Death by M&S Ready Meals

BluSky5 · 13/05/2020 19:43

Well I’ve been isolating at home with my teenagers as myself and my eldest have had Coronavirus. I realised that neither of us would be well enough to cook and the other teenager has mock exams.

As there were no supermarket delivery slots I decided to order some ready meals from M&S thinking it would be quality food and help us recover.

However I was really shocked at the salt sugar and fat content. We can’t possibly eat this. It will make us sick again. It cost a fortune. I realise it was probably a bit stupid of me at the time but I wasn’t well and wasn’t thinking properly. My mouth feels like sandpaper at the very thought of all that salt being poured into it. Am I being unreasonable?

Oh ffs OP. Of course what you bought wasn’t a healthy meal. Are you planning to never cook again and live off these? Then sure, be AGHAST, or order something else. Short term? Pretty sure you’ll all live and not get covid19 again because of three unhealthy meals. Order some plain frozen fish and some veg. Same cooking effort, without the horrified surprise that A PIE isn’t a health food.

user1473878824 · 14/05/2020 03:33

Also no, I’m not sure anyone lives off M&S ready meals but maybe some people live off other ones. FETCH ME MY SALTS?

MangoFeverDream · 14/05/2020 04:50

The science in salt intake isn’t even all that strong. In some people, there is a relationship between salt intake and high blood pressure but it isn’t so simple in the majority.

If you don’t actually suffer from hbp, you shouldn’t worry about it. I eat loads of salt (my home cooked meals always use copious amounts) and don’t suffer ill effects. In fact I have low blood pressure to the point of blacking out when I stand up too fast on a hot day 😓

And ffs, don’t cook without salt! Imagine how much better everything will taste once you start using it like a normal home cook.

RapunzelsBuzzcut · 14/05/2020 05:19

When I make fish pie, I don’t spend the next two hours gasping for a drink.

This is why you should never take a ready made fish pie into the Sahara.

Surely this is basic common knowledge?

ItsLateHumpty · 14/05/2020 05:27

Do people eat like this 3 times a day

Umm just checking OP, this isn’t one days meals.... fish pie for breakfast, lasagna for lunch, and steak pie for dinner, cos if it is, then yes you might have a problem.

Otherwise nope, you’ll all be fine. Red wine counteracts salt and fat anyway, honest Grin

RapunzelsBuzzcut · 14/05/2020 05:29

Hooray for having POTS. Doctor-prescribed salt yum yum Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2020 05:35

Is POTS catching? Rapunzel

Oysterbabe · 14/05/2020 06:20

These are part of their premium range and aren't intended to be eaten every day. They will do you no harm at all.

GinnyStrupac · 14/05/2020 06:38

This has got me fancying a fish pie at 6.37am.

GinnyStrupac · 14/05/2020 06:39

And a glass of wine with it. Is it too early, do you think?

fuckinghellthisshit · 14/05/2020 07:04

You want the government to enforce a reduction in salt in m and S pies so you can eat them because you think salt makes c19 worse? Wtf?

ECBC · 14/05/2020 07:10

Everyone knows easy meals aren’t the healthiest. YABVU to say you won’t eat them. Not everyone can afford M&S food. Your post is very insensitive to anyone going through financial hardship at the moment

HonestOpinion10 · 14/05/2020 07:14

You chose steak pie. On what planet was this supposed to be healthy? Sure, gizzi erskin probably can make a version but realistically and traditionally its not a light healthy meal is it?

In any event you can eat it provided that everything else that passes your lips is veg for that day.

LocksMyth · 14/05/2020 07:48

Many don't even eat three times a day.
If you don't plan to eat it, please donate it to someone who would really appreciate it.
Food bank, charity, food sharing Apps, FB groups would all make use of it.

midnightstar66 · 14/05/2020 07:57

Haha favourite thread of the day and it's not even 8am. As I'm sure others have pointed out you selected from the gastro pub range. This is intended as an easy indulgent meal that people will grab on a Friday night after a busy week when they don't have the energy to cook. No one is eating it 3 times a day 7 days a week and it will not make you ill it will probably help if you've lost weight salt isn't as awful as people think. I assume you mean there wasn't much choice in this individual range? Which would all be similar on the nutrition front by its very nature anyway. I refuse to believe M&S was out of all other ready meals as ready meals is what they do. They have a better range than Iceland. Autocorrect changed gastro to Castro and I was very tempted to leave it. It seemed quite fitting for the danger expected of the meal by op Grin

DominaShantotto · 14/05/2020 07:58

Who ate all the pies... who ate all the pies...

Because the pies cause the corona innit

Oblomov20 · 14/05/2020 08:07

Wow. They are shockingly poor, salt and saturates, aren't they?
I had no idea! Blush

rslsys · 14/05/2020 08:09

So if you eat in a pub or a restaurant (remember that?). How many of them have fat/salt/sugar content listed on their menus? Exactly - treat an M&S ready meal as you would a meal out.
You could eat out for a couple of weeks on holiday (once again, remember those?) and not be returned home in a body bag.

Streetpartyless · 14/05/2020 08:11

OP, if you can't get a supermarket delivery slot try Iceland. They release new slots daily at 11am and the dates they offer are much closer to the current day than the other supermarkets. Some slots are next day, others 3 or 4 days away. Free delivery if you spend over £35. Once you get your slot you have an hour to complete your order so might be worth having a browe and filling your basket first.

I know Iceland is full of cheap and not very cheerful ready meals and highly processed food (not my normal shop of choice either), but you can also get a limited range of basic fruit, veg, milk, cheese, meat, pasta, wholemeal bread, snacks, cereal etc to keep everyone going until you feel better.

Hope you all recover soon!

ARosebyAnotherName · 14/05/2020 08:13

It doesn’t necessarily make you a bad parent as it was clearly a mistake as you were ill. But to give supermarket ready meals to your DC is very irresponsible IMO.
But you have checked the labels and not used them so no harm done. Suggest you donate to a food bank or similar.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/05/2020 08:13

Seriously Oblomov? Confused

It's a pie that boasts about all butter pastry (saturated fat) filled with red meat (saturated fat).

If it wasn't high in those things, I'd be worried I was getting diddled on the luxury ingredients that I was paying extra for and they'd made the pastry with some vegetable fat shite.

As for the salt, it's just over 2 g, when the daily recommended maximum is 6 g, so fine as part of a main meal assuming the pie is served with plain veg and the rest of the day's food is lower salt. Better not have a ham or cheese sandwich and some crisps for lunch.

Itwasntme1 · 14/05/2020 08:14

Op as a nurse I am sure you realise that a few high fat meals won’t make you ill as long as they are part of a usually balanced diet.

Take a breath, enjoy the food then return to your normal healthy eating plan.

Life is too short to be this uptight😊

TimeWastingButFun · 14/05/2020 08:18

There is so much more salt in those kind of meals, we've had them occasionally and you can really taste it.

user1484 · 14/05/2020 08:18

What next ‘I ordered Chinese for dinner and have since found out their chicken is not free range’?

QuixoticQuokka · 14/05/2020 08:19

A pie is not really a meal, you would have veg with it, quick steamed veg or salad for something easy. I ignore the colour scheme for fat content, and look at sugar and the ingredients instead. It's outdated, nothing wrong with butter!
