AIBU to think lockdown must continue

I have previously posted threads about how I feel about schools and children staying at home now I have started to see more stories like this snippet taken from BBC

A mysterious illness believed to be linked to Covid-19 has killed three children in New York state, Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

The governor described the illness as a “new” syndrome that caused inflammation of blood vessels, leading to possible heart problems.

Cuomo said health authorities were reviewing 73 similar cases of children across the state.

Many of the children did not display symptoms commonly associated with Covid-19 but later tested positive for the disease or the antibodies it produces.

The three deaths may indicate the virus poses a more severe risk to young people than previously thought, Cuomo said.

Surely all those saying this virus is not dangerous to children need to start having a rethink. The Spanish Flu was dangerous to kids in its first peak and the second peak affected adults more. Lets hope this is not the same kind of thing.

@fripp I’ve seen a lot saying that exactly.

Alsohuman · 10/05/2020 18:51

To be honest I’d rather get it now than in the winter. Recovery would be a lot faster than if you got it in December.

imsooverthisdrama · 10/05/2020 18:51

Of course we need protection in the workplace and if you can wfh this should still continue.
Going back to work needs to be eased slowly and safely for all but it needs to happen.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/05/2020 18:55

I’m a teacher and can wfh. The confusion arises when people think I’m an overqualified babysitter for teenagers

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 18:57

Apparently there are 16,000 new cases a day at the moment and that needs to be down to 4,000 before the lockdown is lifted.

Who said that?

Rachie1973 · 10/05/2020 19:01

I’m 100% with @Bluntness100 on this.

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 19:06

Interview on Sky News. Am watching Boris now - looks like there is a long way to go.

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 19:13

STEP ONE “From this Weds, we want to encourage people to take more & even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise.
“You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household”

STEP TWO: “We may be in a position to begin phased reopening of shops & to get primary pupils back into schools, in stages, beg with reception, Yr 1 & Yr 6
Wants sec pupils facing exams next year will get at some time with teachers b4 hols. Rest of kids not back til after summer

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 19:14

STEP THREE: At the earliest by July - & subject to all these conditions & further scientific advice, govt hopes to re-open at least some of the hospitality industry and other public places, provided they are safe and enforce social distancing.

bobstersmum · 10/05/2020 19:22

As clear as mud!

Bluntness100 · 10/05/2020 19:29

There is a step missing from your summery Parker,

He said if you can’t work from home go to work.

He didn’t say what needs to remain closed, I imagine it’s the initial list that everyone ignored, Ie non essential shops, pubs clubs etc, but he didn’t say,

He simply said, if you can’t work from home go to work, and then gave a couple of examples,

Ethelfleda · 10/05/2020 19:32

More nuanced details to be released tomorrow.

FrippEnos · 10/05/2020 19:34

Parker231

Possibly beginning with reception, Yr 1 & Yr 6

Sec pupils facing exams next year may get at some time with teachers b4 hols.

As with so much of what he has said tonight very vague

Ethelfleda · 10/05/2020 19:35

I took it as ‘possibly’ and ‘may’ as long as the science at the time informs it.

Parker231 · 10/05/2020 19:35

Sorry Bluntness - am trying to read from Twitter. I think there are more questions than answers,

"This is not the time simply to end the lockdown this week."

Boris Johnson says while the lockdown continues, anyone who can’t work from home should be "actively encouraged to go to work" - but avoid public transport if possible.

Knucklehead101 · 10/05/2020 19:44

I'm still not quite clear why the risk of Covid 19 is worse than the risk of anything else that could possibly happen to us. As others have said, DV, social deprivation and a myriad of other things are going to kill many many more. Why is the government not more keen to protect us from these?

Mascotte · 10/05/2020 20:22

@knucklehead I don't know. It makes no sense

Maybelatte · 10/05/2020 20:36

The argument is we can’t afford further lockdown but we equally can’t afford a second peak which will reverse the good we have done up until now entirely and send us back to a stricter lockdown than ever. People don’t seem to grasp this and think it’s ok to just go visit their friends now. It isn’t, you’re an idiot.

Mascotte · 10/05/2020 20:50

@Maybelatte I can't afford further lockdown as I have no fucking income!!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 10/05/2020 20:52

I can't afford further lockdown as I have no fucking income

Quite. I keep seeing people on Facebook saying "it's too early to reopen things". It's fucking alright for them though, they either have no job anyway, work from home or run their business from home. The rest of us aren't as fortunate.

YouJustDoYou · 10/05/2020 22:15

^^THIS. FUCKING THIS, ALL OVER. it's ok for those who are happily sitting back watching the income roll in in whatever capacity, but those of us who have no job to go back to, etc- yeah, guess what? WE'RE NOT AS LUCKY AS YOU.

colouringindoors · 10/05/2020 22:17

Apart from providing childcare, is there any reason at all to get reception and yr 1 kids back in school? these are the ages when school is least important and our kids start school younger than so many other countries...

TheHoneyBadger · 11/05/2020 08:08

If you have no job you’re entitled to full universal credit. No one is being left with no money. Is your point that you can’t afford to live on UC despite child and housing elements and a basic rate that has been increased due to the pandemic?

TheHoneyBadger · 11/05/2020 08:09

And if you’ve lost your job due to covid how would opening schools change anything for you other than not having to look after your children?
