To have burst my mum’s bubble re: ribena?

Sapphire387 · 09/05/2020 19:00

Talking to my mum on the phone earlier and she was telling me how she was going to stock up on Ribena because she heard on the radio that Dominic Cummings had been really ill with coronavirus but his four year old son had been giving him spoonfuls of Ribena and he got better. She said she thinks ‘they’ need to start compiling reports of all the things that have helped people.

I said I am sure a healthy diet helps, and Ribena does contain vitamin C, but that I refused to believe that Ribena was a coronavirus cure, it seemed pretty far-fetched to me.

I wish I had more patience but honestly, she’s all about the conspiracy theories and such like, we are all under strain with lockdown and I just couldn’t listen to her.

She’s now in a bad mood with me.

Was I being unreasonable?

My mother also swore by ginger - so ginger biscuits, ginger chocolates - all good. She lived until nearly 88 without much illness, so who could say she was wrong? Grin

The thing is though a lot if these ‘old wife’s takes’ turn out to have an element of truth.
Think of all of those Jewish mums making chicken soup, turns out it is good for colds, I think it is something to do with the bone marrow?
So you never know.

My ex husband said that because our children had acid reflux (one does not both but he forgot that) they would kill off the virus and be fine! I gave him short shrift and said I would not be denying our son his medication on the say so of an internet bot who had been disproved countless times I believe I pointed out to him stomach acid kills many things but introducing it to our lungs and bloodstream was generally inadvisable there was a lot more along the lines of your a tit he didnt speak to us for a week the concern for his children was "overwhelming"

My Granny told my dad that she was going to start eating a raw onion once a week as her friend had done so and lived to 81. My dad pointed out that she was 85 and lived on Victoria sponge cake and pies.

DollyDoneMore · 09/05/2020 20:40

Drinking extra Ribena won’t hurt her.

It might fuck her teeth.

julybaby32 · 09/05/2020 20:43

Maybe the mice felt they had more to live for once they had tasted Ribena?

mumwon · 09/05/2020 20:44

old fashioned rosehip syrup we use to get from Boots in the medicine shaped bottle

Sapphire387 · 09/05/2020 20:46

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/05/2020 20:49

"DELROSA . . . . . "

I remember that 70. I bloody loved that stuff used it neat to wash down the Haliborange tablets.

No wonder I have substance Dandelion and Burdock abuse problems.

mumwon · 09/05/2020 20:52

@DollyDoneMore dd had multiple allergies to food & was difficult to feed but she liked Ribena & drank it every day - I worry that replacing sugar with sweeteners is a mistake. from my observation/experience its more about a good diet & good tooth care & no sweets except for special treats

Majorcollywobble · 09/05/2020 20:54

At least it's your Mum giving you advice . We have had my DH previous wife giving well meaning advice to alternately squirt water up our noses and uses hairdryer on hot setting . That apparently kills the virus.

Samtsirch · 09/05/2020 20:54

My grandmother used to give me ribena milk!
Apparently ribena was given out by the government to pregnant women during the war, so she believed it had special powers 😁

mumwon · 09/05/2020 20:56

Dandelion & Burdock - mmm
Cream Soda....

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 09/05/2020 20:56

There was a study in NZ recently where schoolkids tested Ribena and found 0 Vitamin C.

It is good when you're ill to get some sugars and fluids into you, though.

ByzantinePrincess · 09/05/2020 20:58

Ooh I could do with a glass of Ribena right now, with some ice...

JellyfishandShells · 09/05/2020 21:00

How does she stand on Lucozade? (The proper stuff in a glass bottle wrapped in polythene) That cured me of everything

You knew you were officially ill when the Lucozade made an appearance . I actually hated it ( tasted of sweetened rust to me) but it was ‘medicinal’ so I bravely endured it. A serious cold of the ‘nose falling off’ variety was also treated by a wineglass with two squeezed oranges. Oranges were freely available to eat in the house but somehow squeezing them into a Paris goblet imbued them with curative powers.

thenightsky · 09/05/2020 21:02

Mmmm Delrosa! Me and my sister used to swig it neat out of the bottle when my mum went to hang the washing out. Grin

1Morewineplease · 09/05/2020 21:02

I suspect that it’s more to do with the fact that decades ago, warmed Ribena and rosehip syrup was considered to be a cure all for coughs and colds.

ALongHardWinter · 09/05/2020 21:03

StCharlotte I received an email about this from a very good friend of mine, right back at the start of lockdown. To say I was surprised is putting it mildly. I've known her for many years, and she has always been very scientifically minded, and cynical about miracle cures or preventative measures. I just couldn't believe that she'd fallen for this quackery!

mumwon · 09/05/2020 21:04

Does anybody remember Woolworths having cafes & serving hot blackcurrant in a glass with a metal holder as a child -it was the height of posh! (at least my ds's & I thought so)

user1471565182 · 09/05/2020 21:06

Hes having more than ribena, I heard.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 09/05/2020 21:10

If it was the only way he was saying hydrated, I dare say it helped. But not necessarily ribena.

When I had it the big thing seemed to be drinking lots and lots.

Lynda07 · 09/05/2020 21:15

I can remember having 'flu when I was away at school late 1960s and being given Ribena. It is jam packed with vitamin C.

Lynda07 · 09/05/2020 21:16

Of course it isn't a miracle cure but vitamin C does help.
