To have burst my mum’s bubble re: ribena?

Sapphire387 · 09/05/2020 19:00

Talking to my mum on the phone earlier and she was telling me how she was going to stock up on Ribena because she heard on the radio that Dominic Cummings had been really ill with coronavirus but his four year old son had been giving him spoonfuls of Ribena and he got better. She said she thinks ‘they’ need to start compiling reports of all the things that have helped people.

I said I am sure a healthy diet helps, and Ribena does contain vitamin C, but that I refused to believe that Ribena was a coronavirus cure, it seemed pretty far-fetched to me.

I wish I had more patience but honestly, she’s all about the conspiracy theories and such like, we are all under strain with lockdown and I just couldn’t listen to her.

She’s now in a bad mood with me.

Was I being unreasonable?

Did she mistake Ribena for black elderberry? There was some stuff kicking about the internet in the early days of Covid. But I think it was proven to be rubbish? www.menshealth.com/nutrition/a32056858/elderberry-extract-supplement-coronavirus-covid-19/

Surely it’s flat lemonade that you need?.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2020 19:50

I think the point of the Ribena was mostly that it gave their 4 year old something 'useful' to do. Grin

Ms Wakefield said their son, Ceddy, had “administered” Ribena to Mr Cummings with the “grim insistence of a Broadmoor nurse” as he lay sick.
“This might be my only really useful advice for other double-Covid parents or single mothers with pre-schoolers,” she wrote. “Get out the doctor’s kit and make it your child’s job to take your temperature. Any game that involves lying down is a good game.”

I never really managed to do 'Yes mum' while my mum was well. To my mind, that would have been treating her like a child and, in a way, disrespectful - like I had given up on her ever being intelligent enough to understand sense. I really wanted her to use the brains she had, because she did have them - she just defaulted to 'Some man said' far too frequently. I lived in hope of us meeting on rational equal terms.

When she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I yes mum'd absolutely everything she said. There was no pointing in continuing to challenge her at that point.

The upshot of this long-winded spiel is that I understand why you didn't just 'Yes mum' her, but that she will probably (regrettably) never thank you for it. Doesn't mean you're wrong to challenge though Flowers

This sounds exactly like my mum and the sort of thing either of my parents say.
I get your thinking completely .
my dad said last week he wouldn't give me their plumber number for a friend due to GDPR!
constant battle!

HazelBite · 09/05/2020 20:00

The leader of Belarus reckons Vodka prevents it (they've only had 21deaths)

julybaby32 · 09/05/2020 20:05

Correlation doesn't equal causation.
Ribena is especially useful for disguising the taste of medicine for gerbils though, and induces them to drink more than they usually do. You can also easily check that the gerbils have drunk from the water bottle recently by looking to see who is sporting a pink streak down her chin and chest. Perhaps young Master Cummings is used to taking medicine disguised in this way and believes that Ribena makes you feel better? Perhaps they have to disguise paracetamol to make Mr Cummings take it?

RideaCockHorseOfCourse · 09/05/2020 20:05

I remember my dear mum giving me warm Ribena as a child when I was poorly in bed. It made me puke violently Hmm

MrsPotatoHeadsSheeWee · 09/05/2020 20:05

Dominic Cummings has kids? Terrifying.

Auridon4life · 09/05/2020 20:07

Apparently alcohol kills the virus. I have been rigourously testing this theory!

dementedma · 09/05/2020 20:10

Hot Ribena was the treat above all treats when we were young. It was worth being ill for.

Clavinova · 09/05/2020 20:20

"A study in mice found that consumption of blackcurrant extract reduced virus accumulation and as a result mortality was greatly improved." !!

She’s wrong, it’s gin! I’m having loads every day, so am fully protected against CV.

opticaldelusion · 09/05/2020 20:25

I'd have shot her, frankly.

How would you pronounce Ceddy, and tell me it isn't short for Cedric.

70isaLimitNotaTarget, I remember Delrosa too - we never diluted it. It's possible Dad never read the instructions Smile.

Peregrina · 09/05/2020 20:28

Lucozade was the cure all in our household too.

You have to admit that either Ribena or Lucozade is better than taking Trump's advice and swigging Dettol.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/05/2020 20:29

I believe it's high in vitamin C which is good for you when fighting a virus. Of course it's not going to cure covid19 but as a supplement there's nothing wrong with it apart from the fact that you can't get any form of Ribena with hideous artificial sweeteners in it now .

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 09/05/2020 20:29

Delrosa! I had forgotten about that!

mathanxiety · 09/05/2020 20:29

Well that was quite the X-post...

Spaceprincess · 09/05/2020 20:30

I had it and recovered, but am more chaotic good than evil. I'd also like to think that original cellophane sporty glass Ribena would be more potent.

loubieloo4 · 09/05/2020 20:30

@HazelBite don't forget the saunas!

I have read some very interesting studies on vitamin D if you want to give your mum something to think about

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/05/2020 20:31

Reported saylarvae, if anyone else wants to do the same. Can we not have a conversation on the internet without being spammed by freaks???

mathanxiety · 09/05/2020 20:31

@saylarvae

"Yes mum..."

MashedPotatoBrainz · 09/05/2020 20:33

YANBU every one knows that Vimto is the go to cure all. At least according to my batshit mother.
