To not want my child to return to a school full of reluctant teachers

Even if the Government endorses school reopening, who would want to send their child into an environment where the teachers clearly do not want them there ?

Avoidingrealhumans* would you rather your child's teacher wasn't honest with you? Would you rather they didnt explain what the reality of school will be like?

then I get communications from the school making me doubt myself and feel bad

Oh dear. Poor you. Possibly, there are more important issues at stake here.

RickOShay · 15/05/2020 22:41

I think you said it was teachers posting the flowers. It’s not just teachers who think that the schools opening is too soon.

You do realise that the vast majority of teachers have been going in to work regularly to look after key worker and vulnerable children.
I’m not getting the vibe that teachers are reluctant to go in exactly.
Some are concerned but that’s partly because the unions are doing their level best to scare them. The leader of the biggest union is basically a Marxist who is desperate to undermine the government.
Not saying they don’t have some valid concerns but there is more than a bit of politics at play too.

IndecentFeminist · 15/05/2020 22:43

The flowers are a childish attempt to derail conversations. Because yes, it can get annoying when teacher bashing seems to be a hobby, but apparently that means that no-one is allowed to discuss.

In my school the majority of the staff are 45+. So many of them are nervous, understandably. But we're trying our best to figure it out as a team. As a parent I am confident sending my kids to school as and when, but I'll support my colleagues with genuine fears in whatever path they decide on. I do feel that there is a bit of defeatist thinking going on, and that there seems to be an attitude of 'won't happen' as against 'this is happening, let's do our best'.

CallmeAngelina · 15/05/2020 22:43

quite honestly it generates more bad feelings about teachers.

Doesn't take much. But come on, pile on in. Join the club.

Experimenopause · 15/05/2020 22:46

I think by the time they get back to their teachers, you will have done the job of teaching them petty stuff already.

Sometimeswinning · 15/05/2020 22:47

They are already having the key worker children there who come with a higher risk. I'm a carer. My workplace is up and running. I do, however, agree it is too early and will not be sending mine in. I did look at the pros and cons before I made my decision. Glad I didnt ask on here!

CallmeAngelina · 15/05/2020 22:48

I love my job. I didn't want Covid-19 and am horrified at the lives we're currently leading. I want nothing more than to go back to my lovely class of 8-9 year olds and have fun teaching them in the best term of the year in this glorious weather.
But that's not going to happen; it CAN'T happen. Because of this fucking virus that is rampaging the world and causing massive pain, suffering and disruption to tens of millions of people.
Do I want to return to work? Yes, of course.
Would I be happy to see my sweet children if we did? Yes, of course.
Do I think schools should open at the moment? HELL NO!!!

If you were to read mn, the teachers are always reluctant. Imo, no one should force teachers to go to work if they don’t want to but they should be dismiss if they don’t want to/ are incapable of doing the job they are paid to do.

The flowers are very childish.

However, YABU op.

Wendyhaverford · 15/05/2020 22:56

Teachers aren't "reluctant".
Are you confident about sending them back?
The teachers aren't going to victimise your kids. They'll just get on with it.

Sparklesocks · 15/05/2020 22:58

I think the tone of the OP is unfair. Teachers have legitimate concerns about returning to school because of covid19 and the fact it hasn’t been contained yet, and the unions have been backed by the BMA. This doesn’t mean they ‘don’t want’ the children there, they are just as concerned about the kids as they are themselves (if not more) which is where their hesitations stem from.

Don’t send them back then. HTH

Biscuitbiscuits · 15/05/2020 23:00

I don't think a single teacher in the country is "reluctant to teach".

Perhaps OP would like to rephrase.

I’m an early years teacher. I can’t wait to see my little ones again. Seeing them grow, as little people, during the year they are with me is an honour.
However, the guidelines we have been given are as frightening as the virus itself. I know the structure we will need to put in place are detrimental to the socail development and characteristics of learning at this young age. We run the real risk of hindering future learning. It goes against everything we stand for.
We raise this as an issue and ask for solutions so we can best serve our children and families, but we get continually ignored, and accused of being lazy.
We also have a lot of grandparents and pregnant mothers collecting children who I don’t want put at risk.

CallmeAngelina · 15/05/2020 23:01

CayrolBaaaskin Have you missed the fact that the vast majority of teachers have been continuing to work since Lockdown began?
