To have burst my mum’s bubble re: ribena?

Sapphire387 · 09/05/2020 19:00

Talking to my mum on the phone earlier and she was telling me how she was going to stock up on Ribena because she heard on the radio that Dominic Cummings had been really ill with coronavirus but his four year old son had been giving him spoonfuls of Ribena and he got better. She said she thinks ‘they’ need to start compiling reports of all the things that have helped people.

I said I am sure a healthy diet helps, and Ribena does contain vitamin C, but that I refused to believe that Ribena was a coronavirus cure, it seemed pretty far-fetched to me.

I wish I had more patience but honestly, she’s all about the conspiracy theories and such like, we are all under strain with lockdown and I just couldn’t listen to her.

She’s now in a bad mood with me.

Was I being unreasonable?

Yabu. Much easier to just nod and agree with some of the crazy theories. Drinking extra Ribena won’t hurt her.

Thisismytimetoshine · 09/05/2020 19:03

Is this a windup?

user200000000 · 09/05/2020 19:05

You should learn the art of 'yes mum' and changing the subject.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/05/2020 19:08

Correlation isn't causation. Just whisper that under your breath.

Boris and Cummings both recovered. Possibly being pure evil is protective. Oh no, Tom Hanks recovered, ignore me.

Sapphire387 · 09/05/2020 19:08

Not a windup.

And yeah I agree, I frequently practise the nod and agree technique and I wish I had but... yeah I think lockdown is getting to me!

Although I do love Ribena so if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em?

Probably helped staying hydrated.

LtJudyHopps · 09/05/2020 19:10

I feel you OP. My mum keeps reading crap on Facebook and spouting it to me. It’s not true that if you drink a hot drink every hour it washes the virus down and your stomach acid destroys it!! I’m trying to hmmm yeah along when on the phone as she’s shielding but I don’t have the patience for Facebook conspiracies!

Does it have to be ribena or will supermarket brand work too?

Waitrose, yes. Aldi, no.

The senior partner at work emailed this to all staff. I was gobsmacked. And despite his best efforts, he has apparently had the virus. I bet he's gutted!

YANBU

Which artificial sweetener works best?

gobbynorthernbird · 09/05/2020 19:28

What? Everybody knows that it's hot Vimto that cures everything.

attillathenun · 09/05/2020 19:29

YANBU - my mum keeps reposting fake news/quack cures on Facebook and it’s driving me mad! One was about gargling salt water and it “eradicating” the virus and when I told her it was rubbish she kept saying yes but it helps sore throats 🙄🤬 hardly the same thing as eradicating is it!

ShinyMe · 09/05/2020 19:30

My mum always gave me Ribena when I was poorly, and I always associate it with being poorly and it making me better.

It's bollocks, obvs, but a little part of me believes proper Ribena is magic.

Samtsirch · 09/05/2020 19:31

Just send her a crate of ribena as a peace offering 😁

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/05/2020 19:37

Ahh when I was a child (and all this was fields) we had Rosehip syrup and some sugary concoction called Delrosa
You were meant to dilute it but of course we necked it straight .

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 09/05/2020 19:38

How does she stand on Lucozade? (The proper stuff in a glass bottle wrapped in polythene) That cured me of everything.

Quartz2208 · 09/05/2020 19:39

Hot squash is a good way of keeping people hydrated and comfortable when ill (it contains sugar and salt to keep you hydrated) and often tastes better when ill (I cant abide water when ill its hot squah or lemonade for me)

this was a very small study:

www.nhs.uk/news/food-and-diet/hot-drinks-ease-cold-and-flu/

For me its not going to do any harm having it and it can make you feel better. It certainly isnt going to cure you though if you get really ill

handbagsatdawn33 · 09/05/2020 19:41

Surely everyone knows that homemade Chicken Soup cures all known illnesses?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/05/2020 19:43

You've missed a trick. You should have asked her to send you some too so you can binge on hot ribena!

handbagsatdawn33 · 09/05/2020 19:43

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow

The real stuff is wrapped in cellophane - not polythene

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/05/2020 19:44

(Or controversially, Ribena with milk!)

Sapphire387 · 09/05/2020 19:45

Ribena with milk?!

Baileys and hot milk though, I could do with one of those.
