To use bar soap instead of liquid handsoap

Liquid handsoap is sold out completely, at every shop here (we live outside the UK).
Bar soap is still widely available though for the same price as it was before (unfortunately that doesn't apply to liquid handsanitizer, this has become 3 times more expensive then it was before).

I still have enough handsoap left for about 2 weeks use, but I'm afraid there still won't be any available after we run out of our current supply. I was planning to buy bar soap to put by the sink in the toilet but DH thinks it's grim to use bar soap for washing hands after toilet use. He says we better buy shower gel and use that instead.
I'm thinking that won't do the cleansing job as good as bar soap.

AIBU to think it's fine to use bar soap in the toilet?

YABU : it's grim, use showergel

YANBU : don't worry, it's fine to use bar soap

We have started using bars of soap. We have noticed our skin isn't as dry since using it.
The only downside I'm finding is it leaves a real scum on the drain plugs (chrome) and husband has been using it in the shower so the shower door is also scummy now too. Takes more to clean it lol

If people must use liquid soap but want to cut down on plastics, then use Splosh.

And then buy the refills.

And then recycle the empty refill pouches

I wonder how many of you posting on here that you only use bar soap in the house, are using bar soap as a face wash as well?

OP posts:
YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/05/2020 14:15

I use bar soap as a face wash. Never used anything else.

Destroyedpeople · 22/05/2020 14:16

I never wash my face with anything but cold or slightly warm water. Honestly all this stuff that we women are persuaded that we need is mostly clever marketing.

CoachBombay · 22/05/2020 14:18

@Honeybee85 me! So much nicer, I also use a flannel/face cloth still for removing make-up. Think I'm stuck in a different era sometimes, but mainly it comes down to cost. Bars are like £1 for 3. Facecloths/flannels are washed and re-used after each use so no disposable wipes cost. I mean I only had DS in 2014 and I only had wet wipes for out and about or night changes, I used cotton wool and Luke warm water on him in the house for changes.

YANBU

Bar soap is fine

My hands at least feel cleaner than after using liquid soap, half of which goes down the plug hole anyway!

TurquoiseDress · 22/05/2020 14:20

My favourite is Dove! Esp the cocoa one mmmm

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 14:23

@CoachBombay

Can you remove your make up entirely with 1 wash with flannel plus soap?

I double cleanse with oil plus facewash but even after this there's still sometimes eyeshadow or mascara on my face after showering. It's costly indeed and inconvenient when I am travelling to bring oil cleaner, facewash and showergel.

I had to switch to bar soap a couple of months ago because of the state my hands were in - I have been working with people unable to understand social distancing throughout the last three months and washing my hands three or four times every hour minimum. I have my own bars of soap in my own name labelled travel boxes by each sink at work.

Bar soap is kinder to skin (my skin was properly damaged by such freuent washing with liquid soap) and also often actually better.

The viruses and bacteria can't survive on the soap bar between uses.

Deadringer · 22/05/2020 14:24

I used to use face wash but now i usually just rinse my face with warm water in the shower. Once or twice a week i lather it with soap but i wouldn't do that every day as i have dry skin.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/05/2020 14:26

I haven't worn makeup for 25 years :).

AllIMissNowIsTheSea · 22/05/2020 14:28

Honeybee85 I haven't used anything but plain ordinary tap water on my face in 30 years, but I don't wear make up. I have clear skin, and have had since I stopped using cleansers on it (but that could be coincidence as I stopped using anything but water at the end of my teens).

vinoandbrie · 22/05/2020 14:29

Bar soap much better, on every level.

SerenDippitty · 22/05/2020 14:31

Just use plain water on my face. On the very rare occasion I wear make up I use a cleanser.

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 14:31

I wear concealer, blush, mascara and eyebrow powder every day plus skin that is prone to acne. So I really need to cleanse my skin with more then just water Sad

I think it’s fine but it occurs to me I would prefer liquid soap if I was in someone else’s house Hmm

OvernightBloats · 22/05/2020 14:34

My granny was very frugal and never liked to waste anything. I now do what she did with the tiny pieces of soap that become too fiddly to wash with. She used to put the small piece on top of the new block of soap, rub them together (new soap surface has to be wet) and leave to dry overnight. The two pieces fuse together. You do have to be careful for the first couple of days after doing this so you don't dislodge them. It is so satisfying though when doing this!

I've got bars of soap and liquid soap and use them both interchangably. I have liquid soap around so that if visitors find bar soap a bit yuck they can use it.

I am not sure, and have not read the thread so don't know if someone else has pointed this out, but I think early in the covid pandemic people said bar soap was more effective at "killing" the virus?

What I would say is that I don't have sandpaper hands and I rarely use hand cream. I think I am washing my hands enough so maybe it's the soap I use? I use some Lime & Basil from Waitrose in both bar and liquid form and have a couple of bars left from my Arran Aromatics advent calendar.

SomeBunnyovertheRainbow · 22/05/2020 14:34

For face I really recommend a Make Up Eraser cloth or similar off brand product. I use it to remove all make up at night. No soap required, just water. I don’t wear waterproof mascara though

Nottherealslimshady · 22/05/2020 14:35

Bar soap and shower gel would be equally effective. Unless you have a contactless soap dispenser it's really no different

lifestooshort123 · 22/05/2020 14:37

Some of the posts on here amaze me - how do you think we managed before liquid soap? Even bubble bath was a Christmas treat (very few showers in the 50s so no shower gel needed) and we used Wright's Coal Tar or Palmolive bars all the time. I still buy the former but use Dove on my face in the evenings - just warm water and a good rub with a muslin in the mornings.

Scruffyoak · 22/05/2020 14:39

We only ever use bar soap now.

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 14:39

For the frugaleers: this soap net is a nice solution for very small left over pieces of soap. Just put them in the net and it will produce a lot of foam when you make it wet and you can use it until the very last bit!

Wright's Coal Tar

This has now been banned. It smells like the old soap but is not the same. I'd kill for the real stuff. It was the best think of psoriasis and eczema.
