The new slogan - Stay Alert....

Alert to what? Is the virus going to break into our homes?
Listen out for someone coughing then run a mile from them.

What on earth does Stay alert actually mean?

At least Stay home made sense stay alert means nothing at all or AIBU?

Your country needs more Lerts - it's just what my Dad always says.

Buscake · 10/05/2020 10:42

Herd immunity
Eugenics
Kill the vulnerable

TwentyViginti · 10/05/2020 10:42

I was shocked to find out the speech this evening is pre recorded. We aren't even worth a live broadcast!

WatcherintheRye · 10/05/2020 10:42

I read that as staying vigilant with hygiene and distancing

'Stay vigilant' would have been much better, if you have to have a slogan. Just out of interest, have any other countries got slogans? If so, what are they?

my2bundles · 10/05/2020 10:43

To me it means continue as I am. Shop once a week and keep my kids safe at least 2m away from others. Unfortunately to others it means go out and party 😠

Stopmenow123 · 10/05/2020 10:43

Because 'stay home' backfired. For each 'rule breaker' there are more judging by MN who haven't left their house for weeks and don't plan to do so until 'it's safe' whatever that means.

This included people not going to hospital (and not taking their children) who needed treatment for non-COVID illnesses and in some cases, died. Because they were 'staying home and protecting the NHS'.

Which necessitated a public health campaign.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/05/2020 10:44

I read that as staying vigilant with hygiene and distancing.

They are trying to challenge complacency

  • The meaning is obvious....

Take the virus into account when making decisions. Be mindful of the potential dangers. Make your own judgements about risk, taking into account social distancing.*

Yes, it's obvious to these PP and everyone with an ounce of common sense who doesn't just want to be negative.
Unfortunately 'common sense' seems to be an oxymoron, so it probably won't be a very effective message.

"TwentyViginti Sun 10-May-20 10:42:25

That's what I understand so hence I didn't wait for the prerecorded message to be on the news and jumped right in with the trying to be 'alert' .... afterall got to be ready for the blighter it could come at me from any angle any time so be prepared I say

Perhaps not the perfect term for it, but surely everyone can work out what they had in mind? Should they have spent months consulting focus groups for the best way to get it across?

Maybelatte · 10/05/2020 10:46

Alert to other people I guess so you don’t get too close to them. Basically have to treat strangers like a death threat and steer clear at all times.

Ilets · 10/05/2020 10:47

Scan the horizon for giant viruses approaching, ready to bat them out of the way with your special anti-virus swatter (govt issued to 'keep u safe')

PuppyMonkey · 10/05/2020 10:48

I think it means “we’ve given up dealing with this, you’re all on your own now guys.”

3cats · 10/05/2020 10:49

It’s like Mad Eye Moody “constant vigilance!”

Pelleas · 10/05/2020 10:49

No more falling asleep at night. Nodding off on the sofa, daydreaming, wool-gathering, fantasising, absent-mindedness and even power-napping are all now to be outlawed.

LastTrainEast · 10/05/2020 10:50

"I was shocked to find out the speech this evening is pre recorded. We aren't even worth a live broadcast!"

lol You understand that when someone records something they still have to be there to record it?

If it's a long speech you do it that way so you can trim it down and correct any mistakes.

GrimmsFairytales · 10/05/2020 10:50

Just out of interest, have any other countries got slogans? If so, what are they?

I'm another one wondering this.

Why do we need a slogan? Especially one which seems to have materialized just for the sake of having a slogan.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 10/05/2020 10:50

This:

I think it means “we’ve given up dealing with this, you’re all on your own now guys.”

Yep, I really don't think they have a clue. Too many people ignored the very loose 'lock down'. It wasn't like Italky or Spain but a watered down version and having the recent weekend with lots of people really close together they have given up so water the messaged down and let everyone interpret it whatever way they want .... then ultimately it's not the government's fault if the second spike comes in a few weeks ...

Someone's going to make a fortune reprinting these.

What does STAY ALERT mean to you?
Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2020 10:52

If this does turn out to be the slogan to me it just means don’t become complacent. Take all the steps you can to minimise the risks of getting or passing on CV.
That’s pretty obvious without a slogan TBF.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 10/05/2020 10:53

Wow - how much for the badge - I love them

The government will order hundreds of them....

OP posts:
MadameMeursault · 10/05/2020 10:53

Dropping “Stay home” will mean that the stupid people think they no longer need to stay home. It’s dangerous to change it. It needs to be simple for the stupid to understand. The government are idiots.

romatheroamer · 10/05/2020 10:54

I've just read about Jenrick's interview. This cabinet really are getting to be a shambles.
Mind you, it's a difficult task saying that the guidance is exactly the same as it is at present while trying to pretend that it isn't because they think people want to hear about relaxing....tying himself in knots.

romatheroamer · 10/05/2020 10:55

tieing?!

jay55 · 10/05/2020 10:56

Bugger all. Absolutely bugger all.

Davespecifico · 10/05/2020 10:56

It means nothing to me. I want to do as much as I can to avoid the virus so I will stay home, as I have done, until I’m required to go into work again.
