Does anybody else find 👍🏼 annoying...

xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:12

when it is used as punctuation or in place of "Thank you"?

For context, a friend send me a text to ask me a favour, we exchange a few replies and I gradually agree. She finishes off with 👍🏼 and does not mention please or thank you in any of her replies.

I’d say thumbs up means ‘great’ too.

Redwinestillfine · 23/05/2020 14:23

Isn't the prayer emoji, as illustrated by your brown box supposed to be the one that means thank you? I would read 👍🙏 (let's see if I get the brown box of doom too) as 'fab thanks'

Durgasarrow · 23/05/2020 14:23

I don't think it's annoying at all. It just means "great job."

4Naan · 23/05/2020 14:23

I'd be much more annoyed if someone called me to ask a favour. A phonecall puts someone on the spot, if it's a message then you have time to think up an excuse if you want. I thought it was common knowledge the vast majority of people under the age of 40 loathe phone conversations.

lilgreen · 23/05/2020 14:24

Op that wasn’t directed at you but the posters saying they use the thumbs up when they don’t want to get into a text conversation.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/05/2020 14:24

I use it all the time

For me it means 'yep' or 'will do/acknowledge'

xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:24

@4Naan We are both over 40!

OP posts:
lilgreen · 23/05/2020 14:24

Praying means praying or hoping surely!

StayinginSummer · 23/05/2020 14:25

Not annoying.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 23/05/2020 14:25

I use it loads, doesn’t bother me in the slightest if people use it to reply to me Confused

xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:25

Oh sorry @lilgreen.

OP posts:
xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:26

Perhaps I should have written "Does anyone else find the lack of please and thank you annoying instead" in my title as that is really what it's about.

OP posts:
PafLeChien · 23/05/2020 14:27

not instead of thank you

but as a "i have seen your last message, I acknowledge it but we don't need to carry on talking but I am letting you know I have seen it"
it's much better than xxx

lilgreen · 23/05/2020 14:28

Yes op you’re right. I would type thank you but I do write all my texts out with correct spelling and grammar. My teens think it’s funny.

PafLeChien · 23/05/2020 14:28

I thought it was common knowledge the vast majority of people under the age of 40 loathe phone conversations. Confused

it really isn't it, just you I am afraid! Grin

IzzyGee · 23/05/2020 14:29

OP I share your sentiments. I also feel mildly rankled by people who say ‘cheers!’ in a situation that merits a thank you. I don’t want a toast I want a thank you for what I have done for you.

MsPepperPotts · 23/05/2020 14:31

Yeah it rude alright.
The fact that your friend sent you a long text asking for that favour rather than actually call you seems a bit rude as well.

lilgreen · 23/05/2020 14:45

What I hate more is when you post a photo or something to a WhatsApp group and you can see who’s read it and they don’t even acknowledge. What’s the point of a WhatsApp group?

SecondRow · 23/05/2020 14:47

OP would an emoji be okay if it was one that specifically means "thank you"?

I use the thumbs up for "yep, acknowledge/cool that's all sorted" when making arrangements.

For thank you some friends usually use a kissy emoji 😘

With my family we're not kissy types so would write "thanks, that's great" kind of thing.

WhenItIsOver · 23/05/2020 14:47

Not as annoying as when they don't show up and you have no idea what was there. Like now.

SecondRow · 23/05/2020 14:49

Oh and yes the praying hands 🙏 often used for both please and thank you I think?

nitgel · 23/05/2020 14:52

I was just reading that praying hands means hi five

xsquared · 23/05/2020 14:53

@Secondrow It is the lack of please and thank you that is the issue.

OP posts:
wildcherries · 23/05/2020 14:53

Yes! Complete conversation stopper. It really annoys me.

MrsNettle · 23/05/2020 15:00

I, like many pp, misunderstood your op and thought you have an issue with the use of 👍, not the lack of thank you 😳
Finally got it in your last post. Yes, YANBU
