To use bar soap instead of liquid handsoap

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 12:38

Liquid handsoap is sold out completely, at every shop here (we live outside the UK).
Bar soap is still widely available though for the same price as it was before (unfortunately that doesn't apply to liquid handsanitizer, this has become 3 times more expensive then it was before).

I still have enough handsoap left for about 2 weeks use, but I'm afraid there still won't be any available after we run out of our current supply. I was planning to buy bar soap to put by the sink in the toilet but DH thinks it's grim to use bar soap for washing hands after toilet use. He says we better buy shower gel and use that instead.
I'm thinking that won't do the cleansing job as good as bar soap.

AIBU to think it's fine to use bar soap in the toilet?

YABU : it's grim, use showergel

YANBU : don't worry, it's fine to use bar soap

I am thinking now that DH can make his own liquid handsoap of bar soap on a sunday afternoon if he insists on having his liquid soap. I'm having a laugh here all by myself because I am picturing him with a grumpy face and wearing an apron, busy in the kitchen creatine his special soap whilst mumbling: "My precioussssss"
😂😂😂

Dove is not soap. I won’t go into why as I am sure you can goggle if interested.
But for soap I use bar of coal tar. Great stuff and the smell reminds me of my childhood.

BreatheAndFocus · 22/05/2020 13:37

Bar soap everywhere in my house - well, everywhere there’s a sink 😃
It lasts longer, there’s more choice, it’s more economical, better for the environment - and my hands aren’t dry anymore.

(I kept buying the moisturising liquid soaps and couldn’t understand why my hands were so horribly dry all the time. I now use good quality bar soap and the difference is amazing 😎 )

englebertsausagedog · 22/05/2020 13:37

Seems that it solves your issues op Grin you don't have to go soap hunting and he can stop moaning! I only make it because the kitchen thing fits perfectly and a soap dish wouldn't fit otherwise I wouldn't be arsed.

Some of the best bar soaps I've used were the ones I bought during my holidays in Greece. Really love olive soap and always brought them back as a souvenir!

Bar soap all the way! No single use plastic, kinder to skin generally (though I do have pathetic skin so maybe others don't suffer from the bottle stuff), don't have to press the lever with your elbow!

Destroyedpeople · 22/05/2020 13:45

@Honeybee ...did you know you can also use that pure Greek olive oil soap instead of shampoo? It's really lovely with a rich lather and conditioning qualities. You can really save a fortune if you just get a big bar and cut it in two.

I haven't bought any plastic bottles for my bathroom for months and my hair looks great.

rosegoldwatcher · 22/05/2020 13:46

When liquid soap became in short supply I dug out some gift soap bars that I had been using to scent the interiors of clothes drawers.
One of these is a series of coloured translucent 'shoes' embedded in white soap. As it was so pretty I nabbed it for the ensuite.
My hands have been far less dry since using it and it doesn't suffer from cracking or jelly bottom!

tomhardyfan · 22/05/2020 13:47

We only use the Dettol soap it's actually not drying on your hands at all

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 13:50

@Destroyedpeople really?
I didn't know that! My Greek friend has taught me that it's fine too to use on your face and intimate parts but never mentioned using it for hair as well.
I definetly will give it a try if I can get my hands on a nice quality olive soap bar here.
I have quite thick wavy hair so very interested in anything that can help it get more moisturized.
Thanks for the tip!

Savon de Marseille bar soap lasts ages.Great for stopping body odour as well.

I buy it in TK Maxx when they have it in,currently I have about ten large bars.

Dove isn’t soap, would never use it.

SerenDippitty · 22/05/2020 13:51

I love Scottish Fine Soaps company soap.

Anyone remember Lux? Camay?

Destroyedpeople · 22/05/2020 13:53

Do try it you can save a fortune.
You can often find it in little health food type places. I warn you though don't get it in your eyes it is savage for some reason.

thismumismad · 22/05/2020 13:54

YANBU. In fact you're being very smart to use bar soap. Here's a link to a study done by a teacher
www.google.com/amp/s/www.sciencealert.com/this-simple-experiment-with-bread-is-a-genius-way-to-get-kids-to-wash-their-hands/amp
Like other people have said dove is not a soap, imperial leather has a detergent in it and pears soap is glycerin based but again with a detergent in it.
Here is a study done by the bbc into what this detergent does to your skin
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/1DjRTHSCZK3h7V6dlxyHRdP/are-my-wash-products-damaging-my-skinttps:youtu.be/tIwdf3WKe3Y
Most commercial soaps have the naturally occurring glycerin removed, it makes for a harder bar, but will dry out your skin.
I have been making my own soap for over 10 years now and in all that time have not used a commercial moisturiser on my skin as I no longer need to. I started doing my own soap because I suffered with guttate psoriasis over most of the top half of my body and one day in the shower loads of my skin came away and it hurt so bad that I cried most of that day. I did a huge lot of research and took the plunge into making soap. My skin cleared up in just 3 weeks and the psoriasis has never come back.
Here's a video which shows the science in a fun way why bar soap is far superior in the fight against the Corona virus.

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 13:55

My DG used Lux soap and packages that were opened were put between clothes to make them smell fresh. I still do this when I buy Nesti Dante or other lovely soap with packages that still have a lingering smell after you take out the soap.

My other DG loved Vinolia soap. Now that is vintage! I once read that it was provided to the 1st Class passengers on board of the Titanic. No idea if it's still available today.

I use olive oil as a serum under my moisturiser. It's great.

Tiredmum100 · 22/05/2020 13:56

I use bar soap. I switched before covid in an attempt to reduce my plastic waste. I use it in the shower, later it up and it never goes 'manky' or cracked ( not yet anyway). I think its fine as long as you use it regularly.

thismumismad · 22/05/2020 13:56

480Widdio savon de Marseille is soap made with sea water, which incidentally I do too, unless I'm doing a goats milk soap.

SerenDippitty · 22/05/2020 13:57

Waitrose also do some lovely glycerine soaps in nice fragrances.

Tiredmum100 · 22/05/2020 13:58

@thismumismad I suffer with terrible guttate psoriasis all over my back, arms, inner and outer thighs etc. How do you make your own soap?

LellyMcKelly · 22/05/2020 14:02

Bar soap is better for the environment and for you. Any bugs you leave on the soap after using it as killed by the soap so it’s always clean. Every time to touch the top of the liquid soap press you are touching someone else’s wee.

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 14:03

Unfortunately bar soap is not available in many variations in this country. There are 2 big local brands (both make soaps that have formulas over 100 years old). Then there are some very cheap brands that dry out your skin.

Occasionally I can find dr Bronner, Nesti Dante or Dove. In the UK and rest of Europe bar soap are more part of a tradition and more appreciated, good bar soap as a lovely every day luxury.

Bar soap..I never use liquid soap in the house.

Deadringer · 22/05/2020 14:05

Dove is a beauty bar rather than a soap, but it kills coronavirus and other nasties all the same. I use it because it's mild and moisturising, i even wash my face with it

CoachBombay · 22/05/2020 14:07

We only use bar soap in this house for everything! Bar soap by the sink in the bathroom, and then me and DS have a bar soap each for bathing. 😳

I use imperial leather original and that's what's by the sink. DS has some bubble gum smelling bar soap that he loves, I used to use imperial leather on him but he got fed up of "smelling like mummy". Two seperate soap dishes by the shower for everyone's bar. We also use imperial leather talcum powder 😂 I think I'm addicted to the smell.
