Does anybody else find 👍🏼 annoying...

when it is used as punctuation or in place of "Thank you"?

For context, a friend send me a text to ask me a favour, we exchange a few replies and I gradually agree. She finishes off with 👍🏼 and does not mention please or thank you in any of her replies.

The second square is when you have chosen a skin tone so if I chose black a black square should show. I have no problem with a thumbs up emoji btw 👍🏾

Somanysocks · 23/05/2020 13:35

Google says it's skin tone, but why would your mother need that?

I am guessing we are not all seeing the same thing on here.

Allinadaystwerk · 23/05/2020 13:35

Black thumb = black square.. see?

MrsBlue4 · 23/05/2020 13:36

Agreed. It angers me when I get this reply 😂

xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:37

I don't mind the thumbs up, but I do when it is when it's used instead of saying thank you when they have written a long text asking something from you.

This thread is funny, it reminds me of my mother in law using the internet!! 😃😃😃
"What's that thing? Over there? Can you hear me?" 😃😃😃

Snooks1971 · 23/05/2020 13:38

The second emoji has disappeared now! It was there a minute ago in the thread title.

Carrie7469 · 23/05/2020 13:38

Oh I see, it's just a thumbs up.
I do this if I'm getting fed up with people messaging me and I want to shut down the conversation

Sparklingbrook · 23/05/2020 13:40

I use it when DB texts 'are you ready for a Facetime call?'. Is that rude?

lifestooshort123 · 23/05/2020 13:40

It works the other way though. If I ask my daughter if she can buy me so-and-so when she next shops she'll reply with a👍to show it's OK. I will then reply xxxx to say thank you. Praps we all develop code that works for us.

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/05/2020 13:41

Yes it drives me mad

Potatobug · 23/05/2020 13:41

Thumbs up doesn’t mean thank you. It means it’s fine, sorted, no worries. Maybe some people mean to use it as a thank you but it’s definitely not rude.

Concestor · 23/05/2020 13:42

I use it when what I really want to reply is "why are you bothering me with this inane shit? Please fuck off with your endless messages."

I think that 👍 is probably less offensive, no?

00100001 · 23/05/2020 13:43

How bizarre!

When the page first loads, it shows the coloured hand, and a few moments later, it changes the hand colour and adds a square Confused

xsquared · 23/05/2020 13:45

I use it when DB texts 'are you ready for a Facetime call?'. Is that rude?

@Sparklingbrook

I have said in several posts including the first one, that I didn't like it used as "Thank you" when they have written a long text on what they'd like me to do and replied again with another long text to say why they can't or won't do it themselves.

Sigh, I guess the real issue is I find the lack of please and thank you annoying when people ask you for a favour. Especially when it's opportunistic.

The lack of manners is what I find rude when you are asking someone for a favour

I don't mind it for informal things

Nosurveysneeded · 23/05/2020 13:48

Not seen it before. Is it a grill? What does that mean? I have used thumbs up but not instead of thank you.

MulticolourMophead · 23/05/2020 13:51

To answer your question, OP, I agree that a thumbs up is generally rude if you've sent a text as you've described.

There's a few reasons why I use a thumbs up, but in general, I do reply with "thank you", etc.

lilgreen · 23/05/2020 13:57

Better than being ignored I guess.

GrandAltogetherSo · 23/05/2020 14:01

I use it loads. I thought that’s what emoji’s were designed for?
I think I must have missed the memo with the link to the rule book on emoji etiquette.
