The new slogan - Stay Alert....

Alert to what? Is the virus going to break into our homes?
Listen out for someone coughing then run a mile from them.

What on earth does Stay alert actually mean?

At least Stay home made sense stay alert means nothing at all or AIBU?

Well, according to some, it means that lockdown is over. We are all safe and can go outside again. I'm not sure why they think that, but what the heck, eh?

ineedaholidaynow · 10/05/2020 17:58

@3cats it is scary that people can think that

ellanwood · 10/05/2020 18:22

Stay Alert means nothing to me. I have no idea what it means wrt the virus or how I should now modify my behaviour. Empty words. DH reckons they kept it vague on purpose to exoneratew themselves if the deths start rising.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/05/2020 18:25

I will be glad when it is 7.10, because hopefully some people will realise it is about more than just the slogan!

The average person is nowhere near as bright as the average mumsnetter

Doubtful but doubtlessly feelgood.

It’s bollocks. Reads like it’s up to you know, do what you want and when it gets worse we can blame you.

Andcake · 10/05/2020 18:58

As someone who has worked in this kind of PR messaging it sounds like they want people to go out a bit more to help the economy so wanted to stop the very black and white "stay home" but could not go with " mostly stay home" and came up with a crap meaningless phrase which sounds like we are to watch out for terrorists! It's so crap they could have done a quick research survey and found out it was meaningless. Cant wait to hear Boris explanation but can't listen live due to anxious Dc hearing too much news. We need to relax it a bit I've already heard of 2 suicides and am desperately worried about DC mental health as well as our finances.

Easilyanxious · 10/05/2020 19:58

I think it's quite obvious in meaning when going to work or out stay alert re : social distancing etc and that things aren't back to normal

EmbarrassedUser · 10/05/2020 20:15

No idea @Weallhavevalidopinions It’s such a rubbish slogan. Now they’ve removed ‘Stay at home’, all the Covidiots will be out in force because they’re supposedly allowed to 🤦‍♀️

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 10/05/2020 20:48

It’s a pointless piece of waffle, usual Johnson rubbish. Glad I live in Wales.

P999 · 10/05/2020 21:41

If they wanted a snappy one worded, what is wrong with 'stay distant' or 'keep distancing'? Sounds like they've just copied and pasting from their anti terror strategy

P999 · 10/05/2020 21:42

Sorry. Snappy 2- worder!

P999 · 10/05/2020 21:45

Keep safe, keep distancing. Andcake, why wouldnt they use something like that? Am no PR so i absolutely don't have a clue about 'landing messages' with impact. But Why would they reject something like that?

P999 · 10/05/2020 21:57

Maybe it means, stop sleeping all day you lazy, feckless, fuck-face, sponging furloughed bastards?

P999 · 10/05/2020 22:15

Before anyone misunderstands. That was a joke. About certain mindsets. Not my own.

CherryPavlova · 10/05/2020 22:20

Keep your eyes peeled for tiny red spiky spheres wearing dark glasses.

It means nothing. It is abdication of responsibility. It’s a government giving limp messages so that they aren’t held accfor either a second spike or economic consequences.

anxietrist · 10/05/2020 23:11

Hope this clarifies

What does STAY ALERT mean to you?
JigsawsAreCool · 11/05/2020 00:44

Drink 7 pints of coffee a day. STAY ALERT.

My relative has died of covid today. Shame the STAY ALERT message wasn't out a week ago then maybe their wouldn't have caught it from their carers and could have been ALERT to it coming for them.

Mimishimi · 11/05/2020 05:18

Perhaps the meaning can be found by putting the two slogans together

"We are all in this together .... stay alert"

Make of that what you will but I suggest the events of 70 -80 years ago are a pretty good indicator.

OkMaybeNot · 11/05/2020 05:20

It means 'interpret as you like, it's up to you, we want the economy back up and running before we lock down again in a month or two'

dangerrabbit · 11/05/2020 05:23

It means the government are not responsible for their shitty half-arsed policies, for having the highest number of deaths in Europe and second highest in the world. Instead, the fault lies with individual citizens for getting ill.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 11/05/2020 05:35

I am the only one who doesn't understand all the sneering around "Stay alert". It means stay alert when you socially distant, don't get too close to others - people are getting complacent and standing closer together I've noticed. That all it means. No need for "lol it means avoid the virus hahaha what an idiot Boris is" Hmm
