.

Sorry WHAT?!
Just scrolling through and happened to se this from
01justasking111 (sorry I don't know hiw to quote)

"In Wales if you asked people what the rainbow meant to them it would be the bible or leprechauns in most cases. It really is a city centric thing that it has been adopted by LGBT."

What on earth makes you think that? Rainbows for LGBT has been well known since was a teen (at least!) in very rural North Wales in the 90s. Even my sheltered nan knew what it meant.
Now I live in Cardiff... (yep we even have cities!!) Well I don't need to go on, there is a ton of LGBT stuff in Cardiff including a huge Pride event every year.
Genuinely I am curious as to where you are basing your assumptions on?

Lordfrontpaw · 25/05/2020 19:37

LGB - T didn’t rock up until, what the mid-90s?Stonewall created their T advisory group in 2015. Trans flag isn’t the rainbow.

Bibijayne · 25/05/2020 20:07

If you're religiously inclined, the rainbow was a sign after the great flood (Noah) that God would never again flood the earth because he was pissed an people. A sign of hope after trauma.

I always thought a rainbow could be anyones.

(Not religious, just loved the Noah's Ark story in primary school!)

Bibijayne · 25/05/2020 20:11

I'm Bi, I have various Pride items, but I also just have bright rainbow stuff around because my kid loves rainbows.

I don't understand people who cannot see that a natural phenomenon (especially a pretty one) can't be adopted as a symbol for many different things.

Bibijayne · 25/05/2020 20:13

I think @DontGoJasonWaterfalls has summarised it best. Plus, what an epic user name!

SpilltheTea · 25/05/2020 20:14

No one owns the fucking rainbow. They should have made it unique if they're going to get upset everytime they see colours.

VashtaNerada · 25/05/2020 22:16

I think saying all the time you are special and different only highlights that no one cares and to shut up Who are you referring to? NHS workers or LGBT people? Either would be completely offensive tbh.
No one owns the fucking rainbow. They should have made it unique if they're going to get upset everytime they see colours.
I think we’re talking about two separate things on this thread: a generic rainbow like you see in the sky (which is obviously not ‘owned’ by anyone), and the Pride Rainbow flag which is a unique piece of design to demonstrate a commitment to LGB(T) equality. It’s obviously fine to use the first one any way you want, but a bit weird to use the second one to promote a different cause entirely.

VashtaNerada · 25/05/2020 22:17

Sorry, should have tagged @SpilltheTea & @Wheninrometoday

Cornana · 25/05/2020 22:23

Lesbian here, couldn’t give a shit about the rainbow. The only people I know who use it are my friends who shove it in their windows and do my head in with all these different micro labels and made up pronouns. I have many gay friends, have seen the TikTok videos of people dramatically brandishing flags and fake crying and honestly I would hate if people think this is what the entire gay community thinks. ‘We’ are not a giant monolith, and often the main views you see in the media are the more extreme ones, ie, in this case “no one else can use a rainbow.”

Cornana · 25/05/2020 22:26

Someone else above has called LGBT a male fetish exhibition- not far off these days. Many people distance themselves now due to the political side that goes from people like me who just want to be gay in peace and then the other side which is where it gets turned into a weird fetish/identity politics mix.

Stripesgalore · 25/05/2020 22:27

The LGBT+ flag has now changed to include black, brown and some kind of triangle.

So a rainbow flag is not LGBT anymore.

user127819 · 25/05/2020 22:43

Have we really become so petty and childish a society that people throw tantrums over children "stealing" their logos?

driverkatie552 · 14/06/2020 22:18

As a proud member of the lgbt plus community I'm not in the least be bothered whether a rainbow has six seven or eight colours but I can understand some who say it's a representation of our history but the pride flag is square with rainbow colours it's not rainbow shaped it never has been I think it has something to do with the number of colours and the new pride flag is different now anyway
