when it is used as punctuation or in place of "Thank you"?

For context, a friend send me a text to ask me a favour, we exchange a few replies and I gradually agree. She finishes off with 👍🏼 and does not mention please or thank you in any of her replies.

I don't know what the second emoji is

nitgel · 23/05/2020 13:15

i had the praying pic, the second looks like an oven grill Grin

don't 🏼 me man

thatcarolebaskinbitch · 23/05/2020 13:18

Ugh yes my DM does this all the time!! I will send her a picture of a cake I've made or something and I just get 👍🏻 in return, it really annoys me.

nitgel · 23/05/2020 13:18

hate not had

Spillinteas · 23/05/2020 13:18

Depends what the favour was.

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2020 13:18

I don't know what the second emoji is either. On nitgels post there is a teeny tiny blank square box between the words 'dont' and 'me'.

But I am on my laptop.

2toe · 23/05/2020 13:18

I cannot stand it, I read it as “I can’t really be bothered talking to you, I have better things to do” or as a passive aggressive “I will acknowledge this but I don’t really like you”.
I have asked friends who say I’m overthinking it Shock

Spillinteas · 23/05/2020 13:20

For example -

‘Can you grab a pint of milk do I can brew up when you get here?’

Could merit a 👍 if you agree.

‘Can you give me a kidney?’

Would probably merit a bit more gratitude Grin

NotKeenOnSwede · 23/05/2020 13:22

I hate it, it's a kick in the teeth

JoesExotic · 23/05/2020 13:22

I agree, it's a conversation stopper.

allthedamnvampires · 23/05/2020 13:23

It's rude

Nicolastuffedone · 23/05/2020 13:24

I use the 👍 sometimes I’m busy, if I type a response, I get another text....on and on. I use it to acknowledge I’ve read it, but I don’t have time to enter into back and forth texting

Somanysocks · 23/05/2020 13:25

But what does a blank pink square actually mean?

Kljnmw3459 · 23/05/2020 13:25

Yes it's definitely a conversation stopper. My beloved dsis and dm do it and I take it as a sign that they're not interested in receiving any further messages for now.

nitgel · 23/05/2020 13:25

so what is the second one?

Hingeandbracket · 23/05/2020 13:27

No

xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:28

Why so @Spillinteas? She is able to write long sentences and specific instructions about what she's like me to do for her and why she can't/ won't do it herself but can't manage a thank you?

OP posts:
DieSchottin93 · 23/05/2020 13:29

I think the second one is just the skin tone of the emoji that OP has chosen? Could be wrong though.

xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:29

Those asking what emoji it is, it's the thumbs up.

Im

OP posts:
Potatobug · 23/05/2020 13:30

It means thumbs up. It means that’s fine, okay. It is not rude at all. It is not the middle finger. It is literally a thumb up.

xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:30

Is this 👍🏼 not showing as thumbs up then?

OP posts:
xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:32

I know what it means potato, which is why I don't like it instead of "Thank you".

OP posts:
Carrie7469 · 23/05/2020 13:32

It's showing as a thumbs up and a pink square

MulticolourMophead · 23/05/2020 13:32

I don't know what that pink square is, either. In fact, I've just scrolled through the emojis on my phone and I can't even find it.

xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:34

Okay I'll change colour. 👍 Is that any better? It shows up fine on my phone.
