To use bar soap instead of liquid handsoap

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 12:38

Liquid handsoap is sold out completely, at every shop here (we live outside the UK).
Bar soap is still widely available though for the same price as it was before (unfortunately that doesn't apply to liquid handsanitizer, this has become 3 times more expensive then it was before).

I still have enough handsoap left for about 2 weeks use, but I'm afraid there still won't be any available after we run out of our current supply. I was planning to buy bar soap to put by the sink in the toilet but DH thinks it's grim to use bar soap for washing hands after toilet use. He says we better buy shower gel and use that instead.
I'm thinking that won't do the cleansing job as good as bar soap.

AIBU to think it's fine to use bar soap in the toilet?

YABU : it's grim, use showergel

YANBU : don't worry, it's fine to use bar soap

Bar soap is better all round! Have his and hers bars if your DH is precious about it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/05/2020 12:49

Can't stand liquid soap. Bar soap all the way.

Mind you, I use 'good' bar soap - the triple-milled, soft, natural smelling variety made with vegetable oils, not the supermarket stuff.

Winterwoollies · 22/05/2020 12:49

Bar soap is better! Much less packaging, it’s hardly unhygienic as the SOAP breaks down the cells walls of any germs left on the soap, whereas the plunger of a bottle of soap will just harbour bacteria, and it is much cheaper than bottled liquid soap.

Honestly, I don’t understand why people think it’s inferior? Hot water a bar of soap is all you need.

Caterinaballerina · 22/05/2020 12:50

Bar soap all the way here as one of my little swaps to help the environment. Also check out a product called a soap saver, it’s a little non slip soap mat.

Wintershit5 · 22/05/2020 12:50

Omg what kind of question is this.
Confused

IncrediblySadToo · 22/05/2020 12:50

Bar soap in En-suite, kitchen - liquid soap in shared bathrooms/toilets.

I regularly wash the liquid soap container.

Cracked bar soap for communal use just seems germy & grim. No idea why some cracks & some doesn't? Frequency of use maybe?

ChocolatelyAsFuck · 22/05/2020 12:51

I’ve never used liquid soap in my own home, I hate it. Use a good quality bar soap that lathers well, and if used daily it shouldn’t do that annoying dried cracked out thing.

There’s a little plastic thing you can buy on eBay for a couple of pounds which is a soap dish with a little built in water drainer, so any water drains straight into the sink. Absolute life saver and prevents the soap going white at the bottom/manky soap dish thing.

ClassicCola · 22/05/2020 12:51

Bar soap is the in thing on MN. I find it a bit slimy after a few uses.

GreyishDays · 22/05/2020 12:52

Bar soap is fine, also what do you think shower gel is? The same as liquid hand soap. It’s all detergent.

LimpidPools · 22/05/2020 12:52

Bar soap is better. But shower gel is the same as hand soap, and as bubble bath as a PP said. So he can use that if he wants.

But bar soap is still better.

fitzbilly · 22/05/2020 12:52

Nope. It's not grim at all.

I only ever use bar soap now, lasts ages and better for the environment.

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 12:54

@ChandlerIsTheBestFriend

It's an issue in our household so it is a question Grin

Besides I think we can all agree that what was acceptable re hygiene has changed in time, I know my DG told me how many people when she was young used to take a bath just once per week on saturday, the whole family using the same water, it was normal back then but I think the majority of people these days would say that's grim.
The fact that DH thinks bar soap in the toilet is grim is in itself proof that standards of hygiene are constantly changing, I think.

Bar soap is fine if used properly- as long as everyone lathers the soap into a foam for 20 seconds then it works fine. If it's used regularly then it shouldn't really crack or go manky.

In terms of faecal bacteria on the soap bar- it's unlikely to survive long and would be washed off during the washing action. Also it works well for Covid-19.

SoupDragon · 22/05/2020 12:54

I use bar soap but it annoys me immensely when the bar cracks and it looks manky

Mine doesn’t do this.

That's nice for you.

1Morewineplease · 22/05/2020 12:54

I gather that fancier soaps tend not to crack or gunk up as they are hard pressed. It’s to do with how they’re made.
I now do what my mum does, which is to pop it on a radiator for a while, before you use it to ‘bake’ it and harden it.

Hope that helps.

AlCalavicci · 22/05/2020 12:54

I use bar soap and shampoo , i much prefer them it last much longer is cheaper and better for the environment whats not to like ?

I do tend to wonder what to do with the bits though when it is almost run out , i have considered buying a sponge and cutting a slot in it and shoving the soap slivers in but I dont really like sponges ( I use a flannel ) .
Has anyone got any other ideas ?

Bar soap here too, I buy 2lb blocks of carbolic soap and cut it into smaller bits. DH has started using Pears bar soap instead of hand wash following a nasty bout of dishydrotic eczema and it's made so much difference.

EastBoundAndDown · 22/05/2020 12:57

I bought bar soap when the liquid soap had run out in the shops - Pears is lovely it leaves your hands feeling cleaner, I think, than with liquid soap. Isn't slimy and hasn't cracked either.
So I've been converted!! 😄

KitchenConfidential · 22/05/2020 12:58

This is an epic first world issue!!

1Morewineplease · 22/05/2020 12:58

@AlCalavicci
Years ago, some people ( mainly elderly and thrifty ) would melt the scraps together to make a new soap.

Sciurus83 · 22/05/2020 12:59

The fact that DH thinks bar soap in the toilet is grim is in itself proof that standards of hygiene are constantly changing, I think

No it's proof that your DH has an incorrect view of hygiene issues. Bar soap is not unhygienic

minisoksmakehardwork · 22/05/2020 12:59

If bar soap is cracking then it's because it's drying out. In our house it's how I know if the kids are washing their hands properly ;-)
