To think the Queen is pretty fucking cool

Just that really.
We’re going to struggle when she goes

fiveeyes yes she could have abdicated but then she saw how her father died prematurely due to an abdication and her sense of duty to her country which was instilled in her from a very early age as a major Royal is very strong. Though goodness knows why she would want to do it for such an ungrateful and thoughtless minority is beyond me!

cardibach · 09/05/2020 14:20

@DaisylovesDonald to not like her I’d have to have any interest I; her at all. I don’t.
But your comment was pretty ridiculous and over dramatic, wasn’t it. Yes. Sentimental people will be sentimental when she dies. It’ll have no effect I. Whether anyone ‘makes it through’ a pandemic, still less whether the country as whole does. It’s that kind of over dramatisation which caused the Diana effect in the first place.

derxa · 09/05/2020 14:26

who misses Diana now? Unsurprisingly...me Grin She was infuriating but I remember where I was when I heard of her death.

Pelleas · 09/05/2020 14:29

I remember where I was when I heard of Diana's death, although it wasn't until my then-partner got back from work at 5pm, because I hadn't had the radio or TV on. I am not saying no one ever misses her, but the vast majority were no longer conscious of a loss in their lives once all the hysteria had died down.

cardibach · 09/05/2020 14:32

I remember where I was too. Doesn’t mean I miss her. I was trying to get children’s tv for toddler DD and I couldn’t because BBC had gone wall to wall royal announcement. I remember the inconvenience. Why would I miss a woman I’d never met?

Pelleas · 09/05/2020 14:33

... I remember my boyfriend said "Di's dead!" and I asked "Did she commit suicide?" because that was the first thought I had (she'd been getting an absolute roasting from the press about her fling with Dodi, because they were just as racist then as they are now).

Greengrassgravy · 09/05/2020 14:42

@Sostenueto Though goodness knows why she would want to do it for such an ungrateful and thoughtless minority is beyond me! Who are you referring to as the minority? I'm assuming you think it's the people who don't support her? It's a bit weird calling someone ungrateful and thoughtless at her doing something they don't want her to do - they didn't get to choose her? Remind me what's the point of her?

Pelleas · 09/05/2020 14:46

If the Queen thinks people are ungrateful that she's deigned to live a pampered life at their expense for the last 90 odd years - she's welcome to stop! Smile

huntinthehornybacktoad · 09/05/2020 16:43

" For those of you on here saying she doesn't write her own speeches, she writes all her Christmas speeches and any personal speeches that she gives to the nation. So yes she would have written the speech she gave tonight."

that's interesting. Her speeches certainly don't sound like politician speeches. Their genius is in their extreme simplicity. That takes the self-control and extreme sense of duty spoken about above I supose - because otherwise there would be inconsistencies creeping in through the years.

"And what do you do?" is a cracking book title :)

"From the minute the Queen put on her crown in 1953 aged 27 yrs old her life has not been her own. Yes, she leads a luxurious life in the full face if public scrutiny. I don't think people realise just what she gave up when that crown was placed upon her head. She gave up the one thing we all have and take for granted but she does not have. Freedom to do and say exactly what you want"

I do agree with this but I also agree with the posters pointing to examples of ordinary women who have lived and died this way - just doing their duty and not expecting much freedom.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 16:52

All the things the queen does are unnecessary. She’s just a very very expensive figure head.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 16:53

And what do you do?" is a cracking book title

Yes it is, and very apt too.

SheWranglesRugRats · 09/05/2020 18:10

I’d like to see some non-sycophantic source proof that she writes her own speeches, because I don’t believe it.

iklboo · 09/05/2020 18:22

Ungrateful? What has she done that I should personally be grateful for? She wouldn't know me if I stood up in her soup and farted the National anthem.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 18:47

Yeah surely it’s the queen that should be grateful to us, the taxpayer. Hilarious the idea we should be grateful to her.

Alsohuman · 09/05/2020 18:53

Accordingly to Wikipedia, the Queen writes her own Christmas messages.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 19:10

Ahh must be right then.

CHIRIBAYA · 09/05/2020 19:54

I'll be just fine when shes goes.

SheWranglesRugRats · 09/05/2020 20:11

According to Wikipedia the Christmas features largely written by the queen sometimes with assistance from Philip and her staff. I’d rather suspect that “largely” and “assistants” are doing some heavy lifting there. But will never know will we because there’s no proper scrutiny.

SheWranglesRugRats · 09/05/2020 20:12

Speech is, not features.

mrsjg · 09/05/2020 20:23

What @CHIRIBAYA said.

huntinthehornybacktoad · 09/05/2020 21:34

so 61% said YANBU but most of the comments are to the contrary

my first poll where I've really noticed that!

That would be because anti monarchists never miss an opportunity to offer up their vitriol.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 23:47

Yeah how vitriolic of us to see the injustice of a hereditary taxpayer funded monarchy, with their unearned wealth, palaces and privilege. Thank God we aren’t all besotted with them, but see them for what they really are.
