AIBU?

Not to let 2 year old ds watch Peppa pig?

I have Netflix and there’s big images of Peppa pig and he keeps asking to watch it but I’ve only heard bad things about it. Is it really that bad ? I’m torn because I personally think I’d hate sitting through it and have heard it’s pretty bad animation and Peppa shows unpleasant behavior with a positive resolution, we currently watch things like puffin rock etc...

Do you remember back in the day those parents who wouldn’t let their family watch channel 4 and ITV because it was too rough? And the kids of those families who grew up missing out on relatable convos in school and too embarrassed to admit their mum was a raging snob who wouldn’t let them watch?

Just to let you know those kids haven’t grown up to be particularly proper or went on to rule the world. They just felt they missed out and thought their mum was a bit of a wally.

Masha and the Bears is adorable. I think Masha is quite different from Peppa, though.

Bing is a butterfly murderer. That episode was dark. Even for Thomas Cromwell.

I let my DS watch Peppa back in the day and all of us love it to this day as well as Ben & Holly.

Then again my Mum & Dad let me watch Hammer House of Horror's years before other kids were allowed to watch it so take from that what you will.

Brian Blessed voices Grampy Rabbit the lighthouse keeper. That’s not just good, that’s perfection.

I love puffin rock. Sadly DS has gone off it. We like gentle shows too - no rude behaviour or fighting. DS enjoys:

Hey Duggee
Kazoops
True Rainbow kingdom
Hello ninja
Daniel tiger

I've just realised Peppa is older than ds1! Maybe my DC just never got into it as I don't really remember it being on. Ds 2 watched it occasionally but not really.

Totally anecdotal but...
Some of my nieces and nephews are allowed to watch Peppa/Bing.
Some aren't because they "model bad behaviour"
The ones who are peppa addicts are by far the best behaved.

Never understood the hate towards Peppa Pig. I quite enjoy watching it and there are some jokes for adults which I appreciate (not adult jokes of course!). I also like Ben and Holly which unfortunately DS isn't bothered about.
DS went through a massive Blaze and the Monster Machines phase and the words he learnt through that were amazing! Only useful if he fancies a career in mechanical engineering though.

But now I much prefer anything CBeebies. Hey Duggee is, of course, the king.

Oh my goodness to the poster who said ‘bing is black’ do you actually think that bing hits a diversity target? Thank heavens for waffle the dog, his brown

My ds got more of an attitude watching Pingu than he has anything else. Peppa is pretty tame in comparison.

He's a bunny rabbit that lives with an orange creature called flop. His friends are a black and white panda. An elephant and a rabbit.

Reasons bing annoys me.

He stole a lolly
He snuck in the back of the shop
He poured too many bubbles in the bath
He threw his dad's phone in the bin
He chooses a toy then demands the other toy
He was rude at a friend's house about pasta being mixed up.
He said the banana was poo putting it into the blender.
He wet himself instead of going to the toilet.
He was rude to the Dr because he couldn't get the sticker he wanted.

I'm not actually bothered in reality lol!!!!

But who decided to make a character that kids adore make so many bad choices and be rude. They just end up mimicking his stupid behaviour Grin

OP it's a pretend pink cartoon pig, not Reservoir Dogs.

Bit harsh, @bringonspring?

Isn't the point that a child might like to think 'oh, Bing is like me!' rather than anyone ticking boxes about diversity?

My DD went through a stage of really wanting to believe that she could find two mummies in her favourite books and cartoons and she was overjoyed whenever there was anything vaguely resembling that set-up. For toddlers it's not about 'oooh, diversity,' just about wanting to see something they can relate to.

FWIW I always assumed Amma and Sula are intended to be black, but maybe a child wouldn't pick that up, dunno.

Peppa is banned around here. Kids are so mouthy if they are allowed to watch it, they copy her way of talking which is basically just being rude and giving attitude towards adults. That pig needs a school trip to the butchers.

Report
Bringonspring · 23/05/2020 15:27

I don’t know any children that look at a black rabbit and think it’s like me! If you want to improve diversity then have a range of human characters.

Miss Rabbit rocks on Peppa. All my kids took from it was that it fun to jump in muddy puddles with boots on.

Yes!
I was never allowed to watch Tiswas as a child, but Swapshop was fine 😏
I used to always angle for sleepovers at my best friend’s house just so that we could watch it.
Years later I was banned from watching Grange Hill.
It was horrible not being able to join in with conversations at school, even the teachers would start discussions on topics covered on Grange Hill.
I am in my 50s now and still resent my mother for her ridiculousness.😆

@nameisthegame.
You need to chill a bit, well done for leaving abusive ex. 💐 Peppa pig is fine. Many children I have looked after over the years have loved it. It's not going to turn your child into a horrible brat. It's five minutes.
If your child copies something don't like you just explain that "Peppa says that, we don't because it isn't kind/funny/nice.
@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz. You Rock !! 🍷😂
