To think seeing family in their garden is safer?

So we can see one member of another household outside 2m apart... surrounded by other strangers 2m apart where we don’t know where they’ve been/who they’ve seen, but we can’t social distance in our family’s garden where we know they’ve been isolating/only going to the shops? Is this not ridiculous?

I've been reading through the new guidance and I don't think it says you can't meet in the garden. It says you can't visit in their home, and that you must be outside. So I for one shall be meeting my one person, 2m away, in their garden!

I feel this is an example of people stretching the guidance again. Johnson said in the briefing to stay in family groups. He then said it would be ok if you met someone to chat at 2m in some other info, though Raab seems to think it’s 2.
It was never said that people now have a right to meet one person each deliberately!

Have I misunderstood then?

It’s very hard to tell as, despite everyone trying to convince us it was perfectly clear, it wasn’t. In the speech he definitely said stay in household groups in parks. Now there’s some odd mess up between him and Raab about hypothetical parents in the park.
I’m totally confused and glad I live in Wales so it doesn’t matter.

People may exercise outside as many times each day as they wish. For example, this would include angling and tennis. You will still not be able to use areas like playgrounds, outdoor gyms or ticketed outdoor leisure venues, where there is a higher risk of close contact and touching surfaces. You can only exercise with up to one person from outside your household – this means you should not play team sports, except with members of your own household.
People may drive to outdoor open spaces irrespective of distance, so long as they respect social distancing guidance while they are there, because this does not involve contact with people outside your household.^

I can't find anything where it actually says you can't see them in the garden. However I suspect they don't want to because the garden is an extension of your home. You may stay longer in a garden, or if it rains be tempted to just pop inside.

Because if you meet someone in the park in public, you are far less likely to end up having an impulse touch, accidentally but understandably getting closer, drinking a cup of tea that the other person then carries back to the sink, staying for dinner or sheltering inside (even at a distance) if it pelts with rain for a minute..

None of us would intend to do any of these things, but faced with a sobbing adult child, for example, it would be painfully hard for most parents not to reach out. Apes are really not designed for social distancing!

Is it because you would linger in the garden whereas you pass by strangers quickly when out say in the supermarket?

Just watching BBC news and they are reporting that you are allowed to meet one person. They didn’t specify in what way, or whether each person in each household can meet one person, probably because Johnson doesn’t have enough of a grasp of detail to have thought that one through.
It’s all a load of bollocks I’m afraid, unclear and he’ll blame you (people in England) When the infection rate goes up.

@vodka, no you have not misunderstood, and yes, @cardibach the new guidance absolutely does say that you may meet 1 other person from outside your household in a public place as long as you keep a 2 meter distance.

Dominic Raab said this morning you could meet two people (for example both your parents) as long as you stayed 2 meters away, but the government issued clarification a couple of hours later to say no, that was wrong. It is only 1 person.

Re meeting in the garden: that is specifically forbidden. It was explained later that you might want to use the loo...which would mean going inside, and also no one would be able to see that you were always 2 meters apart.

Make of that what you will.

This is what I mean. I read it as this is what me MAY be able to do once in Step 2. But currently we are in step 1.

He has literally just been on tv answering questions and clearly stated you CAN see one person outside your household if you practice social distancing.

BiggestJulie I’ve acknowledged that it is there. But it seems there’s still lack of clarity about from when. Also does it mean everyone can meet one other person? The webs of contact there are horrible to contemplate... I know risk is low outdoors and at 2m, but if everyone is doing it that rare event will happen a significant number of times.

The people I've seen having garden gatherings have been drinking (toilet needed), spending extended times together (barbecue - takes ages) and in the case of my neighbours heading inside together when it was getting dark.
Wouldn't do any of that if you met in the park.

Yes you can. You can even play tennis with them if you wanted to.

And ditch the us and them mentality cardi. I'm in Wales too and like it or not, he's our PM too. Yes we have devolved powers but you're kidding yourself if you think we won't fall in line with this shortly.

It's really not. His statement was vague last night but the contents of that document were discussed today and are plastered all over every news outlet.
