And no change before the 28th. What the hell is Nichola Sturgeon thinking?!

@Anniesnotmydaddy

Income tax is different. Once you hit the higher rate for tax you're worse off living in Scotland. And a government adviser has been in the press this week advocating a 70% band for "higher earners" to bail out the government after the Covid lockdown.

Ginkypig · 18/05/2020 13:35

Well out of 4 nations only one has decided to change things dramatically so do you not think you would be better looking at the one rather than focusing on (and ignoring the other 2) one of the countries that have taken the as it turns out majority decision.

Oh and Scotlands scientistific statistics are different for that area than England so far f course that dictates a different course of action.

Mascotte · 18/05/2020 13:35

I understood lockdown to preserve services but they are fine and able to cope. Other treatments and investigations need to start again. Mental health services need to get back to normal. Children need back to school. The risk to healthy children is minuscule.

YouHurtMeSoMuch · 18/05/2020 13:36

Indeed Sockyarn. In Scotland a few days ago there were a total of 100 people in intensive care with COVID 19. 10 regions had fewer than 5 each of those 100. And yet we have 10 more days of full lockdown, with likely very slow minor change after that. Meanwhile people get progressively more depressed and unhealthy sitting at home and the economy collapses about our ears.

Sock yarn. Thank you. I had no idea that income tax rates in Scotland were different. I naively thought they were the same across the UK. You learn something every day on Mumsnet!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 18/05/2020 13:37

I think it’s ridiculous that England isn’t still in full lockdown.

I never thought the day would come, that I’d be sitting in NI, looking at England and thinking “thank fuck I’m in a safer county”.

DahliaDay · 18/05/2020 13:37

Op will be back soon with some little gem

Ginkypig · 18/05/2020 13:38

Of course bloody autocorrect.

SockYarn · 18/05/2020 13:38

Exactly. But never mind, maybe on the 29th may we can all go to the recycling centre. That'll be nice. Hmm

Timefor45 · 18/05/2020 13:38

Anyone outside Scotland commenting on this is welcome to follow Scotland’s guidelines- all part of UK guidelines after all... Here in Scotland many people are using their common sense and are frustrated at the split country views. As I’ve said on a Scotsnet thread, only history will tell if lifting restrictions three weeks after England will make any difference at all? Where we live, people are going for takeaway coffees supporting independent businesses who trying to keep afloat and plenty of people at our local ‘beauty spots’ for exercise, just acting like grown ups and staying at a distance from others.

DahliaDay · 18/05/2020 13:38

Oh there we have it.... people getting more depressed and unhealthy sitting at home

backstairslavy · 18/05/2020 13:39

mascotte do you work in the NHS then? Friends and family do - majority of them - local hospital is almost at full capacity . We have unique challenges in northern Scotland particularly in that there are only two hospitals with ICU departments, covering from Aberdeenshire right up to the Shetland islands . It won’t take long for those beds to fill .

It is right and sensible that we remain in lockdown for now .

ilovesooty · 18/05/2020 13:40

I think she's right. People have been showing in England that they simply can't be trusted to behave responsibly.

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 13:40

I feel so sorry for them. Being outside is low risk for the virus. My family are there.

Orangeblossom78 · 18/05/2020 13:40

Also they need all the vitamin D they can get.

Amortentia · 18/05/2020 13:41

Do you realise that taxes in Scotland are already higher than other parts of the UK?

Yes, for higher rate taxes payers they are slightly higher. For most of the population who are not higher rate tax payers, pay less in Scotland, but don’t let facts get in your way.🙄

MarriedToABellend · 18/05/2020 13:41

Shes thinking the same as 2 other nations that make up the UK.
She's thinking about the infection rate above kowtowing to the pressure to lift the lockdown. She's thinking along the same lines as NI and Wales.
It's only England that have lifted their lockdown. 3 to 1 says it all imo.

0DETTE · 18/05/2020 13:42

I’d imagine she’s thinking of reducing deaths from COVID 19.

But perhaps the OP thinks she doing it just to spite her personally? And because she hates all our children and wants to spoil their fun.

Ursaminor · 18/05/2020 13:42

I live in the NHS Grampian health board area. Grampian has the highest rate of increase in positive cases in Scotland at the moment. It's believed locally (haven't got any official confirmation of this) that our peak is due at the end of May. If the Scottish Government are following their stated position of proceeding at the rate of the slowest area, the time scale set out makes sense. They are waiting for us.

Overtime2019 · 18/05/2020 13:43

I'm in Scotland and shes doing a bloody good job keeping lock down so are Wales they are trying to keep everyone safe yes I hate not being able to go and cuddle my mum or my kids not seeing family and friends but needs must and if we need to be in lock down longer then so be it

StoorieHoose · 18/05/2020 13:43

Could your posts be any more patronising Orange blossom?

Annamaria14 · 18/05/2020 13:43

What are you talking about OP.

We will be in lockdown in Ireland until the end of August.

People in Ireland have been astounded at England coming out of lockdown, when you have so many cases and deaths!

Broondug · 18/05/2020 13:44

I’m in Scotland. It’s a shit, lonely and worrying time but it’s for the best and Imo she’s made the right decision.

ChangeThePassword · 18/05/2020 13:44

Being outside is low risk for the virus. My family are there

Maybe you should invite them in?

Wink
Mellonsandgrapes · 18/05/2020 13:44

I’m fed up with lockdown in Scotland too but why are people only mentioning Scotland, has everyone else forgotten that Wales and Northern Ireland are still in lockdown? Why is everyone bashing Nicola Sturgeon when they aren’t bashing the government of Wales and Northern Ireland. It seems in MN it has to be one rule for Wales & Northern Ireland and another rule for Scotland!
