To feel sorry for these babies

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/may/14/surrogates-baby-coronavirus-lockdown-parents-surrogacy?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

The tone of the article seems to just be - oh what a shame that covid happened and this has meant surrogate babies can’t get to their intended parents. Absolutely no concern for firstly the trauma to the babies leaving the caregiver they are bonded with after who knows how long and secondly no acknowledgement that perhaps allowing people to go to other countries and essentially hire women’s bodies and buy babies might have some downsides for both the women and the babies involved.

I'm not sure which thread I saw it on.

Might be this one Fire

Ukraine surrogacy "trade" www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3909725-Ukraine-surrogacy-trade

But there was one report I think saying the parents had their newborn experiences 'ruined' and they can't show the baby off to grandparents etc. Someone said that when a baby can't be with it's mother, due to health difficulties, that's not what a mother thinks about. Many thing will run through her head but having her newborn experiences 'ruined' was not one of them.

(To be fair it might have been Sophie Beresiner in The Times, I'm getting mixed up)

Sorry to the poster who made that point better than I did. It was a good point well made!

I sure some babies will be rejected as they are too old by the time the parents arrive.

If you don't want to see commercial surrogacy come to the UK please download this letter and send it to your MP. Copy in Mat Hancock if you can. It takes hardly any time at all.

Make no mistake, a LOT of behind the scenes lobbying has been going on to bring California style surrogacy law to the UK and the Law Commission are currently working on their proposals.

If these proposals go ahead the UK will become an international surrogacy destination. And the NHS and UK taxpayer will be funding it. Even if you are not sure about surrogacy I think you can be sure that the NHS shouldn't be funding an international baby trade.

Just found this template letter on the Law Commission Proposals.

Nordic Model Now did amazing work on the consultation document last year and they are so on it, it's dated yesterday.

Really cracking letter I thought. Covers so much. I'll be sending this to my MP.

The situation in the Ukraine is horrific. It should shine a light on this abhorrent trade.

People like Plan can argue until the cows come home but I cannot and will never accept any justification for the buying/renting of women’s bodies and the selling of human babies. It’s sickening.

Would it be okay to sell a 6 week old baby? How about a six month old? Where is an acceptable line drawn?

OhHolyJesus · 19/05/2020 13:00

Here is a 7 week old Mothering that will probably be about 5 months old, almost ready to wean to solids, by the time the parents are permitted to travel.

The report talks about the parents being stranded, not the baby boy.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-52706228

""We never met our surrogate, the clinic managed the relationship and we don't really know much about the specifics. We do know that her fees were paid, of course," says José."

So after Manuel was born 10 days early the SM asked to be in touch via WhatsApp. So it was not permitted during the pregnancy but after is ok? Also I understand that surrogacy isn't illegal in Argentina but it isn't regulated, so why travel so far, could it be the bargain deals they get that drew them to this far away country? They say half of the amount went to the SM but they don't know that for sure.

As a Dr, Jose treats Covid patients and they both aren't allowed time off, but that's ok right, the baby is getting his 'basic needs' met.

It's terrible, I think back to early days with my babies. These children are going to be institutionalised before they can even sit up and chew on a rusk. And it won't be long before they are outgrowing those rows of cribs. I think I moved Dad into her cot around eight weeks, she would spend time on the floor playing with her baby gym or going into a bouncy chair and being chatted to at meal times.

I'm sick of seeing reports focusing on the tragedy for the parents who can't get their babies. Why are none of the news reports seeing the wholescale humanitarian crisis this represents for the babies and the shocking exploitation of a generation of Ukrainian women?

threesecrets · 19/05/2020 23:04

Surrogacy is horrible. I want, I get attitude to farming a baby

threesecrets · 19/05/2020 23:09

@andratuttobene it's shouldn't be about what a childless woman 'wants', it should be about what is morally and ethically correct.

FannyCann · 19/05/2020 23:32

Also, from that article @OhHolyJesus the Swedish couple had been able to fly in thanks to an anonymous donor paying for a private jet. But Sweden has banned surrogacy. I can't remember precisely the details but I'm sure there was some sort of attempt to ban people going abroad for it too.
When people arrive home with a baby, even in countries where surrogacy is banned, judges just seem to look at the baby put the child's best interests first roll over and sign off any necessary paperwork. It's ridiculous. Why aren't they prosecuted for people trafficking? Authorities don't necessarily have to remove the baby, of course child welfare should be the primary consideration. But if people knew they would be prosecuted for people trafficking, maybe get a criminal record or a big fine, they would think twice before heading off overseas to flash wodges of cash in their determination to get what they want. It would also help make surrogacy tourism socially unacceptable.

Somebody is doing something

FannyCann · 19/06/2020 22:27

We can but hope @OhHolyJesus

This is wholesale people trafficking.
Really laid bare in this article. So many horrors I'd be writing a book if I picked it all apart.

Letting a woman who had ended up in ICU be a surrogate mother again.
Mixing up embryos.
Moving pregnant mothers abroad to give birth to facilitate passports and visas.
