To think that unlike Adele, lots of us are getting bigger after lockdown?

Having been reading about Adele's amazing weight loss, I feel as though I've performed a similar feat in reverse! I'm normally slim and healthy, I haven't been overeating that much during lockdown, so assume that it's just that I'm less active. I weighed myself this morning and have put on over half a stone! Speaking to friends, quite a few seem to have the same issue. AIBU to think that lots of people are gaining weight during lockdown? Or am I in denial and others are getting healthier, like Adele?

I think I've become fitter during lock , it's been easier to follow daily fitness schedules at home,

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 09:26

Arggh to the one hour thing. It’s madness. Just shows how easily ‘controlled’ people are.
I took my 3 DC for a walk to see some piglets that have just been born in the next village along yesterday. It took us 2.5 hours. We didn’t come within 5 metres of anyone else (maybe even 10). I have an ordnance survey map and I use it.

Anyway to answer the question, I have lost 4lbs. I actually have time to exercise now! I walk at least 2 hours with the DC every day (gasp) and also do online classes and use my exercise bike.

DH and I have both lost weight during lockdown. DH due to cutting down on beer and crisps. I was already losing weight ( reduced calories and attempting to change eating habits) but then injured my back so total inactivity for last 4 weeks, medication and DHs cooking meant my appetite disappeared. I put on some jeans this week and having been a neat fit they are now hanging off me.
We don’t snack because DS15 demolishes any snack food before we can get near it.

notalwaysalondoner · 07/05/2020 09:27

I’ve basically replaced my commute with exercise during lockdown and I’m loving it! I already ran 3x per week for 35-55 minutes, but now all the other days I’m doing at least 40 minutes yoga/HIIT except one weekend day when I’ll just do a long walk.

However we are doing a cooking rota with 6 adults in the house so we’re all eating super well as it’s getting a bit competitive! Plus the walking you’d normally do from the tube to the office and out for lunch etc doesn’t happen so overall it’s probably evened out. Don’t think I’ve lost or gained weight.

Camomila · 07/05/2020 09:27

I was planning to lose half a stone of baby weight this spring, ready for our planned summer holiday to Italy ( Sad )

I lost a couple of lbs in late March when I had (possibly) coronavirus, apart from that I've stayed the same. I do a lot of lockdown baking with DS1 but its balanced out by taking him out for his daily exercise usually with chubby baby DS2 in the sling.

Needmoresleep · 07/05/2020 09:30

Driving....perhaps. I cannot walk five minutes without passing someone on a crowded pavement. Probably more than one.

One hours exercise was given as a reason for going out. Were you thinking that Boris should have said, one hour for most people because the rate of contagion really needed to be reduced to prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed, but a special rule for Driving in case her DC wanted to see some piglets.

Thedogshow · 07/05/2020 09:32

I asked this question at the beginning because 10 days into lockdown I’d gained 2/3lb already from endless snacking and chocolate to cheer myself up. But because of that I panicked and have been really disciplined since then, eaten lots of salads, exercised lots & lost the weight I gained.
It seems that lots of the people who lost weight at the start due to feeling stressed then started to gain it after the first week or two. Maybe different psychological approaches to change/to stress.

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 09:33

Needmoresleep ‘one hour’ was an off the cuff remark made by Gove. It was never in any official guidance. He was asked a question, he gave his opinion. If you want to take that as law then great, crack on.

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 09:33

Oh and they weren’t fussed about seeing the piglets, I wanted to see them.

ANoiseAnnoys · 07/05/2020 09:35

you really don’t understand the concept of complying with the spirit of the law do you

What a load of guff. It makes absolutely no difference to anyone at all, especially in the quiet area I live, whether I run for one hour or three. NONE at all.

If you are unable to risk assess and use your fucking common sense Aardvark that’s up to you, but do not lecture me and others like me who are able to.

And @Zaphodsotherhead over two hours is still too long, in my opinion
luckily, Aardvark your opinion is just that.

Just stay safe in your box wearing your hair shirt until they find a vaccine....good luck with that.

TatianaBis · 07/05/2020 09:37

No I’ve lost half a stone. I think it’s the cleaning and the stress.

Puds11 · 07/05/2020 09:38

@monkeytennis97 what exercise are you doing? Not sure I’d have the stamina for 3-4 hrs a day! But would deffo like to loose 22lbs Grin

ThanksItHasPockets · 07/05/2020 09:40

Adele has to have had a gastric band as really big people do not see the light overnight and suddenly start losing it all ( I know it's not in lockdown) . A friend of mine was exactly the same as this - lost this amount in similar time . I just wish people would be honest.

