AIBU?

Not to let 2 year old ds watch Peppa pig?

I have Netflix and there’s big images of Peppa pig and he keeps asking to watch it but I’ve only heard bad things about it. Is it really that bad ? I’m torn because I personally think I’d hate sitting through it and have heard it’s pretty bad animation and Peppa shows unpleasant behavior with a positive resolution, we currently watch things like puffin rock etc...

My youngest is now nine and we haven't watch Peppa Pig for years.

However we do still say to each other "it is a little bit funny" when someone is being grumpy and saying "it's not funny". It's a useful phrase for diffusing & turning a mood around.

And we often snort at each other PP style.

Don't let her watch it OP Grin

It's awful. They all are.

Peppa is fatphobic towards Daddy Pig and thoroughly nasty about Edmund Elephant. But then, it takes about five minutes to interpret Ben and Holly as thinly-veiled racism/class warfare. Bing is an annoying little shit and Flop is clearly abusing the valium. The Tellytubbies are (according to an American hate preacher) sanctioning the gay lifestyle because one of them has a handbag (gay!), is purple (gayer!) and wears a triangle on his head (the gayest!).

So really, there's little to be said about any of them.

On the plus side, once your child has watched 8 hours straight, you'll be so close to insanity from the squeaky voices and the jingles that you'll just shake quietly in a corner, wondering when the nice people with the white coats will come to take you away.

I like Peppa Pig (especially the sweet little sprout on a Christmas tree episode). However, I was less than impressed about another cartoon that DD(9) downloaded somehow the other week called Rick and Morty. That was definitely not even vaguely suitable for her age group!

I like Peppa except for the fat shaming. It's good on some things, nature, recycling, they eat a lot of veg :-) My fave for positive behaviour role modelling is Sesame Street and Elmo's World.

In seriousness (and in addition to Sarah and Duck which, obviously, I love), have you come across Jojo and Gran Gran? It's on Iplayer, quite recently, and it's really charming.

Hahaha Rick and Morty is for adults, probably too adult for a lot of adults!

I've never heard anyone say anything negative about Peppa Pig. We all like it.

Wow vipers keep viping on AIBU over a kid’s show, I heard bad things so came and asked my life’s hard enough without making a rod for my own back with ds.

Just stick CBeebies on and try blocking out the sound in your mind. No adverts so your bank balance will thank you for it.

At 2 my little one loved Hey Duggee fortunately. Octonauts and Go Jetters are good too. Also on iplayer they have all the specials (Pantomines, ballets and shakepeares) which are really good and definitely more than one cup of tea long whioch is a bonus for uninterrupted me time.

Ben and Holly as thinly-veiled racism/class warfare

Oh, Ben and Holly is the worst. "I'm an elf"...so can only do elf things...it's absolutely terrible messaging for childen.

@underneaththeash yeah rick and Mortey is definitely not suitable! Adventure time, Steven universe and shera would be great shows to watch

Haven't read the whole thread, but i detest Peppa. Spoiled brat and a terrible cartoon. I didnt let my DS watch but his father did, DS is now 6 and knows mummy doesn't like peppa, but couldn't keep him away from it forever. I steer his choices and imagination towards other programmes I rather him watch.

Another take on it, my DS watch "nightmare before christmas" from the age of aprox 3, my friends DS is 7 and he would freak out watching such a film.

YANBU to not let your DS watch anything you deem unsuitable

I love Peppa Pig. The soft play one is genuinely funny.

I mean, my youngest can be a bit bratty but I think that’s just her, not the cartoon!

Please save your post OP as in a couple of years time when your child is influenced by all his school friends and you can’t control influences you will reflect why you worries about a cartoon pig

Octonauts actually genuinely pisses me off because it's really sexist.

@Escapetab - TBF I think my DD is oblivious to the messaging, but it gets on my nerves. Likewise Nanny Plum's 'a fairy must be pretty, hair lovely, blah blah blah'.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz you forgot to mention the crystal meth Grin

Seriously. It's a tv show for kids. My 2 were slightly too old for peppa, but watched a lot of Horrid Henry which seemed to be the Peppa Pig of its day. We used to watch it and occasionally chat about not wanting to be as 'horrid' as Henry, or as 'perfect' as Peter. Or the fact that the parents have made the boys the way they are and neither is as horrid or as perfect as their name suggests.

My kids have been fine watching it.

It is popular.

Bing on the other hand is a negative program but my son loves it. Just my opinion. Bing is that kid that irritates everyone else. He's that kid that the other parents complain about. (why doesn't flop teach him to be less rude, selfish and whingey) lol only a program.

Let him watch Peppa pig!

Peppa is far preferable to that insufferable little shit Bing.

My almost two year old belly laughs all the way through Masha and the bear... if you have issues with Peppa being a bad influence, I don't recommend Masha 😆

Oh, also Yakka Dee on iplayer is great - it teaches words, my little one loves that too

I like Bing. Not all children have a mother at home so he gives them some representation. He's also black.

Are you serious Confused Can't you just watch it and judge for yourself fgs ?? It's a popular cartoon about a family of pigs, what's the worst that can happen ?

Report
antipodalpizza · 23/05/2020 15:16

There are worse things he could be watching - Scottish Peppa Pig for example.
