To not want my child to return to a school full of reluctant teachers

Heldupwithscaffolding · 15/05/2020 22:01

Even if the Government endorses school reopening, who would want to send their child into an environment where the teachers clearly do not want them there ?

Why anyone would be so keen to send their children back when we can't be sure it's safe, I really don't know. Of course teachers are reluctant, it is too soon.

TSSDNCOP · 15/05/2020 23:20

I've spent all day talking to teachers at our school. And the support staff. They all want to go back.

CayrolBaaaskin · 15/05/2020 23:20

@ScorpionQueen - what is your basis for saying it’s unsafe?

echt · 15/05/2020 23:20

And providing a daily worksheet is not really all I expect from my child’s teacher.

So what have you done about it?

LolaSmiles · 15/05/2020 23:21

There's teachers being reluctant to see their students who they enjoy teaching and teachers reluctant to open schools fully until there's a coherent and sensible plan that prioritises everyone's safety.

Having negative opinions about government policy does not equal negativity towards students.

@CayrolBaaaskin - do you never read the responses about the work we are doing? I do worry about your comprehension skills if we keep having the same exchange

Sparklesocks · 15/05/2020 23:21

@CayrolBaaaskin maybe should look into homeschooling your kids permanently? Clearly you’re an expert and would do a superior better job to those pesky, money grabbing charlatans who want to stay home and watch homes under the hammer.

Pomegranatepompom · 15/05/2020 23:21

Yes you're right, flowers are better than swearing, I tend to ignore any posters who swear.

There was a pp on another thread who posted a beautiful pattern, I was quite envious of their IT skills.

Derails thread - sorry.

Dieu · 15/05/2020 23:22

You really have to give teachers more credit than this.

CallmeAngelina · 15/05/2020 23:22

You didn't say "teaching," you said "working." If I'm in school with children at the moment, I'm technically working, even if it doesn't look much like my usual job because, you know, fucking COVID!!

This has been said a million times on here already in the last few weeks but I'll say it again. If YOU have a problem with what YOUR child's teacher has set for THEM, then get off your arse and contact the school concerned and sort it out. Don't come on here and insult hundreds of other teachers who are doing their level best to provide meaningful and accessible work for their pupils. Both on the school premises and from home.

SpangledPandemonium · 15/05/2020 23:22

I can take criticism, which is just as well as I will get it either way. If we open, some parents and some staff will be unhappy. If we don't, some parents and some staff will be unhappy.

CayrolBaaaskin · 15/05/2020 23:22

@echt - what difference does that make. I was responding to Angelina claiming that teachers are working as usual. They’re not.

Kwality · 15/05/2020 23:22

Teachers do a tough job. I hope no-one doubts that.
The problem is that he shambolic government policy and guidance puts so many people in a shitty position, and pits us against each other.
A pp referred to other workplaces only being open if they can comply with social distancing requirements. That really isn’t the case. There are huge numbers of other people also being put in similar predicaments. I am a key worker- not in a field that would every generate sympathy or clapping, but nonetheless I have no choice but to mingle with others in a manner entirely incompatible with everything we are being told to do.
I have thus far been given some flexibility as my children are at home. Now the government says to send them to school and nursery. Do you think my (non unionised) employment will continue to give me flexibility? No. So I have no choice but to send my children in.

It’s not what I want. It’s not what teachers want. But it is what the government has decided should happen. I can’t afford to lose my job.
So whilst it is obviously not what teachers want, and I don’t wish to encourage a race to the bottom, you are really not the only ones. Many of us are equally or similarly affected. The blame lies not with parents or teachers but the government, for setting out policies that few working environments can actually comply with, but that passes the buck to the individuals who have no choice but to do their best.

echt · 15/05/2020 23:22

Teachers jobs are to teach children in the schools

Not at the moment, they're not. Do try to keep up with events.

SallyLovesCheese · 15/05/2020 23:23

CayrolBaaaskin

The Audiology team at my local hospital are not currently doing audiograms. I had an appointment in April but it was cancelled.

Am I wondering what all the audiologists are doing? Yes!

Do I think they're being paid for doing nothing? No!

Have I started a thread ot even posted on MN complaining that they're obviously not doing their jobs at the moment? No!

Are you complaining about all the NHS staff who've been redeployed during this crisis? Or just think that teachers are the only profession currently doing something a bit different from their normal role at this time?

Can't be mad about teachers if you're not mad about the others, can you?

Goodness, is that all you’ve been getting?

What have the school said when you’ve contacted them to say you’d like more work?

CallmeAngelina · 15/05/2020 23:26

I was responding to Angelina claiming that teachers are working as usual.
Where did I say we were working "as usual?"

ScorpionQueen · 15/05/2020 23:26

I don't need to prove it's unsafe. Unless there is clear scientific evidence that it is safe for children and staff I won't be sending my children in.

ElizabethG81 · 15/05/2020 23:27

The flowers are a pathetic attempt to shut down conversation and not face any challenge. What has shocked me most about the reaction from a lot of teachers on here is how rigid their thinking is. "Can't do that", "impossible", "have you ever beeeeen in a school, you idiot?" I'd expect teachers to have a little more creativity rather than a "computer says no" attitude.

Teachers are employed to teach pupils in schools. Nurses are employed to work in hospitals/health centres, etc. Cashiers are employed to work in supermarkets. Unless they are specifically vulnerable I'd expect all to be in work.

It's not unreasonable for parents to want more for their children than a few links to YouTube videos.

Flowers
CallmeAngelina · 15/05/2020 23:29

Elizabeth, Not another one! For fuck's sake read the thread. Or one of the millions of others on here when others have made the similar point and had it explained very clearly to them why they are wrong.

RickOShay · 15/05/2020 23:30

I don’t think the flowers are pathetic.
I do think it’s pathetic that people seems to be determined to undermine their children’s teachers.

PatButchersEarring · 15/05/2020 23:30

Kwality: brilliant post that shines a light on the realities for many. ❤

DippyAvocado · 15/05/2020 23:30

CayrolBaaskin you have only your own experience to draw on. Is your child in at the moment as a key worker child? If not, how do you have any idea what they are doing? We are teaching the children we have in , difficult as it is with a complete mix of ages. If you have an issue with what your school is doing, you need to take it up with them. Follow the complaints procedure if you want to complain. But how dare you slander the entire profession when there are those of us that have been working our backsides off trying to meet the needs of our pupils in a way we never expected to, with the crappiest of school technology and with zero guidance about how best to do it.

Whatever way we find of working through this experience, there are people who moan. Too much work, not enough work, too much online, not enough online. I want my child's teacher to call every day, why does my child's teacher keep bothering me by calling me?

Give it a rest with the complaining threads about schools, there must be 50 a day at least. Find something else to do. Moaning endlessly on MN is not going to change anything about what your school is doing.
