To think the north of England offers a worse quality of life than the South or Midlands?

I was thinking of moving to Lancashire, but having done some research online, it seems a lot of people have negative opinion of it. I'm now set on Warwickshire or Leicestershire. Does the north in general offer a worse quality of life than the Midlands? I know its cheaper up north but is it much worse up there?

Oooh... @ofwarren suggests this is your fourth post on the same topic!

Did you not like the previous answers?

What exactly are you looking for?

Is it a cheap , massive farmhouse, with two acres of land, near a village with twelve gastropubs, a butcher, a baker, a Seasalt, an art gallery , an artisan baker, a deli and a farm shop where avocados are locally sourced and a school that’s outstanding according to Ofsted ?

OxanaVorontsova · 17/05/2020 21:26

When I first moved oop north 25 years ago, escaping from the Cotswolds, I couldn't understand a word people said ( 'wees keeys ah thees keeys') but I wouldn't swap it for anything, we have great weather, great people, my salary goes much further and the coast is always in reach. What more could you want?

HollaHolla · 17/05/2020 21:27

... and god-forbid you make it to Scotland. We live in caves, and I’m running a water wheel to power my phone.
Yorkshire/Lancashire are like the Deep South for us.
(Ps - we even have Waitrose in Edinburgh/Glasgow/Stirling. Not that we recognise any of the ingredients, obvs.) 🙄

*Born in Yorkshire now living over the border in Lancashire

Well done. I love hearing about success stories.*

Love it! As my late Dad used to say to my Tyke OH, the only good thing to come out of Yorkshire is the M62.

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/05/2020 21:28

I was actually born in the South.

It's fine, I got better.

Ginfilledcats · 17/05/2020 21:28

@DDrickyDD you have another post about this where about 90% of the posters have given you fair and varied and specific detail about Lancashire. Where the hell have you come to the conclusion it's dreadful.

I agree with pp you sound snobbish and want to live with rich people, please kindly stay away from our lovely Lancashire.

How odd.

Also how odd to make a decision on where to live based in opinions on mums net to begin with!

TheGreatWave · 17/05/2020 21:29

Ocado just reached our desolate parts - and then covid happened and now they have decided that they no longer want to come, well it was good whilst it lasted.

moonmaya · 17/05/2020 21:29

I would tell you, but I don't think you would survive.
It's basically anarchy up here.
Only the strongest survive.
But at least rent is cheap

Healthyandhappy · 17/05/2020 21:30

Live in Barnsley and amoint of ppl I see from down south saying how friendly Barnsley people are etc. Tbh if i was gonna move go to dorset or something

TitianaTitsling · 17/05/2020 21:30

How north is north? Wick? That's proper north, although us Scots do have only one WiFi between us all that we have to share so it can get problematic to be on MN! (Shite my times up!)

Whenwillthisbeover · 17/05/2020 21:31

Who cares about Waitrose in the north, no one because we have Booths which makes Waitrose on a level with Lidl.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 17/05/2020 21:31

I never really understood why Southerners believe it's grim up north, it's terribly parochial thinking.

I'm fully aware that the south is a mixed bag and they're not all Albert Square-dwelling pearly queens or hedge-fund managers (or indeed all Londoners).

It's very strange.

TheABC · 17/05/2020 21:31

God, I miss North Yorkshire. It's the most glorious county in England.

The main problem with the north is the lack of well-paid jobs. Which is what happens when you create cities and heartlands around certain industries and then the Government kills them off, four generations later with no replacement.

AdaColeman · 17/05/2020 21:31

@LuluJakey1 Fab photos, especially the beach!

Wolfgirrl · 17/05/2020 21:32

I live in the South West.

Honestly, we are the most forgotten about region in the entire country. We are hardly ever mentioned.

We have the highest discrepancy between house prices and average income in the country. Our region is a long peninsula that takes 5 hours to get from one end to the other via a crappy overpriced rail system. The infrastructure is awful. The only sizeable cities are Bristol, Exeter, Bournemouth and Plymouth, so if you dont live within a commutable distance to one of those you're utterly screwed job-wise. The furthest point to London takes the best part of a day. The only sizeable airport is Bristol and we have no trams.

The North may be 1 degree colder and have some 'rough' parts but it has cheap housing, beautiful countryside, a large choice of cities to commute to for work and has had a lot of government funding in recent years. Theyve got the possibility of HS2 coming up. Lots of well linked airports and trams.

I think it is an urban myth that the North is the worst off part of the country. In the South West we get sweet FA.

FreakStar · 17/05/2020 21:32

I'm happy to keep the 'grim up north' myth going- stops the southerners coming here and spoiling it!

doodleygirl · 17/05/2020 21:32

Hahaha, you just can’t get rid of the stupids

mrsBtheparker · 17/05/2020 21:32

And gravy on chips will always be wrong.

No worse than jellied eels, one of the most revolting things ever on a plate!

MarieQueenofScots · 17/05/2020 21:32

Born in Yorkshire now living over the border in Lancashire

I’m so sorry for your loss.

MsSquiz · 17/05/2020 21:33

@LuluJakey1 your photos make me sad! I miss days out at the beach! We got screwed over on a house we were meant to buy down there and ended up in Northumberland instead. It's very pretty and green, but give me Longsands any day of the week!

2littlledarlings · 17/05/2020 21:34

Are you serious 😂 yes absolutely horrendous best stay where you are...
Each place has good and bad areas, maybe do a bit of research and think about it but I don’t think you can generalise “the north” as being grim🙄

BakewellGin1 · 17/05/2020 21:35

😁 If that's your feeling going that far north please don't ever feel the need to try even further north

hennaoj · 17/05/2020 21:36

Well the North has John Snow. You can keep Jamie Lanister.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/05/2020 21:36

Milton Keynes actually IS lovely

I think there must be two Miltons Keynes.

IWouldDie4U · 17/05/2020 21:37

Maybe this is good enough for you op. Some of it is behind a paywall, but you’ll get the gist.
