To think the current rainbow trend is NOT erasing LGBT?

Just seen a tiktok video where a lesbian is saying the pride flag belongs to lgbt and that if a child accidently draws a rainbow with 6 colours instead of 7 or someone hangs a pride flag up instead of drawing a curved rainbow then it’s stealing their culture and erasing them.

I’ve only seen one or two pride flags hung up in places where I’m fairly sure they’re signalling nhs support rather than lgbt support. Most of the time it’s actual rainbows. Can’t say I’ve counted the colours to make sure the poor kids have done all 7!

They are like cats

toinfinityandlockdown · 24/05/2020 21:44

Lol... Should Christiana claim LGBT flags are erasing Noah? (I'm not...that would be ridiculous, in case that isn't obvious).

Thisismytimetoshine · 24/05/2020 21:45

It doesn't matter what it may represent to some people, it's a fucking rainbow. Get over yourselves.

EachDubh · 24/05/2020 21:48

No one owns a rainbow, but if a group was to have more rights to it would be kids, end of, kids and rainbows predate lgbt and rainbows. Rainbows, to me, have always been about about jope, magic and chance for a brighter future and that is all they mean to me symbolically. It's fine for others to see it dufferently it's not okay for others to make a claim on what isn't theirs.

choosesoap · 24/05/2020 21:50

i wasnt bothered by the flag thing until I saw someone out wearing the nhs cycle tshirt with rainbows on the arms and the phrase nhs "better in than out" .. which feels like the company behind this has really been quite blind to how that comes across, or possibly purposefully having a dig but I hope not... Confused

JacobReesMogadishu · 24/05/2020 21:51

I’ve just had to do the whole Richard of York thing to see how many colours are actually in a rainbow.

Yes, I agree I’m sure most LGBT+ people aren’t bothered. It just slightly winds me up that there’s always some self absorbed person who even in the midst of a global pandemic and much death is determined to play the victim.

This really really annoys me. For one, the rainbow is not a symbol for the LBGTQ community. A rectangular flag with rainbow-coloured stripes is. No one asked the rest of the world if that was ok, because it is ok, it's not an actual rainbow, which nobody can even begin to claim ownership over. To say that children may not draw rainbows or display rainbows because they are stealing the culture of the lesbians?! What even is lesbian culture? Here was me thinking that each and every lesbian has their own cultural identity along with being a lesbian? Much like every other person in the world does, LGBTQ/S? Do all lesbians have to drop their previous culture upon becoming a lesbian and adopt the Culture of the Lesbian? Good grief, some people do themselves no favours at all. Who on earth can be cross at a child's picture of a rainbow?! Apart from another poster on here a couple of months ago who saw a child's picture of a rainbow in the window as a signal to all men to suddenly turn into predatory paedophiles who would attack women and children in their homes.

GreenGlassVase · 24/05/2020 21:54

I actually mentioned to husband today, how pleased I was that rainbows weren’t gay anymore.
Now you can happily see them on t shirts, kids clothes, without any bloody irritating political connotations

toinfinityandlockdown · 24/05/2020 21:56

I think it's probably a mistake to take anything that one person with any subset of society says and imply it represents everyone within said subset of the population. It's just a straw man to get outraged about.

justasking111 · 24/05/2020 22:03

Hospices adopted the sunflower, did it belong to them no. A cancer charity the daffodil, did the welsh kick off no.

Nature is wonderful I always say to the children when I see a rainbow, look there is treasure at the end of it.

SquashedSpring · 24/05/2020 22:09

Well I heard that the leprechauns nabbed the rainbow off Iris, so they're really not in a position to complain.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 24/05/2020 22:11

Yanbu...at all

GinWithRosie · 24/05/2020 22:12

I'm a child of the 70s...to me any culture surrounding rainbows involves Zippy, George, Bungle, Rod, Jane and Freddy 🤷‍♀️ Fairly certain these characters cover ALL communities 👍

SoberCurious · 24/05/2020 22:15

You can't own the fucking rainbow! Ffs. Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/05/2020 22:16

Huh?

DD has a shit ton of rainbow clothes. Unicorns owned them as well you know. And unicorns are notoriously apolitical.

darwin301 · 24/05/2020 22:25

Initially I wasn't bothered about this. Rainbows have meant hope for centuries so having it as a symbol during these times offers some comfort.

However, I do feel some people are taking it too far. For example, some people are flying literal pride flags in support for the NHS, people who are homophobic and have claimed to be offended by the pride flag but now seemingly have no problem with it. Some companies are literally painting NHS over their pride buses.

This just feels like erasure and an attempt at co opting a symbol of a still marginalised community.

Elsiebear90 · 24/05/2020 23:04

Actual rainbows or drawings of rainbows of course don’t belong to anyone, but rainbow flags have been a symbol of LGBT acceptance across the world for over 40 years, so while I as a lesbian nhs worker have no issue with people drawing rainbows or what not, I do take issue with people using pride flags to “support the nhs” as they’re using what is a universal and well known flag and symbol of acceptance for LGBT people for something completely different. Like get a flag with a picture of a rainbow on or an nhs logo or something, don’t use a pride flag when it’s not for gay pride, especially when you’d have an issue with it being used for gay pride in the first place. I do feel like it’s an attempt to “rebrand” the pride flag as something more “palatable” by some.

JacobReesMogadishu · 24/05/2020 23:41

I can certainly see why if you felt someone was trying to rebrand the pride flag into something more palatable (for them) that would be upsetting.

I’ve seen one pride flag on a farm yard gate. Not sure if they’re gay and it’s the only thing they had to hand/couldn’t be arsed to buy a rainbow banner, or if they have no idea what it is and it was the first thing which came up on amazon (which it is if you search for rainbow flag), or if they realised it was a pride flag but just assumed it didn’t matter. Or if they knew it was a pride flag and thought they’d try and reclaim it. I’d like to think not the latter.

How utterly ridiculous! Rainbows belong to nature.

Also. The use of a rainbow is supposed to illustrate an all inclusive community. Hardly inclusive to rant that rainbows "belong" to LGBT only.

LEELULUMPKIN · 24/05/2020 23:43

There was a thread on here about this very topic when this all first kicked off.

A poster said that they found it "triggering" and that they wanted "their" rainbow back.

I seem to remember she got tore a new one sharpish.

Hagisonthehill · 24/05/2020 23:53

Pride is cancelled this year so companies are selling their stock on the basis that most people don't know the difference between a 6 and 7 stripe rainbow.

shamelesschocaholic · 24/05/2020 23:58

I think this is just a twat shouting for sake of it. I was talking to my 18 year old about this yesterday (he’s gay) and found it hysterical. Shame though as we were looking forward to his first pride this month (and he could have a drink). Will have to wait for next year!!

Excited101 · 25/05/2020 00:29

I miss when rainbows were just rainbows, I’m all for PRIDE and supporting the NHS but I’m put off having huge rainbows on things in case people think I’m being political.

caribooshriek · 25/05/2020 00:43

A rainbow belongs to everyone.
