To use bar soap instead of liquid handsoap

Liquid handsoap is sold out completely, at every shop here (we live outside the UK).
Bar soap is still widely available though for the same price as it was before (unfortunately that doesn't apply to liquid handsanitizer, this has become 3 times more expensive then it was before).

I still have enough handsoap left for about 2 weeks use, but I'm afraid there still won't be any available after we run out of our current supply. I was planning to buy bar soap to put by the sink in the toilet but DH thinks it's grim to use bar soap for washing hands after toilet use. He says we better buy shower gel and use that instead.
I'm thinking that won't do the cleansing job as good as bar soap.

AIBU to think it's fine to use bar soap in the toilet?

YABU : it's grim, use showergel

YANBU : don't worry, it's fine to use bar soap

Unfortunately we can't buy Pears soap here - it's based on glycerine isn't it? Very gentle on the skin.

I also miss TK Max, they have such lovely smelling Italian soaps! I can buy Nesti Dante here though but very expensive.
Found a local brand which I love, handmade soaps with cows milk as the first ingredient.

Fgs just use bar soap save money save plastic. My dd has a horror of soggy bottomed bar soap so has various methods of keeping it dry between uses.

I remember my young half sister telling me I was 'yuckay' for using it....

RainbowBabyDreams · 22/05/2020 13:03

Why have they started wrapping bars of soap in plastic film?

Destroyedpeople · 22/05/2020 13:03

Oh I love the soaps in tk max. ..

MiniMum97 · 22/05/2020 13:05

Bar soap is fine. Your husband is an idiot.

Soap kills a lot of germs. And any that do remain will be washed away when you wash your hands.

We use bar soap everywhere. It's kinder to hands generally, cheaper and better for the environment and perfectly adequate at cleaning hands.

Anti bacterial soaps of any kind should be avoided as the kill the good bacteria on your hands.

I use liquid soap - though it tends to be bubble bath or shower gel - as I live with children who think soap is a fun thing to play with. I have better things to do then unblock drains they manage to get bits of bar soap down.

Also don't people regularly clean their soap dispensers? Or where they place the bar soap?

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 13:06

@KitchenConfidential

I was thinking the same thing today Grin

Ours doesn’t dry out because we have one bathroom and we’re all washing our hands loads so it doesn’t get a chance to crack. Even the bar I use in the shower is only used once a day (dc prefer shower gel) and doesn’t crack. I use imperial leather because it reminds me of my childhood. Grin

Deadringer · 22/05/2020 13:08

We switched to bar soap and shampoo a couple of years ago and would never use the liquid stuff now. I think your dh is wrong, but he is entitled to his opinion, so if he wants fill up the soap dispenser with cheap shower gel he can, while you switch to the more skin and environmentally friendly bar.

We went over to bar soap several years back although do have a liquid one in downstairs toilet as that is used by guests.
I bought the Joseph Joseph soap dish to use with the bar soaps as it drains the water away.

BasinHaircut · 22/05/2020 13:10

Ohh I’m a pears woman.

I made the mistake of buying a pack of soap in Lidl once and the smell was repulsive. Came in handy during all the panic buying though when you couldn’t even buy bar soap round here! Glad I left it in the cupboard and didn’t chuck it!

ChocolatelyAsFuck · 22/05/2020 13:11

Seriously get one of these. Stops soap going manky and doesn’t need cleaning.

@Deadringer

Our toilet sink has minimal space so it's either a bottle of liquid 'stuff' or a piece of bar soap on a soap plate Grin. No space for both!

I love my bar soaps. Got one for Christmas and it has only just run out now.

Deadringer · 22/05/2020 13:15

Who does the shopping Honeybee85? If it's you buy the bars, he will get over it.

LondonJax · 22/05/2020 13:15

Another one who's used bar soap for a few years now. One bar lasts for ages!

Yes, the soap dish can get a bit slimy if you don't rinse it out every so often. I just take the soap out, rinse the dish under the hot tap and shake it. Then the soap goes back in and the 'slime' dries up in no time. But it's no different to mopping up the drips or trails left by liquid soap.

I found my normal soap bars would crack but since I switched to a more moisturising one, the cracking has stopped. And it's not expensive, I use the Tesco Extracts brand, lasts forever!

SophieB100 · 22/05/2020 13:17

The hospital my daughter works at says bar soap is better than liquid soap. Their advice is lots of bar soap (doesn't matter what brand) and water as hot as you can stand. I like Dove bar soap (on offer at Lidl at the mo!)

bellabasset · 22/05/2020 13:17

My understanding is that if you sweat a lot bar soap is better for removing bacteria than shower gel. It is knowing HOW to wash your hands that is relevant. Pears, Dettol and Wrights coal tar are all good soaps.

I have found that the 200ml Aveeno sensitive moisturising cream brilliant for dry skin, buy on Amazon for £3:50.Great for hands as well

AnnieOH1 · 22/05/2020 13:17

You can make your own liquid soap from bar soap. There's loads of help videos on Google etc but essentially it's a case of grating the soap bar and boiling it with water. You may need to vary the amount of water depending on how thick you prefer the liquid soap and based on what bar you use too. Just save your current dispenser(s) so you've got something to put it in. :)

LondonJax · 22/05/2020 13:17

Oh, I like that soap dish @ChocolatelyAsFuck - where did you get it from? DH has a habit of wetting the soap and sort of 'scooping' water back into the dish with it, no idea how he manages it, even our teenager can't do it!

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 13:18

Yes @Deadringer went to 3 different shops yesterday to find liquid handsoap, I'm a SAHM, DH works long hours so he surely has no time for 'soap hunting' !

BoingBoingyBoing · 22/05/2020 13:18

It's soap. It's self cleaning.

PorridgeStoat · 22/05/2020 13:21

DP used to be a bit like this with bar soap, then when we started washing out hands loads more he discovered that Dove bar soap is far far kinder on the skin than any of the liquids. He's changed his tune now Smile

englebertsausagedog · 22/05/2020 13:22

We use bar soap but in the kitchen we have a Joseph Joseph all in one kitchen thing that has a bottle for liquid soap, one for washing up liquid and a space for your washing up sponge/cloth.

So I make my own liquid soap for that using bar soap.

Just grate the bar, or use a potato peeler and melt it in a pan with about 8 cups of water until it melts. Then I let it cool a little and pour it in the pump.

ChocolatelyAsFuck · 22/05/2020 13:22

eBay! Just search draining soap dish with suction pads. Or Lakeland do some as well.

Add me to the list of people who love TK Maxx soaps.