I do not see your logic. Adele has been out of the public eye since 2017 (and if you look at the pictures from the 2017 Grammys or her concerts in summer 2017 you can see that she is already slimmer there then she was at her biggest). It is pretty plausible that she has used some of her estimated £150 million wealth to hire personal dietitians, chefs and trainers to lose weight at a reasonable rate over three years.

JemimaShore · 07/05/2020 09:41

Do people seriously think she looked better before, and is 'scrawny' now? I think she looks fantastic - slim and healthy. From what's been reported, though, it is an extreme diet (Sirtfood diet reportedly - although I wouldn't blame her if she had a gastric band).

I've piled on weight during lockdown, tucking into comfort food, boredom eating, much less exercise than usual. Started being very careful about what I eat this week, after all the reports of obesity and Covid.

Astrabees · 07/05/2020 09:41

I have been busier and more stressed out than ever in my job in social care. My hair is awful, I've put on a stone and most of me, especially my hands, seems to have aged almost overnight. Those of us who have had to go out to work during the lockdown and work in health or social care will not be emerging from it like swans or butterflies.

Bertucci · 07/05/2020 09:42

Sure enough, when a celebrity loses weight, someone on here says they are now ‘scrawny’. 🙄

She looks fantastic. Really healthy and pretty.

CoronaIsShit · 07/05/2020 09:42

I was in a great routine of 3 hours gym/swim/sauna 6 days a week before lockdown. Averaging over a 1000 calories burnt just through exercise. I had also massively cleaned up my very bad diet but wasn’t restricting food, motivated by how good I felt with the exercise, and had lost 4 stone with 3 more to go which looked very doable.

I put 6lb back on in the first two weeks after the gyms closed! Lost it now as I started power walking 6 days a week building up from 5km to 10km and a 30/40 minute bike ride with youngest DC but that took the whole of the last 5 weeks. Just shows how effective the cross trainer and weight lifting has been in the gym and the psychological effects it had on me with regards to my eating habits. I had worked up to using really heavy weights and can’t replicate my routine at home. Walking and cycling is not the same!

Sparklingplasters · 07/05/2020 09:44

My DH has lost half a stone, I have done loads of exercise but not lost weight. I’ve drank more alcohol and am more stressed by trying to do a stressful job from home and home schooling

OneandTwenty · 07/05/2020 09:44

but I've been calorie counting and doing about 3-4 hours exercise a day.

I am so jealous I can't even tell you! Good for you, genuinely glad some of us are having a good time. keep it up!

PhilSwagielka · 07/05/2020 09:45

I thought I'd get fat but surprisingly I haven't. I do have a bit of a belly, but my period is due and I always pork out a bit before shark week. I've been walking every day, with a couple of exceptions, and using my crosstrainer so hopefully that's helped.

Needmoresleep · 07/05/2020 09:45

A noise, I think you should at least be grateful that OTHER people have adhered to lockdown advice, and help bring the rate of contagion down.

I am finding the lack of concern for those who are ill or lost loved ones, quite bewildering. We are in this together.

And no, for most people, there is not the space not to see people. And it is only very very recently that scientists have Come to believe that transmission outdoors is lower than had been feared.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 07/05/2020 09:45

*'one hour’ was an off the cuff remark made by Gove. It was never in any official guidance. He was asked a question, he gave his opinion. If you want to take that as law then great, crack on.

Precisely. It's not that some people are ignoring the rule - there was never a one hour rule in the first place. Just because you imagine there is, doesn't make it so.

I comply with the law in full, but I'm not going to comply with 'rules' invented by randomers because I have enough of a brain to check the legislation and guidance for myself.

JemimaShore · 07/05/2020 09:45

3 hours gym/swim/sauna 6 days a week before lockdown.

That would have sounded like a chore before lockdown - now it sounds like a treat Grin

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 07/05/2020 09:46

I am finding the lack of concern for those who are ill or lost loved ones, quite bewildering.

What lack of concern? You really are just inventing things.

PhilSwagielka · 07/05/2020 09:46

@ANoiseAnnoys If you run in a quiet area or a park, as opposed to a busy urban area, I don't see the problem. I have friends who are runners and they try and stick to more remote areas.
