Does anybody else find 👍🏼 annoying...

when it is used as punctuation or in place of "Thank you"?

For context, a friend send me a text to ask me a favour, we exchange a few replies and I gradually agree. She finishes off with 👍🏼 and does not mention please or thank you in any of her replies.

I use it. Didn't mean to be rude sorryBlush

ShirleyB25 · 23/05/2020 14:05

Jeepers !! There are some very easily offended people in this world. It would never even occur to get het up and genuinely annoyed about this.

Extraordinary.

I think there are some posters who have not read the first post or the full thread.

I have already explained that a friend sends me a long winded text about getting me to do something for her without saying please or thank you at any point and after a few exchanges and only after I agree I can have a look for her, she replies with a thumbs up instead of saying thank you.

It's the lack of manners that bothers me.

Hate it but don't really know why! A friend uses it all the time and I think it is when she has found out all the info she wants and has no use for me anymore. I've started doing it back to her........but then I am very petty.

There are some people who easily misunderstand by not RTFT.

From someone who is offended by a thumbs up emoji

xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:10

BTW I am not offended by thumbs up but the opportunistic behaviour without even saying please or thank you!

I don’t understand why people get annoyed with texting back and forth. I find it easier than making time for verbal phone calls as you can reply in your own time.

IntoTheUnknown89 · 23/05/2020 14:11

Oh Blush I use this frequently!!

TrickyKid · 23/05/2020 14:11

I can't see the pink square, just thumb's up.
I use it if I don't want to get into a conversation or to acknowledge I've received a message but no further conversation is required.

Whatnext2018 · 23/05/2020 14:11

Hate it! It feels ignorant and as though to finish the conversation..so rude

xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:12

anniegun it was a bold fail quoting a pp.

Oh, and I have already said that I am NOT offended by the emoji but the lack of manners. I have said this several times but some people just haven't bothered to RTFT.

OP posts:
Wauden · 23/05/2020 14:12

Sorry, OP, I have read more of your post.
Agreed, the thumb's up is no substitute for please or thank you.
It would really annoy me Angry too

lilgreen · 23/05/2020 14:13

Why do people not want to get into a conversation? I’m presuming you are friends with the person texting?

xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:14

lilgreen. The onus is on her to call me surely if she wants something from me?

OP posts:
Euclid · 23/05/2020 14:19

I think that texting to ask a favour is in itself rude. If I wanted to ask a favour I would make a telephone call to the other person. This is much more polite and would enable me to thank him/her at the same time. As texts are gradually replacing conversations for so many people, good manners will inevitably disappear.

SixesAndEights · 23/05/2020 14:20

Oh god, it really annoys me, but I know I'm being unreasonable so just sigh, roll my eyes to myself and force myself to let it go!

Grin
sawollya · 23/05/2020 14:20

I thought I was very polite but I did notice that when my cousin's wife (who I've never met) was on fb and offered to send me a photo of their son, I type a thumbsup as a 'yes, please do!'' then she stopped the conversation right there and the photo never came. I had had a nice conversation with her in the run up to that. So I was a bit............. where's this photo then?

I am a bit shocked that people think it's rude.

Worstyear2020 · 23/05/2020 14:21

I have been using it wrong, I always thought thumb up means "great!", I always say thank you in text.

IslandbreezeNZ · 23/05/2020 14:21

Ohhh I use that often to end a conversation Shock I see it as a casual fun way to say cool/sorted.

xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:21

Euclid, I think you're right about manners disappearing. I guess I'm just old fashioned but some people genuinely think that saying please and thank you only belong in primary school :(

OP posts:
xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:22

Or at least some the ones I have met anyway.
