Death by M&S Ready Meals

BluSky5 · 13/05/2020 19:43

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

It is unlikely to make you sick. Why would it unless you have allergies or similar to what's in it?

It's unusual circumstances. You say it's not all the time. So add some veg, rather than chips and it'll be ok.

Most people, to be fair, don't eat ready meals 3 times a day normally anyway.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 14/05/2020 08:25

you chose it - you may not feel up to cooking, but M&S do have healthier options.
With their dine in deals, I often get chicken that's already in a tray ready to shove in the oven. and those yummy stacks of profiteroles for desert

Falafellygood · 14/05/2020 08:27

This thread has been terrifically entertaining Grin

OP, have some porridge with fruit for breakfast, tuna and salad for lunch, one of these one dinner with vegetables and call it good.

It won't harm to have a ready meal occasionally, unless you live off family size bars of chocolate for breakfast and dominoes for lunch on top of it.

It won't make you ill or fat Hmm

LizzyButton · 14/05/2020 08:28

Such great things promoted / dissed on this thread I want to try most of them now. However, I'm stuck in a M&S Prawn Bhuna loop and can't escape.

derxa · 14/05/2020 08:37

Hilarious. I'm off to microwave a sausage and mash ready meal from the Coop. I'd rather have M and S pie with mash and extra salt.

PolaDeVeboise · 14/05/2020 08:55

Can I just say I love you @MrsTerryPratchett? I get regular comments of 'do you want some chips with that salt', but don't care. My BP has always been 'normal', even during both pregnancies.

Ragwort · 14/05/2020 09:00

Where is the OP? Hope she hasn’t died after eating her meal ......

So much angst on this thread about food, surely there is a balance between granola (too much have salt?) and steamed fish or a full fry up and pie and chips (I know which I prefer thought Grin).

Sforsh49 · 14/05/2020 09:01

If OP was from Wigan she would have had that pie on a barmcake (bread roll) which would be generously buttered, with salted butter. Mmmmm Pie Barm. She's never lived. Ooh look it's time for breakfast, anyone got any leftover pie?

RomaineCalm · 14/05/2020 09:18

Washed down with a 'Wigan Cocktail' @Sforsh49 Wink

Nanny0gg · 14/05/2020 09:19

I love their roast dinners

LaurieMarlow · 14/05/2020 09:23

'Wigan Cocktail'

Good god, is this a thing? I haven’t lived. Grin

Take me to Wigan ...

myusernamewastakenbyme · 14/05/2020 09:24

I loathe cooking...i'd happily live on ready meals...especially m&s ready meals.

Sforsh49 · 14/05/2020 09:53

Oh yes @romainecalm I left the motherland over ten years ago. Take me back to Harry's Bar and the annual pie eating competition. Can take a girl out of Wigan........

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/05/2020 10:16

What exactly were you expecting when you bought a steak pie with all-butter pastry? Sounds a very odd choice anyway for someone who’s evidently uptight about fat, salt and food in general.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 14/05/2020 10:19

This thread is fucking mental.

Death by M&S indeed, they do a whole range of ready meals and prepared meat/veg/salad yet OP you decided to by the most calorie laden and then moan about it? You could of opted to buy the lower calorie range or prepared meat and veg but you didn’t.

TheRoyallingStones · 14/05/2020 11:03

Love a pie barm! But it surely should be the wonderfully vague “meat and potato pie” with mysterious grey mushy filling Wink OP would no doubt have a heart attack if she so much as looked at one of those

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 14/05/2020 11:37

Never mind the pie, how and why on earth is the OP's child doing mock exams when all exams have been cancelled this year?

MaybeNew · 14/05/2020 11:52

I’m beginning to think that stupidity and virtue signalling are contagious atm. Ready meals are not healthy, what a shock. Food is necessary to sustain life and if you balance your intake out well on average, then you should be fine. And stop demonising food OP, it’s bad for your mental health.

MangoFeverDream · 14/05/2020 12:10

Now I want to know. Did OP eat it? Is she still among the living or did she have a literal stroke from the pie? Can her surviving family sue M&S?

LorraineBelly · 14/05/2020 12:13

She probably ate it all in one go.

Thisismytimetoshine · 14/05/2020 12:28

How are you getting on, op? Feeling any better?

WisteriaHysteria · 14/05/2020 13:12

Peak MN. Steak Pie with All-Butter Pastry in Fat and Salt Shocker.

Looking forward to seeing this on @mumsnetmadness on twitter.

And as for those smugly saying they never cook with salt - your cooking must be bland as fuck. Butter and salt is what makes things taste nice.

midnightstar66 · 14/05/2020 14:01

It doesn’t necessarily make you a bad parent as it was clearly a mistake as you were ill. But to give supermarket ready meals to your DC is very irresponsible IMO.

Grin Anyone would think OP had ignored her child playing on train tracks or something with that reaction
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 14/05/2020 14:13

leftover pie

sorry, I don't understand that concept -how would anyone end up with leftover pie?
Especially M&S leftover pie.

ShaniaPayne · 14/05/2020 14:17

Someone really should suggest this for the next James Bond flim. The evil baddie has James trapped in his underground lair with 1500 M&S steak pies, one Colin the Caterpillar cake, and a microwave.

And there is no way out, Meestair Bond, mwah hah hah hah...
