Rough sleeping epidemic is a combination of overpopulation (England as a whole is too densely populated, particularly cities like London), mass immigration, Tories waging class war on the vulnerable, a decade of austerity and decades of failure to build council housing.

Clavinova · 20/05/2020 20:25

Oh well that’s all right then. As long as it’s Johnny Foreigner, it doesn’t matter.

Catch 22 - if they are eligible for benefits and accommodation then you encourage more homeless migrants to come to the UK. Local councils should probably do more though.

Clavinova · 20/05/2020 20:28

Not just London -

BBC 2018 "An estimated 29,000 people are homeless in and around Paris - up to 8,000 are thought to sleep rough on the French capital's streets."

user1471565182 · 20/05/2020 20:51

So have the tories increased immigration by 160%? because thats how much homelessness has risen in some areas

PuttingoutthefirewithGasoline · 20/05/2020 20:53

Corybn would be on the side of the virus, attacking awful humans for wanting to stop its spread and kill it.

Alsohuman · 20/05/2020 20:56

I thought getting through a couple of pages without the C word was too good to be true. Turns out I was right.

Soen · 20/05/2020 20:58

What the fuck are you Gasoline? The aforementioned gasoline. If this is the level of debate, I think I'm on the side of the virus too.

Republic of Ireland - SEP 2019

"Number of homeless families in Ireland up 1,000% since 2011, charity reveals."

user1471565182 · 20/05/2020 21:19

Are you going to answer the question?

arickitupyourpompom · 20/05/2020 21:19

Nope

Soen · 20/05/2020 22:00

Clavinova - it says nothing in that article about Ireland about immigration. It says the solution is using public land and having more affordable rents and social housing.

Not sure why you posted that article wrt immigration.

Clavinova · 21/05/2020 10:16

My post was just an example of other countries having similar problems with rising homelessness - it's not a uniquely Tory government problem.

Germany's homeless problem is linked to immigration -
"150 percent rise in number of homeless since 2014"

LivingOnAnIsland · 21/05/2020 10:18

Nope, absolutely no regrets whatsoever.

KenDodd · 21/05/2020 16:06

Well those leaders have also failed on this then haven't they? Just as the Tory party have failed to prevent homelessness.

KenDodd · 21/05/2020 16:08

Actually in the case of the Tories it's not just failed to prevent homelessness, they have actually INCREASED it under their leadership.

CendrillonSings · 21/05/2020 16:38

What exactly are are they supposed to do? Give them all free houses a la Corbyn?

weepingwillow22 · 21/05/2020 16:50

Housing benefit changes have been a key factor in the rise of homelessness as well as housing supply and affordability. Other factors which are directly linked to tory policies are

The closure of hostels.
Reduced access to support and social care services,in part due to cuts in local authority budgets.
Lack of availability and co-ordination of delivery of services, for example around housing, substance abuse and mental health.

canigooutyet · 21/05/2020 17:11

Don't be silly. All they were having trying to do was help people.

And they did, just not in the way that decent people wanted, or still want.

Wonder if they would offer their loyalty if he had the balls and say - I fucked up. We as the party in charge fucked up.

And don't MP's usually leave when they aren't happy with what their party represents? Sometimes defect to other sides?

It's criminal. Let's just close down the legal system and open the prison doors. Of course, if they've managed to get past the self-isolation stage. Although might be safer inside. If big man thinks you're one of them, he will want to come and shake your hands and talk about how fabulous everything is. Haha, yeah I know, many would pay anything to shake his hand without his peeps around.

Big man said Stay Alert. Still eyes wide closed.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 17:16

I see there’s been a U turn on the NHS premium for NHS and care staff. Maybe Johnson really has had a Damascene conversion. Bet Patel’s spitting nails.

canigooutyet · 21/05/2020 17:21

Bedroom tax that was a great plan.
They rejected the more sensible approach of it only applying to those who refuse to downside simply because. You know because peoples lives are different. We aren't robots all programmed to have the same existence. How dull and boring life would be.

HeIenaDove · 21/05/2020 19:36

@CendrillonSings There is no such thing as a free house. People pay rent or a mortgage

HeIenaDove · 21/05/2020 19:42

@Alsohuman I suspect this might at least be part of the reason behind Allison Pearsons Damascene conversion. You usually find that happens when it affects one of their own.

"My 24-yr-old has been paying National Insurance for two years. After losing job due to corona, inquired about Jobseekers’ Allowance. But can’t claim because needs to have been paying NI longer.
What happens to kids without homes & supportive parents?"

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 19:50

Wow, the lack of self awareness is scary @HeIenaDove. Bet her “concern” doesn’t last long.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 21/05/2020 21:05

Well OP I guess this answers your question.
Donald Trump once said that he could run amok with a gun on 5th Avenue and get away with it. Bojo has done far far worse than this with it's looking like 50,000+ dead, and yet ...
We are dealing with folks who pick up their daily dose of right wing bile over breakfast and spend their lives wailing 'what about meeeeeee?'
Oh and engaging in whataboutery of the highest order. People are twats. Sorry OP but you really can't educate pork.

Almost immediately after your quoted passage your link states;

Non-UK nationals -
"In London the increase in non-UK nationals sleeping rough has been a large component of the total increase in rough sleeping. This increase is likely linked to restrictions that came into effect in 2014 relating to migrants’ access to benefits, including housing related benefits."
