To think the current rainbow trend is NOT erasing LGBT?

Just seen a tiktok video where a lesbian is saying the pride flag belongs to lgbt and that if a child accidently draws a rainbow with 6 colours instead of 7 or someone hangs a pride flag up instead of drawing a curved rainbow then it’s stealing their culture and erasing them.

I’ve only seen one or two pride flags hung up in places where I’m fairly sure they’re signalling nhs support rather than lgbt support. Most of the time it’s actual rainbows. Can’t say I’ve counted the colours to make sure the poor kids have done all 7!

I think Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz has full ownership

VashtaNerada · 25/05/2020 09:24

Nobody owns the rainbow but I must admit I would chuckle if I saw someone put up the flag thinking it’s in support of the NHS. The flag itself is clearly an LGBT symbol. An actual rainbow however is another story.

FortunesFavour · 25/05/2020 09:26

Leprechauns all the way here. But no skin off the chief Leprechaun’s nose if the NHS, LGBTQ, Bungle George and Zippy plus assorted others want to use the symbol too.

LolaSmiles · 25/05/2020 09:27

Someone call Noah, he wants his rainbow back.

Seriously though, nobody owns a rainbow. Are they going to go after the Little Bird children's clothing line for stealing 'their' rainbow too?

FizzyGreenWater · 25/05/2020 09:28

Don’t forget Greenpeace- another rainbow stealer to add to the list 🌈😁

drspouse · 25/05/2020 09:31

I'm really pleased to be able to tell the DCs "that's to celebrate the doctors and nurses" because a) they see no reason why men who want to marry men/women who want to marry women are "special" so why would they need a flag, it's just normal and b) I'm not telling them that men who think they can become women are getting a huge flag to themselves for doing sod all when doctors and nurses work bloody hard and don't get one.
So they are all now officially NHS flags in our house.

MadameJosephine · 25/05/2020 09:43

A rainbow is just a rainbow, it can mean many things or nothing at all

Reminds me of a conversation I had last week with a religious colleague (NHS) who said she wished they’d picked a different symbol because the rainbow was ‘a gay thing’ and she didn’t really want to be associated with that Hmm

VashtaNerada · 25/05/2020 09:53

why would they need a flag Seriously? You don’t know why LGBT people might need a symbol of equality? That sounds a bit like “I don’t see colour” to me Confused
I tell my children that we all different and that’s fine but I also tell them about the challenges that some groups of people are more likely to encounter than others.

VashtaNerada · 25/05/2020 09:56

Just googled ‘rainbow flag’ to check I’m not going mad! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_flag_(LGBT)
It’s obviously a different conversation when we’re talking about actual rainbows. My DC have drawn a rainbow which is in our front window and that’s a general symbol of hope during lockdown, not specific to LGBT.

Antibles · 25/05/2020 09:57

What kind of lesbian was this? The biological female kind or the other...?

Lordfrontpaw · 25/05/2020 10:00

This was back in the day when the rainbow flag was LGB. That was created on the late 70s.

VashtaNerada · 25/05/2020 10:07

Exactly! The Greenpeace rainbow is different to the LGB one (you’re right, the trans one is different). I meant it would be funny if someone used the actual LGB one thinking it means ‘support NHS’ Grin

FortunesFavour · 25/05/2020 10:29

Oh c’mon, to most people a rainbow is a rainbow, whether in an arc or just the colours on a flag. I wouldn’t snigger at someone putting up a rainbow flag with the “wrong” sequence because a) I’ve got better things to do and b) a rainbow is a rainbow even if on a flag and even if you attribute there being a special meaning to 7 or 5 or 9 stripes or whatever. No single group has the rights over ownership of the symbol and it’s a daft thing to squabble over.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/05/2020 10:31

It’s funny that they are squabbling over it. Almost as funny as when some bright spark announced that the suffragettes has stolen their colours.

startrek90 · 25/05/2020 11:11

I am not sure its just the NHS though. I don't live in the UK but I see lots of rainbows painted/drawn by children. I think it just means hope, that there will be a brighter tomorrow. No one owns a rainbow and a rainbow doesn't mean the same thing to every person. That's the issue with symbols, they can mean many things to different people..

anon1292 · 25/05/2020 12:42

I think it's an injustice to both NHS workers and gay people. Frankly, a blue heart would be better, but don't you think it's weird how a right-wing Prime Minister would try to erase LGBT history? People died for both rainbows, 7 striped curved rainbows are for the NHS, 6 striped pride flags 🏳️‍🌈 are NOT and vice-versa. Everybody gets fucked over, but we're too far down the rabbit hole at this point.

Lordfrontpaw · 25/05/2020 12:47

(Someone died on the Rainbow warrior too)

Curiositykilledthecat113 · 25/05/2020 12:57

JacobReesMogadishu If you don’t think the LGBT population feel this way then why start a thread about it? You must’ve known where it was going to go unless you’re wilfully ignorant.

Also with a name like Jacob Rees Mogg I wouldn’t be surprised if you were anti LGBT

Gingerkittykat · 25/05/2020 13:14

b) I'm not telling them that men who think they can become women are getting a huge flag to themselves for doing sod all when doctors and nurses work bloody hard and don't get one

The Trans flag is not a rainbow.

I don't understand the better in than out t-shirt, I always thought that phrase referred to farts!

I remember at the start of this crisis when one lovely poster was very gleeful that society was taking the rainbow back from the nasty gays and said that she was glad Christians could fly it again!

To think the current rainbow trend is NOT erasing LGBT?
drspouse · 25/05/2020 13:26

@ginger the "pride" flag has been appropriated and is now not "allowed" to stand just for same sex attraction but has to stand for "my right to be a woman transcends your rights to same sex wards despite me having all my tackle".
When there's an actual lesbian and gay flag up I'll explain to my DCs that some horrible people think it's all right to hit a boy for kissing another boy but we don't think that so the hospital flies this flag.
Until then they are aware we are drawing rainbows to show we think doctors and nurses are important.

BigGee · 25/05/2020 13:51

Trying to claim you're the only people in the world allowed to use an image of a natural phenomenon in a graphic way is insane. I can imagine the Pride flag being copyrighted and having those legal protections, but a generic rainbow...get over yourselves.

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/05/2020 13:53

In the future LGBT+ will just be seen as normal - they won’t need flags. A rainbow should just mean a rainbow!

justasking111 · 25/05/2020 14:01

In Wales if you asked people what the rainbow meant to them it would be the bible or leprechauns in most cases. It really is a city centric thing that it has been adopted by LGBT.

mrsbyers · 25/05/2020 14:14

I’m glad it’s associated with something else now , I love rainbows and didn’t like the fact they ‘belonged’ to the ‘community’
