To think the north of England offers a worse quality of life than the South or Midlands?

I was thinking of moving to Lancashire, but having done some research online, it seems a lot of people have negative opinion of it. I'm now set on Warwickshire or Leicestershire. Does the north in general offer a worse quality of life than the Midlands? I know its cheaper up north but is it much worse up there?

Warwickshire and Leicestershire do have general anesthetics. The North don't. They operate on you without anaesthetic

They don't need anaesthetics in the north, their smaller brains don't have pain receptors. (In the south they do namby pamby mindfulness to deal with the pain - might as well offend the lot of you from my safe place in the Midlands!)

I’m howling at some of these replies.

You’d hate it here OP, up North we have things called gravy/curry that we put on our fish & chips, we strike up conversations in the shop queue, we have some awfully (beautiful) landmarks, parks & lakes, people chat to our kids on the bus about their day - it’s bloody awful Confused

BojoKilledMyMojo · 17/05/2020 21:19

Yes it's horrendous up here. Earning a salary which is on a par with London salaries and being able to have a teeny tiny mortgage, miles and miles of beautiful open spaces on the doorstep, friendly people around, some of the most vibrant cities in the country and gorgeous eateries is a hell of a cross to bear.

Northern folk don't tend to take too well to southerners who assume we're all poor and living a shit life. Just a heads up.

ofwarren · 17/05/2020 21:19

This is probably your 4th post on the same topic.
Why do you keep asking the same question?

VimtoCordial · 17/05/2020 21:19

There's a Waitrose in Preston.

It's rubbish because they don't sell clogs.

howrudeforme · 17/05/2020 21:19

Mmm, when I moved from London my first thought was to go to Manchester (never been that far), but ended up buying in Essex

Five years on, wish I’d gone to Manchester area.

I think the fear of ‘the north’ is that it’s financially hard to move back south if you wanted/needed to. There are good places and bad places everywhere.

Onone · 17/05/2020 21:19

If that’s your attitude we don’t want you up here!!..

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/05/2020 21:20

Avocados? Those are those little salty fish in tins, aren't they?

user1471565182 · 17/05/2020 21:21

I remember some southerners moved to our town when I was at school and nearly got forcibly married to John Prescott and eaten because they ordered 'pork sarnies' at the chip shop

KKSlider · 17/05/2020 21:22

You're near to me, @LuluJakey1! I'm a bike ride away from WB.

I say "bike ride", we both know I mean pony and trap.

chomalungma · 17/05/2020 21:22

On a serious note - there is a reason why the Conservatives did well in the recent elections with the Red Wall - and there are parts that do have massive deprivation and poverty. There is a reason why Covid-19 has hit parts of the North badly.

But that's also true for other parts of the country as well

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 21:22

They eat weird food like "Pie and Peas" That's right, just "pie and peas", with no potatoes.

Weirdos. Grin

20 years on I'm still "What? Just a pie and some pies?"

Oh and a strange affiliation for pease pudding.

The natives don't hold it against you that much.

VimtoCordial · 17/05/2020 21:22

Milton Keynes actually IS lovely

MK is one of my fave places! Love Willan Lake, love the planned streets, so many trees!

Willow2017 · 17/05/2020 21:23

Loving this thread.
Dont come north op we Scots are still fighting the English over Berwick so not a good bet if you want the quiet life up north. The streets are running in blood most days. Damm pia to get out your tackety bits. Goes off to sharpen claymore

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/05/2020 21:24

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 21:24

And gravy on chips will always be wrong.

bloodyhellsbellsx · 17/05/2020 21:24

Get yasel a chicken parmo and you’ll never even look south again 🐷

KKSlider · 17/05/2020 21:24

Oh God yeah, I forgot about the Scots. I can barely go a day without my street being pillaged and my daughters carried off.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/05/2020 21:24

Born in Yorkshire now living over the border in Lancashire

Well done. I love hearing about success stories.

Yet a post in Chat inviting people to list all the working class towns they know of gets loads of genuine replies....how odd.

I don't think you can underestimate the effect of the northern sense of humour. These goady posts are not uncommon and always get the same response when directed at us. Start a thread bashing londoners and you'll see a much less light hearted outcome.

TimothyTerrible · 17/05/2020 21:24

I’ve lived in the north and south, and spent a bit of time in the midlands. There are pros and cons, but there’s no escaping the fact that the weather is shit up there. They do have better bakeries though.

Nicedayforawedding · 17/05/2020 21:25

We are in Yorkshire. Stay where you are - you’re not local!

VimtoCordial · 17/05/2020 21:25

Skelmersdale

Oops! Grin Grin Grin

mrsBtheparker · 17/05/2020 21:25

No don't, the cobbles on the M6 will ruin your suspension!

Whenwillthisbeover · 17/05/2020 21:25

Yes, I agree it’s grim up north, you stay the fuck away. Keep our cheaper cost of living and green and pleasant land to ourselves thank you very much.

I fucking hate biting but I did, I bit.

SticksandStonez · 17/05/2020 21:26

You’ve all made my night. @Zaphodsotherhead and @user1471565182 you two especially!
