Just that really.
We’re going to struggle when she goes

Why would we revert to communism if we became a republic? It would become a democratic country with a fair system in place where we get to vote in a president, with the added bonus of not being saddled with a bloated extended family with all the costs of security. Ireland works very well, and is a hell of a lot cheaper. The money saved could be spent on something worthwhile If we just become a republic why would the Crown lose their property? The Crown Estates are not publicly owned, they are the property of the Crown so if you want to confiscate them I assume you are happy to have your family property confiscated as well, or are you a special case?

It is just the politics of envy. If we don't want a King or Queen fair enough I'm not bothered, if you want to start confiscating property that is different. If you want to pretend that we are somehow entitled to the profits of the Crown Estates then carry on.

paintedsmile77 · 09/05/2020 08:59

The crown estates don't belong to the royal family, they are the property of the crown, which is different. They would all revert back to the UK once the royals go.

dontdisturbmenow · 09/05/2020 09:01

I think she's ok but a bit dull as devoted of much emotions. I find her quite boring really but not a bad queen.

Isawamagpie · 09/05/2020 09:08

Absolutely love her, she is so dignified and classy, I'm so proud she represents the British public.

I dont know what will happen on her passing, the rest or the royal family are just not up to her standards.

I'm on the fence re: Will & Kate, I find them dull but none threatening.
Used to like Harry but can't stand him since all this Megan stuff, leaving the RF for a life away from media - then straight away throwing himself and his wife into a different type of media?!

I love the queens mantra of "never complain, never explain" and think certain members of the RF should take it on board!

FiveEyes · 09/05/2020 09:11

@Sostenueto She still has the freedom at any time to abdicate or retire. She chose not to, but she always had a choice.

Pelleas · 09/05/2020 09:13

Actually, I don't think anyone should be allowed to own empty properties in a country where there are homeless people. If people want to invest in property, then fine, but they should be legally obliged to rent their extra houses out (at a fair market rate) rather than letting them stand empty.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 09:16

Imagine applying bedroom tax on her properties, just like they do with other benefit recipients. The queen escapes all austerity measures though.

Pixiefringe · 09/05/2020 09:17

God bless the Queen, she is brilliant

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 09:19

The queen has nothing to complain about, but, never explain? how convenient and fortunate that she never has to. Not a word about Andrew, in fact she went out of her way to show her support.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 09:22

Is the queen more worthy of being “blessed by God” than anyone else? We’re all equal in Gods eyes fortunately.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 09/05/2020 09:25

In the absence of royals, we would seamlessly revert to being the Commonwealth of Great Britain once more. The head of state would be the Lord Speaker. The tourists would still come as they do in France.

Pelleas · 09/05/2020 09:31

We did it in 1649 and the country didn't collapse (though I'm not saying the Queen should be beheaded, just deposed!). The Protectorate only collapsed because stupidly, a hereditary principle was applied when O. Cromwell died, and his son Richard was useless. If they'd elected another Lord Protector, which would have been more in the spirit of not having a monarchy, we might have avoided the Restoration.

Alsohuman · 09/05/2020 09:34

The government allow other people to lose their homes quite easily

Does it?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 09/05/2020 09:40

But for Tumbledown Dick.... (sigh)

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 09:41

Yes it does Alsohuman

Alsohuman · 09/05/2020 09:46

Perhaps you could explain how then.

IDontLikeZombies · 09/05/2020 09:47

My wee granny was pretty much the same, stoic, dignified, clever.
The big difference was my granny was born into relative poverty, she buried 3 of her 4 children and worked a menial job plus farm labour when she got home well into her old age. At one point in the 1930s she slept in a shed.
So yes, the queen is pretty cool but there are millions of normal women doing their 'duty' who are way cooler.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 09/05/2020 09:52

She's been around a long time, and as a constitutional placeholder she's done a good job. The money? She has less than Branson, the properties come with the job. Her kids are disappointing and her husband is a daft old bugger. She'll do.

Brefugee · 09/05/2020 10:00

it's when i read guff like this, that i know the country is doomed to have a monarchy forever

From the minute the Queen put on her crown in 1953 aged 27 yrs old her life has not been her own. Yes, she leads a luxurious life in the full face if public scrutiny ... I think she has been a great inspiration to those that understand the real sacrifices she has made to be our Queen. God save the Queen!

No. There has been very little sacrifice on her or any other of that family's part. Yes, some of them died in wars, boo hoo - so did millions of other people. And they didn't have squillions of quid back up and fell into poverty etc etc.

It's time for them all to go. I have no problem for those over retirement age to take a pension immediately and keep one or two assets up to a highest amount. For those between 50 and retirement to have some kind of financial help until retirement up to a highest amount. For those up to 40 help to find a job. And that's it. All palaces & castles and so on and so forth to go to the country to be turned into museums or something useful.

And on a personal and probably unreasonable note: her strangulated vowels get on my nerves.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 10:01

Perhaps you could explain how then.

You need it explaining how people lose their homes.? How about when they have to leave the home they’ve lived in all their lives because of bedroom tax, inheritance tax, Universal Credit.....all government enforced policies. None of them apply to the queen.

bluemoon77 · 09/05/2020 10:03

I defy any royalist to read this book and still think the royal family are a good thing. Absolutely beyond shocking.

To think the Queen is pretty fucking cool
Alsohuman · 09/05/2020 10:09

That makes zero sense. You’re defending the relatively rich who have to pay inheritance tax because they have an unearned windfall of more than £325k and then condemning the monarchy on exactly the same grounds. Anti monarchism really is a logic free zone.

derxa · 09/05/2020 10:09

Set up a new charity or QANGO to do it? Put the matter in the hands of local councils? Ha ha ha ha!

There we are, open your eyes folks. We’ve all got a bit of extra time for a good old read. Grin

Pelleas · 09/05/2020 10:10

She has less than Branson

Branson made his own. If the Queen had gained her wealth by setting up a small mail order record company in the 1970s and from that, built up a business empire, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
