Death by M&S Ready Meals

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

Your last post is so weird, op. You chose to buy the pie Confused

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/05/2020 18:03

Or you just let people decide what they eat BluSky5 and you concentrate on what you eat? I’m surprised someone who is so anti ‘unhealthy’ food that a) you didn’t realise that a steak pie with all butter pastry would probably be quite high in fat and salt and b) you didn’t check the nutritional content before you bought it.
You live and you learn eh?

Willow2017 · 15/05/2020 18:07

It doesn’t necessarily make you a bad parent as it was clearly a mistake as you were ill. But to give supermarket ready meals to your DC is very irresponsible IMO.
But you have checked the labels and not used them so no harm done. Suggest you donate to a food bank or similar.

This is a joke right?

If not...
Of for gods sake really? Its not good enough for your kids but hey give it to the undeserving poor they wont care about unhealthy eating as much as we do? Let them eat 'terrible food' and be grateful for it!
A couple of ready meals once in a while wont do op or her kids a bit of harm. Get a grip.

BeetrootRocks · 15/05/2020 18:09

?

Are people allowed to make pastry with butter at home?

Plus bacon tastes shite and doesn't last like it used to since they reduced the salt content.

What about samphire or oysters. Are they ok? Vv salty.

This threat serves as a warning against salt, fat, and the perils of drinking in the daytime.

Oysterbabe · 15/05/2020 19:25

I’m looking forward to tasty pies that are lower in all the crap that’s for sale at the moment.

I've got a tasty pie in one hand and low fat and low salt in the other. However hard I try I just can't bring these hands together.

PickAChew · 15/05/2020 20:50

I had fish and chips for tea. It would not been nearly as good had it not been fried in beef dripping and blathered in salt and vinegar.

Steak pie without the pie is just steak, btw.

GabsAlot · 15/05/2020 21:38

Ffs im glad youre not in charge of our food op how dull

FOJN · 15/05/2020 22:08

I can't quit believe you are serious OP. You seem to have written off an entire meal as potentially lethal on the basis of one component, that really isn't the way to plan a healthy diet. If you had a cheese salad would you determine it's nutritional value on the cheese or the salad ingredients, neither would make a healthy meal on their own.
It sounds like you have divided the pie between 3 rather than the 2 it was intended for and then added vegetables so unless you are serving apple pie and clotted cream for dessert I can't see why you're so worried about it.
You are welcome to an austere diet but please don't think other people want to be so anxious about food.

BluSky5 · 15/05/2020 22:25

‘You are welcome to an austere diet but please don't think other people want to be so anxious about food.’

I was having an anxious time with Coronavirus not food. I love food!

Lockdown on sugar, lockdown on salt, lockdown on fat

Wtf is wrong with salt? You know that the Japanese have the highest intake of salt in the world? Yet their diet is actually considered quite healthy.

And why do you cook without salt?

midnightstar66 · 16/05/2020 06:50

Your updates are bizarre OP do you think you can actually catch or have a relapse of covid 19 from an M&S pie?

kitschplease · 16/05/2020 07:42

What a way to go though!

LaurieMarlow · 16/05/2020 08:14

I was having an anxious time with Coronavirus not food.

So you think you’ll relapse because of steak pie?

From your OP ... It will make us sick again.

You know that fat and salt consumption don’t cause CV, right?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/05/2020 10:30

Well the pie is in the oven! We’re having it with green beans and broccoli. I can cope with that as a one off...

Wooooooo live pie thread! How come we didn't get a bite by bite commentary? Anyway, the all important question... HOW WAS IT?

BluSky5 · 16/05/2020 10:41

Well it was actually a very good pie and perfect with a huge pile of greens. There was a bit of an oil slick underneath it but I popped it on some kitchen paper to soak it up.

Great if you’re trying to regain weight after Coronavirus but not for middle aged weight maintenance. I’d probably have to cut right back for the rest of the week and I’d rather not have to do that so I probably won’t get it again.

OP posts:
Oysterbabe · 16/05/2020 10:43

It was less than 700 calories. Cut right back for the rest of the week? Give over.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 16/05/2020 10:47

God, the eating issues on MN are fascinating

Drivingdownthe101 · 16/05/2020 10:49

Cut back for the rest of the week? Because of one 700 calorie pie?
The mind boggles.

midnightstar66 · 16/05/2020 10:49

You do not have to cut back for an entire week because of one higher calorie meal you won't suddenly pile on ponds from one slice of pie . You claim to not have food anxiety but your posts suggest otherwise. I thought it was the salt that was a problem anyway?

PurpleDaisies · 16/05/2020 10:55

It doesn’t sound like you’ve got a very healthy relationship with food if you think you need to cut back for a whole week after eating a pie.

Clevs · 16/05/2020 10:55

I bought an M&S 'best ever' prawn sandwich the other day. Whilst I was eating it I was looking at the packet and it had 43% of the recommended amount of salt in it. That's nearly half my allowance just in a sandwich! 😳

GrumpiestOldWoman · 16/05/2020 11:02

But clevs it was probably also nearly half your meal for the day...

Hoggleludo · 16/05/2020 11:04

It's a ready meal

They are all crap!

But it's only like 3?!?
