To use bar soap instead of liquid handsoap

Liquid handsoap is sold out completely, at every shop here (we live outside the UK).
Bar soap is still widely available though for the same price as it was before (unfortunately that doesn't apply to liquid handsanitizer, this has become 3 times more expensive then it was before).

I still have enough handsoap left for about 2 weeks use, but I'm afraid there still won't be any available after we run out of our current supply. I was planning to buy bar soap to put by the sink in the toilet but DH thinks it's grim to use bar soap for washing hands after toilet use. He says we better buy shower gel and use that instead.
I'm thinking that won't do the cleansing job as good as bar soap.

AIBU to think it's fine to use bar soap in the toilet?

YABU : it's grim, use showergel

YANBU : don't worry, it's fine to use bar soap

I switched to bar soap instead of liquid soap and shower gel. Was a very good move!

Rockbird · 31/05/2020 07:36

Sorry to bump a dead thread but @Figmentofmyimagination I bought the soap dish on your recommendation and I LOVE it! I'm obsessed with tipping it up to drain the water out, it's so much cleaner.

GinisLife · 31/05/2020 08:10

My Ocado order is coming tonight with 2 bars of soap and a soap dish because of this thread 😀

3LittleMonkeyz · 31/05/2020 08:28

I have both. If my hands are getting dry or sore I switch to bar soap but I find it a bit of a faff (especially when washing the kids hands!) so we use liquid soap too. However, we did run out at one point during the shortages and used bar soap. Now my eldest asks to use bar soap most times. So we might phase out the liquid soap

Bar soap is gross, I could never use it. Everyone has rubbed it all over their dirty hands before you, it’s definitely not hygienic.

People really aren’t very educated on this topic, are they?

Soap (bar and other formats) is absolutely amazing stuff.

totallyyesno · 31/05/2020 09:06

I had no idea so many people used liquid soap still! Bar soap is far better for the environment and is not grim at all.

totallyyesno · 31/05/2020 09:08

The only place I have liquid soap is in the kitchen and I have a ceramic dispenser so I can fill it out of big liquid soap bags.

Bar soap for hand washing and in shower instead of shower gel. Shampoo and conditioner refilled. Massively reduced plastic waste

CherryPavlova · 31/05/2020 09:10

Bar soap is gross, I could never use it. Everyone has rubbed it all over their dirty hands before you, it’s definitely not hygienic.

Did you not notice it reduces in size as it is washed each time it is used? The outer ‘layer’ washes away so it’s much more hygienic than scummed up little levers that everyone pushes with their dirty hands.
Oceans, rivers and large areas of landfill blocked with plastic are pretty unpleasant too.

We get gorgeous bar soap from the little eco shop that refills shampoo and conditioner. They smell heavenly - lavender lotus flower mint

SockYarn · 31/05/2020 09:18

We went back to bar soap a few years ago and I can't remember why I ever switched to shower gel or liquid soap in the first place. Bar soap lasts longer, makes my hands/body feel cleaner and doesn't come in a single use plastic container.

The only hand soap I use is in the kitchen, a refillable bottle from Splosh.

mizu · 31/05/2020 09:31

Bar soap all the way. Can't be doing with all that plastic waste.

SockYarn · 31/05/2020 09:33

Oh and the very best soap I have ever had was bought on holiday in France, those lovely colourful "savon de Marseille" bars with the scent stamped on them. Cheap as chips, think I bought 10 bars for 10 or 12 euros. Last ages, we were on holiday last July and I'm still using the last one now in the shower.

I volunteer in a charity shop and we get a lot of posh soap donated so I buy it when I see it. Currently in the bathroom we have a nice bar of floral M&S soap which was paper wrapped, not plastic. Also a good old bar of Palmolive is nice. Not keen on Dove. DH is a "Simple" man.

zerowastemum13 · 07/06/2020 12:09

I'm literally alllll about the bar of soap - I actually think ones with a pump are manky because everyone touches them before they've washed their hands, whereas a soap you wash with your hands!

SerenDippitty · 07/06/2020 12:18

I do use mostly soap but like nice shower gel now and again. I use L’Occitane, you can take the bottles back to the shop (in normal times) and they get recycled.

MulticolourMophead · 07/06/2020 12:24

@Rockbird

I'm just adding to my shop and need to buy more soap as we're on our last bar (Dove, didn't know that wasn't soap).

I'm awash with nostalgia. Pears, Shield, Imperial Leather, Palmolive, Wright's... I feel like I'm in my grandmother's house and I want to buy all of them

I can't use a lot of these soaps, as they have extra chemicals in, including SLS in some cases.

I use Lux mostly, and recently bought a pack of Johnson's baby soap, which are about as basic a soap as you can get, and lovely to use.

Fozzleyplum · 07/06/2020 12:25

We use only bar soap. I alternate between cheaper brands like Imperial Leather and supermarket lemon soap, and Nesti Dante. I recently bought one of these, which works really well to keep the soap dry.

Merigoround · 07/06/2020 13:52
@Honeybee ...did you know you can also use that pure Greek olive oil soap instead of shampoo? It's really lovely with a rich lather and conditioning qualities. You can really save a fortune if you just get a big bar and cut it in two.

I haven't bought any plastic bottles for my bathroom for months and my hair looks great.
This is something I am going to try!
I have a small bar of olive oil soap that has been sitting in my airing cupboard for a while. It didnt have any smell which is why Ive not used it yet.I wasnt sure what it even was since the wrapper looks like gift wrapping. No text on it at all.
So Ive just been up and unwrapped the soap. Its definitely greek ( greek writing imprinted on the soap itself) and probably olive oil . Ive washed my hands with it and it lathers up so much better than any of the other hand soaps I have used .
I cant wait to wash my hair with it now.
If it all goes horribly wrong Ill just rewash it I expect.

Ill report back later .

Merigoround · 07/06/2020 15:12

So because I have no patience...
I tried the Olive oil soap.
It didnt lather up much at all first go so I rinsed and repeated . The second lathering was much the same as you would get from a normal shampoo.
Rinsing off the second time made me concentrate on the texture of my hair and it felt quite rough and dry ( can wet hair feel dry?)
So as I need my hair to behave itself tomorrow I had to put some conditioner on it. Just enough to get that smooth feeling.
Once combed out and dried it looks and feels the same as usual. Possible a little heavier? Not sure. But there is no smell at all on my hair. Usually I buy good quality shampoos which have a nice lasting smell to them. So that is probably the only difference.
I will be able to tell more tomorrow when I come to style my hair ready for work.
But if it gives the same results as my expensive shampoo does there is no contest. Im so over paying lots of money for something that doesnt benefit me a great deal.
