To use bar soap instead of liquid handsoap

Liquid handsoap is sold out completely, at every shop here (we live outside the UK).
Bar soap is still widely available though for the same price as it was before (unfortunately that doesn't apply to liquid handsanitizer, this has become 3 times more expensive then it was before).

I still have enough handsoap left for about 2 weeks use, but I'm afraid there still won't be any available after we run out of our current supply. I was planning to buy bar soap to put by the sink in the toilet but DH thinks it's grim to use bar soap for washing hands after toilet use. He says we better buy shower gel and use that instead.
I'm thinking that won't do the cleansing job as good as bar soap.

AIBU to think it's fine to use bar soap in the toilet?

YABU : it's grim, use showergel

YANBU : don't worry, it's fine to use bar soap

I use bar soap in the shower as well, my skin has never been healthier.

Andante57 · 22/05/2020 14:42

Pears is excellent. It also has the advantage that when the bar is reduced to a sliver it can be pressed into the declivity on either side of the soap.
Voila - everlasting soap.

C0RA · 22/05/2020 14:48

I also just use water on my face.

caperplips · 22/05/2020 14:51

We use bar soap in the bathroom beside the sink and in the shower but have liquid soap at the kitchen sink due to the layout.

It's certainly not cheaper for us as only use L'Occitane bar soap, it's so lovely on the skin and lasts for ages and never goes mushy.

I bought a Jo Malone bar soap for the bathroom for a party we had after Christmas, it smells gorgeous and we've only just finished it.

So, although they are expensive, they last a very long time in our house.

I find regular supermarket soap too drying for my skin and hate the sliminess and smell of dove.

I really really love a gorgeous bar of soap! I'm thinking of ordering some santa maria novella soaps online next

BikeRunSki · 22/05/2020 14:53

I’ve always used bar soap. Liquid soap wasn’t a thing until I was probably into my 20s. No plastic bottles.

CoachBombay · 22/05/2020 15:02

I also find the smell of a bar soap last longer on the skin. So I can smell the imperial soap for hours after I've washed with it.

One guy I was having a coffee with once as a quick date asked what my perfume was, I replied "soap" haha!

Rockbird · 22/05/2020 15:02

I reverted to bar soap at the start of all this and am totally converted, it's so much better and a more satisfying washing experience! Feels like your hands are really clean. We've been using Pears which reminds me of my grandmother. Won't be buying handwash again.

randomsabreuse · 22/05/2020 15:03

I hate bar soap because it's a slippery thing when wet and it seems to be alive.

I also find with very soft water it takes ages to wash it off your hands - 1 minute later and they still feel soapy - which is annoying when all you wanted to do was retrieve the thing from the sink where it just jumped!

Sugarhouse · 22/05/2020 15:06

Yanbu we always used liquid soap before this pandemic. Before lockdown my mum visited and brought me some bar soap once out liquid ran out we started using it and I won’t go back. Iv struggles with dry hands for over a decade and simple bar soap has helped them so much I no longer even need hand cream ( though I probably should still use it) il keep a liquid soap for after handling raw meat but otherwise bar soap all the way it cleans just as well, less plastic and lasts so much longer

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 22/05/2020 15:15

First time I was told that bar soap was unhygienic was fifteen years when district nurses were looking after my elderly relatives and insisted that we provide liquid soap. I think manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon and exploited this great marketing opportunity.
I’m sure I saw a study a few years back which proved that people cleaned their hands better with bar soap.
I use liquid soap because most people who come to my house expect it. But I keep lovely beautiful scented bar soap for my own use.

luckylavender · 22/05/2020 15:27

Bar soap much better for your skin.

MulticolourMophead · 22/05/2020 15:49

The fact that DH thinks bar soap in the toilet is grim is in itself proof that standards of hygiene are constantly changing, I think.

Nah. It just proves that advertising works.

Bar soap in this house too. I have sensitive skin, and I can't use many of the bar soaps, including Imperial Leather, Pears, etc. I check all the ingredients on soaps, and generally use Lux, which has few added extras like detergents.

