The new slogan - Stay Alert....

Alert to what? Is the virus going to break into our homes?
Listen out for someone coughing then run a mile from them.

What on earth does Stay alert actually mean?

At least Stay home made sense stay alert means nothing at all or AIBU?

It means they want us to go back to work so they can't continue with the stay at home messaging.

Tellmetruth4 · 10/05/2020 14:49

I believe ‘Remain Cautious, Maintain Social Distancing’ or ‘Don’t become Complacent, Maintain Social Distancing’, would have had more more meaning but the government realise that much of the U.K. populace prefer very simple 2 syllable word sentences.

Tellmetruth4 · 10/05/2020 14:51

And yes as PP said they want people to go back to work. ‘Stay Home’ is incompatible with that.

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 14:51

Oh bloody hell my sandwich Angry

Incontinencesucks · 10/05/2020 15:14

Maybe it's like star trek: red alert, yellow alert...we can be at yellow alert and go back to work and socially distance now but be alert for changes to red alert if your postcode starts spiking sickness and the local hospitals struggle/schools have outbreaks then back to lockdown?

Hard to tell as it's open to interpretation a lot, depending on scenario. I'm sure they'll be a shit bomb of threads though as stay home caused them with posters asking if x, y, z was an ok reason to leave

Incontinencesucks · 10/05/2020 15:15

Another alternative: Don’t Stand So Close To Me

I would have got behind this before the pandemic! Especially to the ass riders in supermarket queues.

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 15:16

Was it red dwarf who had highest level alert = brown Grin

BelfryBat · 10/05/2020 15:24

The new slogan means the government is still pursuing the unpopular policy of herd immunity. It doesn't want to be blamed for further deaths, so it will blame the population for the next spike. The slogan means what individuals want it to mean and was written that way on purpose. The new meme even has 'green for go' edging to it, FFS.

Anyone who thinks the government is on the side of anyone but the very rich few needs to give their head a wobble.

What does STAY ALERT mean to you?
Mummyoflittledragon · 10/05/2020 15:26

It means...stay alert.
What like Brexit means Brexit?

I’m not sure people are struggling to understand it tbh.
I’m sure you’re not sure... rather like a lot of the population.

What does STAY ALERT mean to you?
Weallhavevalidopinions · 10/05/2020 15:32

I didn't stay alert and instead did some gardening and whilst I was away numerous replies arrived...

Now if I had followed the government's (obviously clear to some) message I would have sat here on high alert and waited patiently. Now I had to have a cup of tea and slowly catch up.

Thanks for the fun responses, made me smile. Shame about the usual sourpusses - some really put a damp sponge on anything

Genderwitched · 10/05/2020 15:34

It means...stay alert. I'm not sure why people are struggling to understand it to be honest.

I agree, the nanny state hasn't spelt it out in words of one syllable, cue mass panic WHAT SHALL WE DO!! It's pathetic.

why can't people just grow up and take some responsibility for themselves.

Oldbutstillgotit · 10/05/2020 15:37

In Scotland the message is still Stay at Home . I foresee a bit of confusion ...

Incontinencesucks · 10/05/2020 15:39

@BeetrootRocks sounds about right! 😂

duckme · 10/05/2020 15:44

It means that we all need to be extra vigilant during our daily exercise. They've discovered that coronavirus likes to hide underneath parked cars and jump out at people!

Mummyoflittledragon · 10/05/2020 15:45

Genderwitched
People are too scared to think for themselves right now. The government needs to be doing that for them. As they haven’t, it is leaving many amongst of us to speculate their motives.

The average person is nowhere near as bright as the average mumsnetter and in turn, there are many people less bright than the average person. They don’t have the education or access to information, discussion boards Etc. They need clarify. It isn’t about taking responsibility for yourself.

Taking responsibility for yourself got us into this mess in the first place. Ie most people rationalise it won’t happen to them until it reached thr point, when lockdown occurred.

Jengnr · 10/05/2020 15:49

It means when we die it’s our own fault for not being alert, not the Government’s for their piss poor excuse for managing this situation.

firstimemamma · 10/05/2020 15:50

It's wishy-washy bullshit that could mean many different things to many different people. Bloody government!

Mary1935 · 10/05/2020 15:51

It means they don’t know how to get out of lockdown. Stay Alert - I’m always alert - what am I alerting myself for!!!
You can’t see the virus!!
It’s really open to interpretation.
I will carry on doing what I’m doing as thankfully it’s not affecting me to much.
I will be interesting at 7pm won’t it.
Stay safe.

iklboo · 10/05/2020 15:52

Stay Alert - Britain Needs Lerts

Makinglists · 10/05/2020 15:58

It means go back to normal just watch out for people who look ill then run to the hills. People will view it as an end to lockdown. When life is stressful which it is for all of us now we need very clear, step by step, guidelines on what we should or should not do otherwise people will make it up as they go along.

Velvian · 10/05/2020 15:59

Why are there so many apologists for our shit show of a government on Mumsnet? Posters are falling over themselves to cast dissenters as hysterical thickos.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/05/2020 16:00

They don’t have the education or access to information, discussion boards

Don't be ridiculous. Anyone with an Internet connection can access Mumsnet, gov.uk, BBC news etc.

Yes I know some people can't due to cost, but 93% of households have Internet access and most of those who don't will be older people who aren't interested in being online. Most of them will have access to BBC news or will buy a newspaper.

www.statista.com/statistics/275999/household-internet-penetration-in-great-britain/

The information is freely available to anyone who wants to read it. if some people take their news from the tabloids, probably because they write off quality news and information as 'boring', they only have themselves to blame. It doesn't take a genius to work out that most of what the tabloids print is total crap.

fussychica · 10/05/2020 16:02

Reminds me of the silly childhood joke "Be alert because we need more lerts".

Alert to what? Its not like you can bloody see it. Ambiguous nonsense, just like pretty much everything they have done. Better to have left it as it was but of course we must have a catchphrase for each and every stage of the virus Angry. Pathetic.
