To have burst my mum’s bubble re: ribena?

Sapphire387 · 09/05/2020 19:00

Talking to my mum on the phone earlier and she was telling me how she was going to stock up on Ribena because she heard on the radio that Dominic Cummings had been really ill with coronavirus but his four year old son had been giving him spoonfuls of Ribena and he got better. She said she thinks ‘they’ need to start compiling reports of all the things that have helped people.

I said I am sure a healthy diet helps, and Ribena does contain vitamin C, but that I refused to believe that Ribena was a coronavirus cure, it seemed pretty far-fetched to me.

I wish I had more patience but honestly, she’s all about the conspiracy theories and such like, we are all under strain with lockdown and I just couldn’t listen to her.

She’s now in a bad mood with me.

Was I being unreasonable?

I'm team Vimto, personally

saraclara · 09/05/2020 21:29

Delrosa! You've taken me back more than five decades. That and gripe water were the cure-alls in my family.

Silvercatowner · 09/05/2020 21:35

I think it's vitamin D that is thought to have some protective effects against C19, isn't it? Not C?

Khione · 09/05/2020 21:37

You do have to be careful when 'Yes Mum'ing it.

My (adult) kids know to duck whenever they say it to me.

It could be to do with the sarcastic tone of voice they use. ...Gits Grin

Ellmau · 09/05/2020 21:40

At least it's not bleach.

dotty12345 · 09/05/2020 21:43

My (ex) mother in law (late 70's, asthma, type 1 diabetes) told me you could prevent the virus taking hold by taking a paracetamol a day as it would hold it at bay! Contacted my ex and he gave her a good talking to! She also appears to be good mates with Boris as she always tells me what he's going to do next (none of it has happened!) Drives me bloody nuts!

The real stuff is wrapped in cellophane - not polythene I know, I had a bit of word blindness.

RunSoICanEatCheese · 09/05/2020 22:01

My friend is of the firm belief that there is very little a hot Ribena cannot fix.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 09/05/2020 22:05

Delarosa.... dh still asks me when he is a bit poorly sick if I can get him some Rose hip syrup.

MusicianTom · 09/05/2020 22:17

My friend is of the firm belief that there is very little a hot Ribena cannot fix.

RunSo, I also subscribe to this belief, in a very tongue in cheek way. Hot ribena is very nice when you have a cold, I sometimes go posh and buy the organic blackcurrant squash (Rocks, is it?).

If ribena doesn't cure it, I have to resort to hot toddy made with fresh lemon juice, steeped lemon rind and sliced fresh ginger, honey and a generous slug of whisky.

TheRoyallingStones · 09/05/2020 22:18

My Irish stepmum swears by flat Sprite to cure any and all illness, and I’ve seen several memes suggesting this is a well known irishmammy remedy

I used to love Ribena, does anyone remember when they did Shrek green ribena? I LOVED that!

Of course none of the home remedies will cure coronavirus. Some may help with the symptoms (like if ribena instead of water means you drink more so stay hydrated). None are likely to do anyone any harm, apart from the suggestion of drinking/injecting bleach 🤦‍♀️

stardance · 09/05/2020 22:19

Goodness it's like the thing that went around about holding your breath... if you can hold your breath for more than 10 seconds you do not have the virus. I wondered why they're spending money on testing if they can just ask people to try holding their breath!!

The magic drink is lucozade in this house. I'm now in my 30s but my Mum still offers to bring me lucozade if I'm not well. It's comforting.

Moondust001 · 09/05/2020 22:28

My grandmother swore that whisky cured everything. Although she did always add that if you drank enough of it you wouldn't care whether it cured you or not.

Kastanien · 09/05/2020 22:31

I think it has to be Rocks Organic Blackcurrant , if it isn't about 300% more expensive than any of the other drinks then it is just not going to cut it I am afraid.

goose1964 · 09/05/2020 22:39

You're all wrong, it's heinz cream of tomato and ritz crackers.

AdaColeman · 09/05/2020 22:43

As a child, you knew that you were really ill when the Lucozade was brought out. My Mum used to serve it in a special little wine glass, you knew you were probably at death’s door. But then when egg-in-a-cup made an appearance, there was hope that you might live after all.

Rosehip syrup is wonderful stuff, I have it spooned over vanilla ice cream, or drizzled over strawberries & cream.

Thisismytimetoshine · 09/05/2020 22:45

Wasn't it only available in chemists?

justasking111 · 09/05/2020 22:46

Rocks black currant here too. You can get rose hip syrup as well, not del rosa but I used to buy Atkins and Potts from Lakeland for DCs in the winter some in Amazon, stocks are low though.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/05/2020 22:48

I have been drinking a lot of Ribena recently (usually have a bottle might last a year or two have gone through two bottles in last 6ish weeks)

And I have not caught covid yet - some of my colleagues have (and those we work with)

Mmm maybe your mum is onto something. Tell her to keep it quiet she and I could benefit financially

Soconfusedandlost · 09/05/2020 22:48

You lucky buggers getting ribena when you were ill. It was flat lemonade in our house or lucozade. Both of which I hated

LellyMcKelly · 09/05/2020 22:48

I don’t like Ribena. Can I have orange and pineapple instead?

Twofurrycatsagain · 09/05/2020 22:52

I don't like vimto or ribena. The cure all in this house is either: whiskey all in (colds etc) benny and hot (stomach) or witch hazel (apply not drink!).

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2020 22:56

DM gave us a (diluted) mix of Boots rosehip syrup and PLJ - a genius mix of too-sweet and too-sharp sources of vitamin C in the times when orange juice was a luxury and (except for the Xmas tangerine) oranges were a bugger to peel or squeeze.

DogInATent · 09/05/2020 23:12

Surely it only works when it's hot rum-and-ribena?

(works even better when you switch the ribena with homemade elderberry cordial - wrong time of year for that, but give it a couple of weeks and I'll experiment with elderflower gin...)