I take the soaps out the packets and put them in my underwear drawer to dry out and harden a bit more, and this reduces the slime potential as well as selling nice.

The end bits get put into a soap saver bag like the one OP posted earlier, and this bag of soap is what I use in the shower as the bag is good for briskly rubbing and exfoliating the skin.

I don't use soap on my face. I make up my own cleanser from a recipe I found online, and this has been great for the rosacea on my face. I can buy the ingredients easily, and it saves a lot of packaging. I don't use a face cream, I make up a face oil using jojoba oil as a base, with added rosehip oil and essential oils. Has been working a treat.

StealthPolarBear · 22/05/2020 17:19

Love bar soap and have always used it. I am tempted by the shampoo, can anyone recommend anything?

LimpidPools · 22/05/2020 17:23

Could you share your cleanser recipe @MulticolourMophead?

Be much appreciated.

MulticolourMophead · 22/05/2020 19:40

I actually use this one, recipe is directly under photos.

I think it's the oatmeal and honey that do the trick, although lavender is good for sensitive skin. Well, it's been working for me.

If you google homemade facial cleanser, there are planty of recipes out there, you might find something else that appeals. Some are Amercian so you do have to beware of measurements, if you're not used to cups, etc.

lifestooshort123 · 22/05/2020 19:51

YetAnotherSpartacus
Wright's coal tar not banned in the UK. Bought my last lot from Asda online.

CherryPavlova · 22/05/2020 19:55

Bar soaps only.
I use guest soaps in kitchen handbasin and lavatories to stop the horrid cracked and grimy soap look.

JavaQ · 22/05/2020 20:04

YANBU- I've been using Olvary soaps -handmade soap bars from the UK not from Chna. Doesn't go manky or crack. I hate slime! There was a study on bacteria not growing on bars, so it is hygienic. No plastic either.

MotherofPearl · 22/05/2020 20:08

Love bar soap. In fact, without wanting to sound daft, unwrapping a lovely new bar of soap is one of my real joys in life!

OP, you can still get Lux and Vinolia in S. Africa. Smile Vinolia sandalwood is lovely.

I love Nesti Dante, Dr Bronner's and Le Petit Olivier.

safariboot · 22/05/2020 20:13

Bar soap is just as good at cleaning your hands as liquid. We're on bar soap now because our usual liquid is out of stock everywhere.

But I do think it needs a good soap dish so the bar's not left sitting in a puddle of water, or it'll go manky.

isthismylifenow · 22/05/2020 20:14

We can still get Vinolia here. Always reminds me of my Nana as she bought be a bar every year as a present when I was a child, she said everyone needed a posh soap.

We have far more of a choice of bar soap, but I use Lux mostly. I have tried Nesti and quite a few posh ones, including a Jo Malone. I can't use any of those in the bath or shower as I get the most awful thrush, I think they are far too scented. So white Lux (as there are so many scents available now) or Dove is all I can use. When my mum visits she takes back loads of Lifebuoy for her DP.

The DC use a anti bacterial one, they are quite sporty and get plenty sweaty and Dove or liquid soap doesn't really work that well. Bar soap is far better for teen pits.

isthismylifenow · 22/05/2020 20:17

Motherofpearl. Cross posted Smile. I am going to unwrap a Longmarket bar just to enjoy the smell. It's been in my drawer for ages.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 22/05/2020 20:21

We switched to bar soap at the beginning of lockdown as couldn’t get any liquid soap and for the first time in years my hands were noticeably less drier. Only thing is it it seems to leave a bit of a film on the sinks which liquid soap didn’t - but easily cleaned. Last longer and better for the environment too

Sunnyjac · 22/05/2020 20:29

What on earth is wrong with a bar of soap?!

ALongHardWinter · 22/05/2020 20:44

I always use a bar of soap to wash my hands (at home anyway!). I do have a bottle of liquid soap on the bathroom sink for visitors though. The amount of times I'm washing my hands these days,if I used liquid soap,I'd be getting through a bottle of it every few days!
